Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

I'll ask the teen about that @PickAChew! I'm quite enjoying looking at dark academia!

Sewingdufus · 01/09/2023 20:06

@NutellaEllaElla I recently saw someone on utube using little stickers to mark the wrong side of the fabric. I use my sewing clips - coloured top to the front.

Brefugee · 01/09/2023 21:46

i put a pin in mine so i know the right side

Jins · 02/09/2023 09:23

I picked up Simply Sewing yesterday as the free patterns are right up my street. Well maybe not the beach bag. Should sort out some of the viscose stash.

I may get a sewing day tomorrow

TragicMuse · 02/09/2023 15:37

I've just taped the pattern pages for the SOI Ruby skirt.

Now to toile!

dubyalass · 02/09/2023 16:13

I am really looking forward to the autumn because I have no plans from a social POV, no guests coming to stay and plenty of annual leave still to take, so I will be sewing in earnest! The summer has been lovely but I have been insanely busy and I can't wait for a bit of downtime.

SBAM · 02/09/2023 16:17

Im hoping to get a quick bit of sewing in this weekend - I’ve bought some trousers ready for my new job but looking through my wardrobe I don’t have many tops. There’s one I made 6 years ago which I don’t wear often because it has wide waist ties which just don’t hit the right bit of me, the hips are a bit snug for wearing it untucked and it doesn’t look right tucked because of the ties. I’m going to take the ties off and then it should work tucked into high waisted trousers.
I think rethreading the machine might take longer than the actual sewing needed 😂

Brefugee · 03/09/2023 12:53

Quick question: can anyone tell me what these things are called?

Cord stops, @Brefugee

Brefugee · 03/09/2023 19:27

thanks @PickAChew

Jins · 03/09/2023 19:43

Some progress today. I’ve made a sleeveless cadence top in blue and white striped viscose. Pleased with it but I won’t use bought bias binding on lightweight viscose again.

Also sorted through my pattern stash and removed the few remaining stretch patterns and any pattern that needs a zip. I don’t mind sewing zips but I hate wearing clothes with zips.

Sewingdufus · 03/09/2023 19:45

I’m a school teacher. Term starts tomorrow so naturally I’m thinking about Christmas! I’ve made Christmas crowns and bunting. Has anyone made reusable crackers? I want the type you can actually pull! Any hints, tips or pattern recommendations please?

NutellaEllaElla · 03/09/2023 20:30

I've never heard of those before
No sewing for me unforch.

I bought some cheap 'make your own crackers' from The Works - just the shaped cardboard to form the actual cracker. I am planning to make Christmas crowns to go in them, and then pop other bits like. jokes inside as well. I'm sure you would be able to find a template for the card online but these ones came pre-printed with a nice pattern. I'm actually not totally sure if they have a snap in them but I hope so :/

I'm making some Halloween bunting for my dd this week as practice before Christmas.

rivercobbler · 03/09/2023 22:14

sorry, that was for @Sewingdufus

Sewingdufus · 03/09/2023 22:25

Thanks @rivercobbler . I have already used that style of cracker and can confirm they work well!

I’m really looking to make crackers from fabric that are reusable. We already have fabric crowns (I can recommend the Waves & Wild free pattern).

CrimsonAlligator · 09/09/2023 09:25

I had an unexpected day off work yesterday, so thought I’d use it to quickly finish my Melilot shirt…in the end it took me 8 hours to sew the hem and make the button holes!

I really enjoyed making this one, no doubt helped by the fabric I used - a lovely tencel twill. It’s a bit thicker than this pattern was designed for, so there were a couple of challenges along the way, but it just felt so nice to work with! I’ve already ordered some more in a different colour to make another one 😊

That's lovely! I've been eyeing up that pattern for a while.

I've just been on a pattern spree. Bought the Anna Allen Anthea blouse and Philippa trousers, the Fibre Mood Tilly shirt and downloaded a bunch of freebie patterns from Fabrics-Store.com. I have some annual leave coming up so am planning to use it to make a dent in the stash. Lots of sticking together A4 pages to look forward to!

NutellaEllaElla · 09/09/2023 20:52

I attended a pattern drafting workshop today so now I have a bodice pattern block to my measurements that I have no idea what to do with! Haha.

OP posts:
SBAM · 09/09/2023 21:13

Ooh, @NutellaEllaElla that sounds great. Now you can design whatever you fancy (I assume, not 100% sure what you do with a block).

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/09/2023 23:12

That's a gorgeous pattern @SBAM but Elizabeth Hartman patterns are a bit of a steep learning curve if you haven't made a quilt before. There are always lots of tiny bits. At one of the quilt retreats I went to someone was making the dachshund Elizabeth Hartman pattern and it was so fiddly that she changed from making a quilt to making a cushion cover. Grin If you're doing a baby quilt you could always pick four of the animals and add borders to make a small quilt.

CrimsonAlligator · 10/09/2023 00:40

That looks like such a fun pattern @SBAM ! I’ve used a few Elizabeth Harman patterns before, but only to make cushion covers, never a full quilt. I’m sure it’ll be a challenge, but hopefully a fun one.

The shirt does indeed have a concealed button band. Button holes are my nemesis (give me a zip any day!!), so the concealed button band appealed a LOT.

I was tidying up my sewing space earlier today and found a half finished Sewaholic Granville shirt. It was abandoned months ago after I got too frustrated with my messy top stitching. But when I was looking at it today, it didn’t actually look that bad. So, I think I’m going to revisit it. If I can undo the stitching around the collar stand, which is definitely messy as well as highly visible, I reckon I could be on to a winner 🤞

SBAM · 10/09/2023 07:52

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar yes, I was thinking I might just do a couple of the blocks, and have a bit of an emptier ocean than the pattern suggests! I’ve read it through and I think as long as I label all the bits carefully and concentrate on one block at a time I’ll be ok. I’ve made quilts before, but always made up the designs myself, never from a pattern.

@CrimsonAlligator sometimes a project just needs a time-out until it learns to behave (or we see it with fresh eyes I guess).

bookbook · 10/09/2023 14:21

I thought today was a good day to cut out the elodie wrap dress for my daughter 🙄. The pieces are enormous , so I am having to scrabble on the floor
. I bought extra for the directional print, but not quite enough. Its a bit like tetris …..
