Hello, the old thread fizzled out after christmas, so here is a brand spanking new one.

You don't have to be at all particularly talented just enthusiastic

NOOOOooooo don';t link to spoolbirds! I love them!
It would make a very cute buggy toy though and I do have some very boyish funky fabric (robots and monsters and trucks, not on the same fabric though)
I made her DD loads of softies so want to make something a bit different for the boys, but good idea, will keep it as a 'sapre'

I'm not here though, I am sewing my sisters birthday present here

'Poof' and like that, I am gone!

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 20:25

'Poof' like that, I am back.

I have cut out all my bits (and for one for me) and now I only have half an hour before DH gets home, so I might just fuck it for tonight and panic tomorrow

Alicetheinvisible · 30/03/2010 20:45

Jack

Exhausted tonight, DD only just settled. Plan is for me to get the house straight tomorrow daytime, then when DD has gone to bed, get DH to carry my sewing stuff downstairs so i can have a little sort through and see what i have got.

Love the birds mobile, might make that for DS (feels strange to say that!)

Hello everyone - may I join in? I've been spending far too much time hanging around on US quilting forums recently, and could do with a reality check. They all seem to have the most amazing well equipped sewing rooms, where they retire to whip up creations without any fuss (or swearing).

I have abandoned knitting in favour of sewing - quicker results and I am completely in love with fabric, particularly 1930s florals. Still getting the hang of quilting - it's trickier than I thought, but am half way through hand quilting a baby quilt for a new niece or nephew due to arrive in May. And then I want to make a friendship braid quilt.

But am actually thinking this might be the time to have a look in the dcs' wardrobes and see what they need for the summer. Making clothes for children feels like a summer activity - maybe it's the fabric, and dd has definitely grown out of most of last year's ones.

And I really want to do some applique. Not sure where to start, or what to applique, but I saw the most amazing applique quilt the other day in a book in the library, which inspired me.

Alicetheinvisible · 30/03/2010 21:18

Hello

I can't believe this is 3 pages already!

HI there snickers. Hand quilting? >

I do not have the patience for quilting unfortunately, I have lots of bits cut out but I never get round to doing anything more!

I want to applique but I have tried it with bondaweb but my machine doesn't do zigzag stitching close enough to hide the raggy edges.

I really want to try the freezer paper method but I can't, for the life of me, work out wtf freezer paper is!
Anyone?

snickersnack · 30/03/2010 21:51

I like the idea of hand quilting - you can do it in front of the tv. Which may explain my wonky stitching...I tried machine quilting but it is really hard work with an ordinary sewing machine if the quilt is bigger than a cot sized one.

But if you pick the right quilt pattern, putting the patchwork top together can be super-fast. Think it's just about being strategic about what you choose.

I think you can buy freezer paper from specialist quilt shops - like here. I know Waitrose doesn't stock it! I would be very interested to find out how you get on...

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 22:05

But what is it?!

I will bookmark that though, once I run out of things to do

Have you seen this pin cushion? I was just googling quilt patterns and spotted it, am definately going to make one for my sister as well as her project bag

I got some craft eyes today so really should be making amigurumi's to sell, they are perfect size for tiny ami's. from here if anyone needs any 10 pairsa of 5m eyes for 80p and they arrived in a few days, very impressed.
Also got some of these about 40 for a quid, not sure what to do with them but they are cute, aen't they?

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 22:05

5mm, not 5m, that woudl be very odd

wastingaway · 30/03/2010 22:10

Evening! Some really great projects and ideas here. The bird mobile is lovely and the duck feet are fabulous! I'm inspired by everyone's lists.

I'm going to have another go at my wristwarmers, they're driving me nuts! The pattern is vague and I keep having to pull it out and start again.

I bought some stuff for a 'scrapbooking' project I've got to do this week that I forgot about, for MILs birthday.
I've never done any 'proper' scrapbooking before, but I've been looking at the stuff in the shop, and online and think I should be ok.

I'm looking forward to learning how to use my sewing machine, but I want to get on top of all the WIPs and ideas I've had for a while before venturing into fabric-land.

wastingaway · 30/03/2010 22:14

Love the pin cushion.

