My art - do you like it?

I'm a "naive artist" and paint for fun. Don't know if it's totally rubbish or not. Would appreciate some honest opinions!

@GBooArt i would try and change it up a bit and put a different slant on it. Although it’s nice it’s just too similar but if you like creating it and it brings you joy and you’re not trying to sell then what’s the harm? She has been around for a while so if you were trying to sell definitely change it up.

I have tried to sell some but really limited success (3 sold for under £20 each in 2 years!). I was interested to know people's opinions, i.e. are there no sales because they're rubbish?!

How should I change it up do you think?

Yep, I like them. I could see one of them in my house tbh

Onlyonekenobe · 08/02/2025 23:34

I like them, but one small one would be plenty because they're so stylised and three in a row doesn't have any artistic merit imo. I wouldn't put any in my house though, as generally I find it a bit weird having some random on your walls/shelves. Obvious exception for the greats Grin

There are no sales because they're too common at the moment and the market is flooded.

Can you move away from the 'women with huge eyes and straight hair' look?

What else are you good at painting?

It's an eye catching style. Would work well as a book illustration. Do you paint anything else?

Mainly similar to this. A few abstract pieces, too. I'll post a couple more pics.

This is quite unoriginal but that’s not what’s wrong with it. This kind of simplistic approach works when done by a talented artist who can paint in a “proper”, complex manner. When it’s used to mask limited skill, it shows. I might be wrong, but I think this is the case here. Sorry.

Thingymajigii · 08/02/2025 23:37

They're fun but maybe too similar to the Margot in Margate style.

Thanks for your honesty! I've no formal training. So limited skill, no doubt!

I don't really think I'm good at painting! Just about to post a couple more.

Art is subjective. I wouldn’t buy it but good for you for doing what you enjoy! Keep going and don’t worry what others think, if you love it keep going!

Ankhmo · 08/02/2025 23:42

No I don't like it.

SD1978 · 08/02/2025 23:43

Can you maybe attend classes? They are nice, within a common theme- and there are other artists who do this who have been mentioned- maybe try som more formal training, to develop your style, or to maybe find something different that it more unique to you? I would be utterly incapable, and have no artistic ability, but you must do, so make the art itself a hobby to explore

MJconfessions · 08/02/2025 23:45

The 1st one is totally awful (sorry). The composition just doesn’t look right, the proportions are off, the quality isn’t there.

However I do see an improvement in the 2nd one. And your style seems to be more developed in the 3rd one, like you found your feet. That one looks fine

I like random, we have a tiny tiny local gallery near us that puts on two shows a year by local artists. we've bought 3 pieces so far. Because we were drawn to the individual pieces.

This wouldn't have raised a flicker of interest from me, but others might.....

Doitrightnow · 08/02/2025 23:52

It's not for me but art is so subjective. If it's for fun what does it matter?!

GBooArt · 08/02/2025 23:53

The first one is one I sold.

Thanks. My favourite is the second (blue) one.

Wtf 😱
It looks like a jaundiced fetus.

murasaki · 09/02/2025 00:01

Moving towards this being joke thread if even one of the last lot sold. The first ones weren't awful , if not for me and more suited to a tote bag with a slogan, but the last two?

I did chuckle at this. Even if your comment was intended to be mean.

I wasn't being mean.

It looks liked jaundiced fetus.

Why would you sit down and think,
"Today I'm going to paint a fetus and make it yellow"

Paint flowers
Portraits
Landscapes..
Have a good at a happy little tree, bob Ross style.
Look at the work of Rubén Belloso Adorna..

The first one of the latter ones sold (messy face picture). This is not intended to be a "joke thread". That just seems a bit of a meaan comment.

Can you adapt to draw pets in the bright mug shot style? Perhaps with clothes? Dog in a beret and breton top. Perhaps multiples of the owner/s and the pet/s.

OnSecondThoughts · 09/02/2025 00:07

They're ok for someone just starting out. Better than I could do anyway. Maybe think about having something in the background, eg the moon, or a boat, just to give it some... context or whatever the word is.
