Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

This book

Stitch and bitch #7. Hanging by a thread
SleepingisanArt · 26/07/2023 23:38

Feeling a bit grumpy. Ordered some trousers online which I won't be receiving as they are apparently out of stock even though they were showing as in stock when I ordered them..... So now I'm hunting for a pattern for a pair of 'pull on' (definitely no zip) trousers with either a straight or tapered leg. (Being a lot bit round and quite short the wide leg patterns I have seen are a no no!) I will not be defeated......

Sewing Bee was tense this evening but I enjoyed it immensely, the right person won and my goodness the final transforming dress was amazing.....

PickAChew · 26/07/2023 23:39

I've been after that book but it's ££ (and not a tenner!)

I'd slash and spread to add the flare evenly so you don't get sticky out bits.

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 23:44

Yes I think the slash and spread is how that page in the book is saying.I can’t remember how much it was - I bought it a few years ago from eBay I think, it’s a new one - presumably someone else bought it with enthusiasm like me…..
Its very complicated - think it’s for students doing pattern cutting degrees! I’ve looked around for courses but none anywhere in the south, I’d have to go to London. I’m determined to have a go at teaching myself though.
Book may end up back on eBay!

Can you post a pic of the trousers wot you would have won. I've a few ideas in my head but want to check I'm thinking of the right kind of style.

PickAChew · 26/07/2023 23:54

Pietra pants and Acajou pants are both pull on and tapered (my kind of pattern!)

SleepingisanArt · 27/07/2023 00:31

@pastabest something along these lines - I've seen them on a 'curve' model and the shape still looks good. (I'm very good at hiding my round bits so the leg shape is the most important part.

@PickAChew - thank you! Checking them out now (I'm meant to be sleeping....)

@SleepingisanArt

Have a look at Sinclair’s Poppy Pants. They come in different height variations so fitting is a bit easier and they are a straightforward sew.
It’s my go to trouser pattern - I’ve made 4 pairs in the long style, one cropped and a wearable toile pair of shorts

Poppy easy fitting pants for woven fabrics (PDF)

GnomeDePlume · 27/07/2023 07:27

@NutellaEllaElla if the fabric is already fraying l wonder whether you need to overlock the edges without trimming and then bind. Canvas fabrics seem to be determined to return to individual thread state!

Sewingdufus · 27/07/2023 08:43

@SleepingisanArt have a look at Love Notions, I’m sure they do what you’re looking for. Allegros maybe? I can’t remember the name!

NutellaEllaElla · 27/07/2023 09:22

Sorry @GnomeDePlume I'm not sure what you mean by bind in this context

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I'm a Libran so off to spend ages trying to make a decision (or I'll just get them all!!)

Jins · 27/07/2023 11:44

It must be my lucky day. I gambled on the bobbin thread lasting and it did.

Quick, buy a lottery ticket. Grin

GnomeDePlume · 27/07/2023 13:28

@NutellaEllaElla wot @kittykarate said!

I find it helps with fabrics which are determined to fray and return to their component threads.

Sewingdufus · 27/07/2023 13:43

2 new indie patterns released this week that both look great.

Waves & Wild Jupiter leggings. Yes, we’ve probably all got leggings patterns, but this one looks better than the freebie I had, lots of options with more measuring points to give a better fit. No affliction, just love W&W, they got me sewing! Bought this morning, printed already, about to tape and then trace!

Sinclair Patterns Whisper boy shorts - they also look great and am very tempted!

kittykarate · 27/07/2023 14:50

Those Waves and Wild leggings look good - I have a similar pattern from Jalie, but I can be a sucker for a pattern with a lot of fitting help.

Though I have a confession - I have played away and bought some clothing. Tikiboo had an outlet sale the other day, so I bought 2 pairs of leggings for £10 each. You can barely buy the decent lycra for that. Admittedly one pair has easter eggs on them, but you know, I have no shame.

bookbook · 27/07/2023 17:17

I love Waves and Wild Patterns ( started buying them when it was MBJM ) . My grandson used to be clothed head to foot in them , and as a family we all have a lot of hoodies , t shirts , tunics , baby clothes etc . And I have made more of their sunhats for every age than I care to think about Grin The instructions are excellent

Sewingdufus · 27/07/2023 17:41

@bookbook I’m very pro W&W as they got me sewing when they were MBJM with the Beachcomber.

Jins · 27/07/2023 18:06

Well the dress is finished apart from the hem. I’m not loving it 😥

The first one I made was lovely and swishy and drapey and this one, although much better made, just hangs and makes me look fat.

The fit across shoulders and high bust is spot on though so yay for that. I think I’m going to wash it first in case it softens any more and after that who knows? It looks truly awful with a belt.

NutellaEllaElla · 27/07/2023 21:23

Thanks @kittykarate and @GnomeDePlume. Binding is really my nemesis, it looks dire and realistically, i'm not going to do it if I can avoid it. If i'm making a big mistake please let me know but i'm hoping just to overlock it (and i've already sewn half the seams for the main fabric...).

GnomeDePlume · 27/07/2023 21:43

@NutellaEllaElla as this is a bag I think you will be safe. I guess you won't be planning on washing it too often which is when the unravelling fairies really get to work.
