I have been making cards for a few years and have over a hundred.

As I look at them I can see how I have improved as I have gained in confidence but would appreciate someone else's opinion. I will post a couple of photos of cards I have made yesterday and today and maybe, for a laugh will find one from years ago and hopefully an improvement is seen Grin.

I like them. Do you do different styles or are they all similar to those?

LoisLittsLover · 05/05/2020 16:49

Sorry, I think they're quite old fashioned and look like you've used a standard 'kit' to stick shapes onto the card. Sorry

CiderJolly · 05/05/2020 16:52

They’re very pretty.

SunshineCake · 05/05/2020 16:54

I do all sorts. I tend to follow a plan then make my own variations. I have 0 to 80 years to make for so am mindful of that.

The flowerpot ones are ok. Don't like the Best Wishes one, looks unfinished

BumBurnerBum · 05/05/2020 16:54

Are you hoping to sell them?

CrochetBug · 05/05/2020 16:54

Sorry I agree with Lois. They look like the cards I was making 10 years ago.

Craft is a learning curve though!

CrochetBug · 05/05/2020 16:55

Oh the last lot you posted are lovely though!

SunshineCake · 05/05/2020 16:56

The best wishes one I was worried about putting too much on but I will add to it once I have had a think. Thank you all.

I am sorry but I have to agree they are not very original...simply stick on shapes from kits that any one can do. I prefer something much more creative that you have produced yourself.

SunshineCake · 05/05/2020 16:57

Oh God no, not selling! Nowhere near good enough for that. Just looking for ideas. Have to admit, criticism is hard without tips.

Ok, thanks.

Not all of them are copied and some are adapted so half an half but thank you.

The ones with the piggies in the set of photos were all mine.

Ok tips .

There are some good basic ideas but they are missing that 'something'. Its a fine line between too much and not enough though.

And I'm very much a perfectionist so could just be me... the embellishments on the cards in the 1st photo need to be more central. So the card witn the rows of Pearl's and gems they sit slightly to the left. I hope that makes sense. And like I said I'm a perfectionist. It's part of the reason I rarely make cards anymore. I got stressed!
The card with all the butterflies would look better if the green paper was scalloped to match the card imo.

Keep at it though. Honestly some of my efforts when I started various crafts were shocking!
And please take my tips in the spirit they are intended.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 05/05/2020 17:10

They are very sweet and I would love to receive one from a friend or relative knowing they had made it themselves.

SunshineCake · 05/05/2020 17:14

BTW I made all the pieces myself, nothing came pre-cut.

The card with the two rows of green beads an one of pink really annoyed me as I moved and I know it isn't straight but couldn't risk peeling it off! I agree it is a fine line between too much and not enough. Sometimes once I have decided who the card is for I will add personal bits.

Good idea to scallop the backing paper, thank you.

I'm sure you have improved and there is a lot of work in them. I'm sorry, but I have to echo what others have said, and they are more like what I used to make in my teens in the 90's. There are more imaginative designs and styles which would make them more modern looking.

CrochetBug · 05/05/2020 17:21

Oh it's so infuriating when you know something isn't straight and can't change it. I started using a ruler for everything to make sure it was straight and evenly spaced!

I once made my mum a card which took me ages. I'd bought a sheet of peel offs and as I was very skint at the time I only had one set. Having made the whole card, everything measured and stuck using a ruler as a guide I realised the card (on of the long thin ones which I'd used lanscape) was upside down Grin. So it sat on my mums mantelpiece with all the ladies standing on their heads! I honestly could have cried at the time but it's so funny looking back.

I'm tempted to dig out all my card making stuff and make something.

SunshineCake · 05/05/2020 17:48

I'm tempted to chuck all mine.

Daft really. Wasn't expecting so many old fashioned comments.

Oh well.

Thanks all and thanks for the good ideas.

I love them! Would love to get one of those for my birthday x

Megan2018 · 05/05/2020 17:56

I think what matters is, do you like them?

Cards are very subjective, my family buy me pretty dreadful cards by my taste but I love that they thought of me and that’s what matters. Equally they probably think the cards I send are awful. Making them is the same principle.

I like more modern cards @SunshineCake but yours are clearly made with love so they would be nice to receive.

cakeandchampagne · 05/05/2020 17:59

Your cards are lovely!
And I think most people appreciate a handmade card.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 05/05/2020 18:03

Don't bin them! You make the cards for friends and family, you are better placed than anyone else to know what they would like to receive. Everyone's taste is different, OP. I personally prefer the cards in the third photo you posted, but those are the sort of cards I usually go for.
