"Can't believe so many people are stressing about where their baby names are on the list!"

We care because we'd rather our children have a less popular than very popular name. I, for example, hated being one of 3 in my class and would prefer my childrens' names being less common. The whole point of naming someone/something is to identify it as uniquely as possible imo.

bigbluebump · 04/11/2010 10:28

Only 14 boys named ds's name last year Smile. Great list, thanks for the link!

takethatlady · 04/11/2010 12:00

Not sure whether to Grin or Sad but looking for classic but not-too-pop boys' names so nosily went to see what boys' names were only used 14 times last year bigbluebump.

14 boys were called 'Baby' Shock

Can that be right?!!!

Hope yours wasn't one of them!

bigbluebump · 04/11/2010 12:10

No, we don't have a 'Baby' Smile.

I wonder if 'Baby' might have been given to either babies that were not registered in time or sadly in some instances may not have made it?

takethatlady · 04/11/2010 12:12

Oh goodness that is awful. You're right, it's probably something like that. It seems so sad that one of the only official ways that little life is registered is in such an impersonal way.

TheLastMelon · 04/11/2010 16:43

Its interesting that our grandparents names are now back in fashion (eg Frederick, Stanley, Ruby, florence). I read somewhere that when our children are our age their grandparents names will be in fashion again, such as Trevor, Pauline, Tracey.
Will be interesting to see :)

ilovesprouts · 04/11/2010 16:51

my dds is in the top 5 and shes 18 years old !!

TheLastMelon · 04/11/2010 17:07

There were 9 baby boys called Ebenezer! (Just makes me think of Scrooge)

And 20 baby boys were called Humphrey!
Oh and 20 boys called Danish, which is nice but makes me think of pastries :)

poppydaisy · 04/11/2010 17:35

Danish - I wonder where that originates from...?

Humphrey and Ebenezer are quite cool, I think.

gallicgirl · 04/11/2010 18:22

The name we're most likely to use isn't on the list at all which surprises me but the more common spelling of it is in the top 100 though.

Our second choice/middle name has only 20 babies with that name.

I think it's interesting that the majority of babies have the most popular 30 or so names and you soon drop to relatively uncommon names.

InGodWeTrust · 06/11/2010 19:24

My Elijah's "D" is David...!! Stop copying me, I thought I was being bastarding original!

LilRedWG · 06/11/2010 19:40

DD is in the 50s and has dropped down two places.

tummytickler · 06/11/2010 20:10

But mine is 8 years old . . . . stop copying me Grin

hocuspontas · 06/11/2010 20:33

I know they can't really double-up on names but names like Lily/Lilly Holly/Hollie and Lexi/Lexie are so obviously the same name that I don't think the table reflects the true popularity of them.

InGodWeTrust · 09/11/2010 20:15

ah ha ha ha

Stardown · 09/11/2010 23:30

Our 29-week-old bump has 3 possible names. 1 is hovering around the 150-mark, and the other 2 are only 4 places apart in the lower 300's - weird!

Stardown · 09/11/2010 23:35

Oh cripes, oh cripes - HELP

Just looked at the other stats, one of our fave possible names for DS while still being around the 300-mark has jumped 50 places since last year Shock

Does that signify a big trend and will it keep growing? I don't want him to be one of a trillion in the next 5-10 years!

saffy85 · 11/11/2010 06:26

My DD shares her name with thousands of others. Oh dear my world is ending now what do I do? Hmm

Thissideofchannel · 11/11/2010 10:45

saffy85, it may not bother you but it does bother a lot of other people. I hated having to share my name with 3 others in my year and was always known as little XX or XX initial. No, my world didn't end, but I wish my parents had tried a bit harder to find a more original name.

TCOB · 11/11/2010 11:00

Having been one of FOUR girls with the same name in my year at school, I am pleased to see the last time my daughter's name was in the top 100 was in 1974!! Seriously though - my son's name is a constant presence in the top 10 but what the hell- I LOVE it.

rachel234 · 11/11/2010 11:06

The lists are grea. I'm amazed at how many different names were given last year (over 7,000 girls names last year alone!), and yet so many of us choose the same few ones....

rachel234 · 11/11/2010 11:06

sorry, great

Pinkjenny · 11/11/2010 11:16

I can't open it in work, can someone have a look and tell me how many babies were called Lucas and how many were called Alexa?

Not that these are my ds's names of anything Grin

Pinkjenny · 11/11/2010 11:16

Or even my dc. I did not call a boy Alexa.

saffy85 · 12/11/2010 20:43

Meh. Not worth getting your knickers in a twist about. Even if you name your DC something really original all that might change in a few short years and there could be loads.
