We have an appointment to register our daughters birth at 3pm.
Still can't decide on a name.

Trouble is, you just can't MAKE yourself like a name if you don't.

So far have:
Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth
but I don't LOVE any of them.

There are plenty of other names I like, but DH doesn't.

Daughter is just over 3wks old and DH and I just can't seem to agree on anything.

I sat crying about it last night as I know I'll just give in and agree to something I don't really like which makes me so sad.

and yes, I could put the appointment off, but I don't think having more time would make us any more likely to agree on something.

what about Elizabeth grace?

dustycups · 20/07/2010 13:15

or olivia grace??

moaningminniewhingesagain · 20/07/2010 13:15

Ah, you've got 6 weeks altogether. I would cancel the appt and go when you have decided.

How many syllables in the surname?

StealthPolarBear · 20/07/2010 13:16

Alice?

StealthPolarBear · 20/07/2010 13:16

What do you love? What kinds of things do you love? DH?

misdee · 20/07/2010 13:16

dd4 is Sophie Emily

Igglybuff · 20/07/2010 13:17

You should cancel. And set yourself a deadline to pick a name.

My DH and I picked a name by writing a shortlist separately and there was only one name that matched. We had tried talking about it, but it became frustrating as we each just made funny faces at the other's suggestions!!

BeattieBow · 20/07/2010 13:19

Go for Phoebe. We did this - a completely last minute name and now we love it.
Otherwise I would cancel the appointment for a couple of weeks. But also ime (I compromised on names each time) you are very likely to come to love the name anyway as it is attached to your dd.

thirtysomething · 20/07/2010 13:19

Other suggestions along same lines in the hope you may love one:

Elena Grace
Anya Elizabeth
Maya Grace
Tess Elizabeth
Lydia Grace
Thea Emily
Emilia Grace
Matilda Kate
Kitty Elizabeth
Beatrice Kate
Emma Kate

Here are the Top 100 baby names from 2007 in case it helps with any more ideas. I'm suggesting it because I noticed that the names you've chosen so far are in the top 100.

FakePlasticTrees · 20/07/2010 13:22

what name do you love for her?

Catilla · 20/07/2010 13:24

I agree don't pressurise yourself with a false deadline.

A suggestion:
Since most of us don't actually use our middle names, try thinking of your daughter as a person at different stages of her life, think of calling her name across the playground, etc. Just the first name.

That might help you find a few that you do really like more than others.

We also did the each-write-a-list think and had no overlap! If you have no overlap, then look at the other's list and cross out those you couldn't bear. If neither of you likes each others' choices at all then you have to dig a little further down your preference list. We actually ended up with a name that was on my DH's list and I hadn't even considered.

On the other hand after a few months your baby will just be the person you have named her and that will be that! There's no-one else in life whose name you get to choose - we are very used to just accepting people for who they are.

Good luck!

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 13:25

I like (but he doesn't):

Jessica
Lily

wildwind · 20/07/2010 13:26

Niamh Isla - hope you like

deepdarkwood · 20/07/2010 13:27

If it's upsetting you this much, you need to delay the appt. Give yourselves a couple of days when you don't talk a about it. Then think of a new approach.

But be aware that you may need to compromise a bit - if you can't find a name you both love, that's just what will have to happen.

DH named dd. I had another name in mind - but he was adamant it didn't fit her. I allowed myself to be overruled (although I did like the name he'd chosen very much, it wasn't my first choice) ... and he was quite right - 4 years on, I don't think the name would have suited dd - and in fact, don't even really like it.

deepdarkwood · 20/07/2010 13:29

We used Catalina's approach too, btw - we had 'veto' of names we really hated on each others lists, and then discussed the others.

Btw, I know a good few people who haven't named their kids until around the 6 week mark - I know relatives tend to get a bit pushy, but there's really no reason to rush...

valiumSingleton · 20/07/2010 13:30

Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth

My favourite is Emily Grace, popular though it may be it's my favourite of your options.

I would really like Elizabeth Sophie or Elizabeth Grace with Eliza for short.

skidoodly · 20/07/2010 13:30

Niamh
Edel
Isobel
Jodi

Any of those work?

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 13:30

And I like Elizabeth as a first name (but I would call her Beth or Libby!!)

OP posts:
skidoodly · 20/07/2010 13:31

Also agree on not worrying too much about the middle name, it doesn't matter. Think about what name you want your daughter to be called.

SqueezyB · 20/07/2010 13:31

I agree, cancel the appointment, you still have 3 more weeks to decide!

How about Elizabeth as a first name, seeing as you've used it twice as a MN you clearly like it. It has lots of NN variations. Other suggestions based on the ones you already like:

Sophia
Eliza
Josie
Imogen
Tess
Amelia
Emma
Katherine
Charlotte
Martha
Rosie
Rosa

But I agree that in time your daughter will just become her name, and you won't be able to imagine anything else for her.

OgreRebel · 20/07/2010 13:32

Cancel the appointment.

Have you looked on here at some of the girls' names threads?

Do you like Katharine if you like Katie?

Surprise · 20/07/2010 13:33

what are your husband's favourites? Can you draw straws for who chooses the first name and who chooses the middle name?
