you could make one out of cardboard, or thin pieces of wood.

Jins · 22/04/2025 13:47

I made a cardboard one once but the expanding ones are next level. Choose number of buttons, position of top and bottom and stretch to fit. Almost foolproof. I say almost because in sewing there’s always something that could go wrong

ShoAndSew · 22/04/2025 14:04

Sewing is truly the embodiment of Murphy's law.

ClearHoldBuild · 22/04/2025 18:21

After many attempts over the years and bad results due to the pattern not being quite right I have finally found the ultimate bucket hat pattern! And it’s a free one 🎉🎉 Merchant and Mills https://merchantandmills.com/uk/free-the-bucket-hat-pdf
just got to close up where it pulls through.

Castlerigg · 22/04/2025 22:35

No sewing today, but I am 3D printing a button spacer after seeing today’s posts!

twobluechickens · 23/04/2025 21:50

@Castlerigg wow, that’s next level!

ShoAndSew · 24/04/2025 10:28

fab bucket hat - i have the Waves & Wild (free) pattern, but i think i like that one better.
Having said that: my hat making days are over, all those pesky curves!!

Chewbecca · 24/04/2025 10:30

I've made that M&M hat a few times, it's very satisfying! I find the crown a little high. But still made more 🤣

Castlerigg · 25/04/2025 19:34

@twobluechickens It broke when I removed it from the print bed, but the filament was old, it goes brittle eventually. I’ll try again with some new stuff.

twobluechickens · 25/04/2025 19:47

I’m still impressed!

Frumpyunicorn · 27/04/2025 20:47

I have made a donny shirt and almost finished my zadie dress in a viscose jaquard. I am really pleased with the shirt but I am not sure how the dress will turn out as I think the fabric has stretched a bit.

Castlerigg · 28/04/2025 06:49

I did very little other than sewing yesterday, and made good progress on my patchwork skirt. The rows are becoming unwieldy now, as they’re so long. I eventually decided on each row being four patches longer than the previous one. I’ve done the first six rows.

twobluechickens · 28/04/2025 23:06

I’m looking forward to some sewing this weekend coming. Been busy enjoying the sunshine recently so haven’t wanted to be inside in my dark sewing cave.

Quite fancy a new linen top or two. Or perhaps a roomy shirt.

Daffyyellow · 29/04/2025 01:31

After a very personal crisis I am sewing again.

Sunday I cut out and Monday I made a Waves and Wild mashup, chest up it’s a Cuppa Tee but with a Beachcomber swing, longer than a t-shirt but not quite tunic length. There’s another one coming soon in navy Broderie anglaise jersey. Monday night I cut out a toile for Bob pants and I’ve also got a Cashmerette Fairfax Jacket in process from JYSK quilted blankets!

twobluechickens · 29/04/2025 07:03

Hope all’s ok @Daffyyellow - sounds like you’ve got plenty to be getting on with!

Jins · 29/04/2025 11:29

Sewing can be very therapeutic @Daffyyellow

i made a thing! Short jumpsuit as a coverup for beach/pool. Looks awful on the hanger, better on, but I should have checked waistline before launching into it as it’s 2-3cm too high.

Made from a remnant left over from a dress I made for a wedding

Over the last few days I have taped together the Avelia bomber jacket pattern, Jupiter leggings, the Bob Pants and now I’ve run out of sellotape!!

Bob pants cut out of double gauze, they look massive, navy bamboo leggings next but I need to finish off my strawberry top before I thread change to dark on the overlocker and coverstitch.

twobluechickens · 01/05/2025 08:33

I am playing around with a top pattern to see if I can turn it into a trapeze dress/tunic. Also going to be brave and cut into my beautiful cobalt blue denim for the Heidi jeans by Sewing Masin - they’ve been on my to-make list for about a year and I just need to take the plunge.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 01/05/2025 09:00

I buy sellotape in massive packs now.

I'm struggling with arms at the moment - although I've lost lots of weight (over 4 stone) and have regained my waistline - my arms haven't shown the effect yet, so I keep making stuff that fits beautifully on my waist and doesn't work on my arms at all. Driving me mad and I'm avoiding cutting into any decent fabric cos patterns just disappoint!

Daffyyellow · 01/05/2025 19:18

Well Bob (Pants) needs to change his name to Clown!!

What a disaster . . . they’re **ing massive, ridiculously huge. I had a suspicion they might be but they’re even bigger than anticipated. What a waste of time. Hrumph.

Jins · 01/05/2025 19:40

They aren’t a style that suits me @Daffyyellow so I’m not tempted to try them. I’m far too short for anything along those lines.

Today I’ve been doing alterations. I picked up a khaki tencel dolman shirt in Tesco for £4. They only had one and it was going to be too big but I loved the colour and style so I bought it thinking it can’t be too tricky to take it in. I was wrong. It’s taken hours. I did french seams on the sides but then it was too bulky round the cuff so I had to do a bit of bodging. Looks ok but quite a faff. I’ve put new elastic and shoulder straps on a stretch cami top that I use for sleeping in which probably wasn’t worth the effort. Finally I’ve taken some linen trousers in. I’ve lost 1.5 stone now and I’m a size or so smaller in most patterns nowadays so I’ve got a lot of tracing in my future

twobluechickens · 01/05/2025 22:40

Ah what a shame @Daffyyellow! I had to reduce the rise on mine and tbh it’s still a bit high.

Are they too long, too wide, or both?

Daffyyellow · 01/05/2025 22:42

Ridiculously baggy. I’m an apple shape but my legs are nicely shaped - completely swamped by the Bobs though!

twobluechickens · 02/05/2025 23:35

Cut out and sewed up a Deer & Doe plantain tee this evening. Quite pleased with it, just the hems to finish. Will be very useful so I’m going to make a few in different colours.

Daffyyellow · 06/05/2025 16:53

Shesh! Rookie error even though I’m no rookie!! HP Printer, printing from iPad - pattern didn’t print to scale. I’ve printed, stuck and cut half a dozen patterns recently and can’t trust any of them . . . .argh!!

Definite scale errors with Waves & Wild’s Jupiter Leggings and Peppermint Mag’s Paddington top, likely with Bob Pants (would explain a lot) and others. So have dug deep (blown the sellotape budget) and paid Jenny Stitches to print them for me!!

Does anyone have any ‘work arounds’ for the iPad HP printing issue please? Tried opening files in Word, but scale still wrong but also different to printing directly from files. Would consider a new printer if anyone has any recommendations? TIA.