PMSL at 5m eyes.

KnottyLocks · 30/03/2010 22:18

Jack, have you tried sewing the applique round twice on the smallest zigzag? Just a thought...or hand stitching it? You're now swearing aren't you?

I love that bird mobile. I've made little birds in the past but I love the shape of those. Must have a rumage through my fabrics.

JackRabbitBauer · 30/03/2010 23:22

duck feet
Trice, I missed your post! those socks are cute!

Knotty, yes. Yes I am.

overmydeadbody · 30/03/2010 23:48

I don't have the patience for quilting either and admire anyone who does.

I have dabbled in hand-stitched applique, but now only use it to sew emergency patches on DS's trousers.

Funnily enough, DS is a bit of an applique addict though, I love his haphazard approach of just randomly cutting up my scraps and sewing them on to each other with big colourful stitches

Love the pincushion.

I though this thread would help me cross things off my list, instead it has just made my list grow longer

overmydeadbody · 30/03/2010 23:50

Actually, I am not sure I like quilts really, as much as I admire the skill that goes into quilting.

wastingaway · 31/03/2010 00:00

The list never gets shorter OMDB.

Pheebe · 31/03/2010 08:13

Morning ladies

My fav crafty websites list is such a mess I plan to start gathering them all together in a word doc so keep the urls coming and I'll share the doc when ready

(asked for suggestions on a separate thread but it bombed lol)

snickersnack · 31/03/2010 08:50

OMDB - I do sort of agree. I really don't like most traditional quilts and quilt patterns. All those sludgy colours. Some are truly horrible. What did it for me was staying with my in-laws who live near a quilt shop. They had the most sensational one displayed in the window - all bright florals on a white background in a completely amazing pattern. At that point I decided to practice and practice so that one day I could make something similar.

Amigurumi does appeal - dd does love little animals. I probably need to know which way to hold a crochet hook first though!

MitsubishiWarrioress · 31/03/2010 09:34

We have this shop in our village and it is like a candy store, the fabrics are mind blowingly beautiful. I sometimes make bags for friends and the materials make lovely linings...

I am going to try to do 10 mins on a project each day..which isn't much I know but at least I would be doing something.

Some lovely things going on here...very inspirational .

tjacksonpfc · 31/03/2010 10:42

Hi can i join this thread please. my craft ends at cross stitch though.

I've never been able to knit and people give up showing me in the end lol.

I'm currently stitching rourkes drift for dp. It was one of those things that you see on ebay and seems like a good idea at the time. It's been on the go for 2 years lol

Blottedcopybook · 31/03/2010 14:03

Hello! May I join in? I keep a craft blog and I'm running a swap for parents and children to do if any of you are interested?

JackRabbitBauer · 31/03/2010 14:28

Rourkes drift? Wow! How big is it? 2 years is impressive as well

omdb, yes, from past experience these threads only add stuff to my list, I have been ruthless lately and chucked a load of UFO's and removed things I hadn't started so my list is a lot shorter than it was. WOn't be long before it builds up though!

Nice blogg blotted, although DD1 refuses any craft that doesn't involve glitter and pritt stick, and I have banned glitter from teh house after the Easter 2009 Glitter Disaster

Must not be here, must go pack and then will be at my mums with no laptop or MN access so will see you ladies later tonight for a brief farewell!

Pheeb, I have loads of links bookmarked but the copying and poasting is so dull, if you know a faster way to get all my bookmarks together then let me know and I will share happily!

Blottedcopybook · 31/03/2010 14:47

Thanks Jack! Glitter is a bad word in our house too, I imagine for similar reasons. DD1 and DS2 found a full 5 pack of the chunky tubes of glitter and decided to make the carpet look pretty. I still find glitter nearly a year later! xx

trice · 31/03/2010 17:11

I did a patchwork cushion cover once which took me about eight years to finish. It was very eighties laura ashley - I should dig it out as it must be nearly back in fashion. Hats off to all you quilters.

I just spotted this photo on a blog and I now I want to make tiny wrapping paper bunting for my easter table. I just need some nice string.
