It was me looking for leopard print and I’ll have a look at Rainbow Fabrics, thank you. Coincidentally, I bought some red leopard print in the Abakhan bargain bucket in Manchester today!

ClearHoldBuild · 01/04/2025 07:04

Latest make, I love it, it comes just above the knee.

I like that @ClearHoldBuild An example of the perfect fabric for a pattern as well!

I’ve now hemmed and finished 4 of the 6 curtains. I’m now very good at whip stitching. The last two will have to wait as access is temporarily restricted with some of DHs car. I’ve learnt to ignore this behaviour over the years.

So fun sewing resumes and I’ve had so many patterns printed I’m not sure where to start

ClearHoldBuild · 03/04/2025 12:11

Thank you @Jins every time I’ve worn it I’ve been complimented. Along with the bestie bag I think it’s one of my favourite makes.

Jins · 04/04/2025 10:15

Lovely sunny day today so I’m getting some fabrics washed ready to start.

First fabric and pattern matched though. This is a random viscose twill that feels gorgeous but when it arrived the pattern was rather bigger than I’d expected. No problem for the short version of these which will be this years coverup for the walk to the beach etc.

I love that pattern @Jins 😍
Just sewing a toile and accidentally bound the armpit instead of the neckline! Time to pack up until tomorrow.

Jins · 09/04/2025 15:56

I bought some gorgeous linen look fabric from fabric land and it arrived today. It’s the Dutch denim colour and an absolute bargain. It’s viscose spandex and will become trousers for the summer.

I’ve temporarily lost my enthusiasm for sewing, so thought I’d order some clothes to fill the gaps in my holiday wardrobe instead.

I ended up with long sleeve shirts that don’t go further than my elbows and full length trousers that end somewhere on my calf. A useful reminder of why I sew! 😆

Just ducking in here as I seem to have acquired not only my beloved 1946 Singer I got back up and working, but also now appear to have been given my mother's obscenely expensive (like 4 grand of obscene expense) Bernina which has been a delinquent bugger of a machine for her to the point she's been in tears over it. 10 minutes at my house and we worked out it wasn't her, it's the bobbin winding system on it that's defective and it's gone for a little holiday at the sewing machine repair shop (aka Delinquent Machine Borstal).

So - I'm pretty decent at patchwork - but there are only so many things I can put a quilt on and I need to think about moving on to clothing... but I'm fat, and terrified of screwing up - anyone got any ideas for decent idiot proof patterns for a size 22ish lady rather than the waifs wafting around in floaty dresses on Etsy?!

You could have a look at Cris Wood https://criswoodsews.com She is larger and apple-shaped like me. Her patterns are zero waste so you measure and cut rather than using paper patterns, which as a quilter myself suits my brain better.

I am thinking of making a sleep mask with the lighter mornings. I have some Liberty tana lawn or should I get a scrap of silk?

Yalz · 13/04/2025 12:01

Tana lawn is very soft, and has the advantage that you have it already. Does yours have a dark background?
If you make the sleep mask out of it and don’t like it you could always buy some silk afterwards.

For me the only problem might be if using the Tana lawn means you don’t then have enough for whatever you originally intended it for.

Daffyyellow · 13/04/2025 13:48

Bob Pants - has anyone tried them? Any hints or tips please?

I’m a plus size apple shape, thinking of grading up for the waist, then grading down below the hips.

Isabelle70 · 13/04/2025 13:50

@Yalz mine is a dark navy base colour with some small dots. I purchased it to make one of those round, draw up make up bags but never made one! There will be a metre of it tucked away somewhere safe.
I have found a free pattern so I will have a go at the weekend.

twobluechickens · 13/04/2025 20:58

@Daffyyellow I’ve made two pairs and I love them! I reduced the rise on the second pair as I hate feeling restricted around my middle. I’m pear shaped so just went with my usual size but I have the elastic slightly looser for comfort. They just need to get over your hips so you’ll be fine if you’re grading up for the waist, but you might not need to - they are pretty generous.

PickAChew · 14/04/2025 18:05

As they're elasticated, you might get away with no grading, unless you have a very prominent tummy, rather than just thicker all around your waist.

Good point, thank you!

ShoAndSew · 18/04/2025 13:23

sorry, i realise my contributions have been mostly to pick your brains... and here i am to do it again.

Daughter wants a fancy tote bag - i have already made several but she wants a more robust one with more pockets etc, and a gusset

what are your go-to places for bags?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/04/2025 13:45

Help, please! I've just cut out a pair of Tilly Safyia trousers and have stupidly cut out 4 front legs!!!! It's only cheap material, so it's not the end of the world, but is it at least worth me sewing them up and seeing if they're a total disaster? I'm very cross with myself!

InMySpareTime · 18/04/2025 13:58

Have you got enough fabric to make two pairs? Or a contrast fabric that you could make the extra front legs into another pair?
fronts and backs of legs are pretty different on adult trousers, especially women’s trousers.

Not got any extra fabric and I think mixing two fabrics would be horrible. I've put the back pattern on top of the cut out fabric and they're not dramatically different (the back crotch is just a wee bit longer) so I might sew them up and see what they're like, as I haven't got an especially big bum!

DiggoryVenn · 18/04/2025 15:18

@ShoAndSew Noodlehead are great for bag patterns. Some are paid for, but others are free ones (under Tutorials). I have made the Cargo duffel bag before.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/04/2025 15:54

The trousers are done and fine. I think Tilly patterns allow so much extra room that if anything they fit better on the bum than usually!!! 😂

OperationalSupport · 18/04/2025 17:15

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie glad they’ve turned out well. My Safiyas are on the floor in the doom pile, they’re somehow too big and too small simultaneously and make it look like I have no bum.

Oh dear! Well, they are never going to be the most flattering but I like them with a vest and an open shirt, or even with a blazer for work when I feel like basically wearing pyjamas!

Did you cut to your measurements? With T&B patterns, I find it better to totally ignore her measurements and just cut a straight size 5, which is a 14 and generally my size when I buy clothes. When I tried following measurements with her patterns, things came out absolutely enormous.
