@Mygreyhair a horizontal dart across the back, above the patch pockets.

Mygreyhair · 11/12/2024 20:19

@InMySpareTime perfect! Thank you.

I’ve been making good use of the mountain of sawdust my DH created while making my new sewing table (it’s almost finished 😃). I made a couple of pin cushions and a tailor’s sausage/ sleeve roll. Wonder what else I can use sawdust for…

draft excluders are a good use of sawdust.

I need to ask the hive mind - my daughter (she's an adult) is after a sort of crop-top fleece with a half zip. Anyone know any good patterns? a bit like the pic.

oh thank you - i'll have a peruse.

ShoAndSew · 12/12/2024 20:46

thank you - i knew i could rely on you lot!

Rosenspants · 13/12/2024 08:42

Am intrigued by the sawdust recycling! Brilliant!
Got sewing machine out after finishing a work project that was so all absorbing that I haven’t sewn for a bit. Definitely in need of some sewing therapy. Someone on here (I’m sure it was in here) mentioned the Paper Theory LB pullover …which I am so pleased about as I love the shape of this type of top and the option to have it sleeveless to layer over a thinner t shirt or a thermal.
I decided to make a calico toile because fitting isn’t my strong suit and I really want this to work. I need to lengthen it …probably about 5” as I like my tops longer and have a long torso. If anyone has done this, where did you cut the lengthen line? (There isn’t one on the pattern). I was thinking a little below the arm holes? I realise the toile is calico, so no stretch but I think the length alteration will be necessary even with a knit.

Toile

Are the side seams almost completely straight on that pattern @Rosenspants ? Or do they flare out? It looks like it’s the former, in which case you can lengthen it at any point below the arm.

Does lengthening it mean it’s going to end at a different point than the pattern was drafted for? E.g. lower hip, rather than high hip. If that’s the case, check that there will be enough room for the jumper to fit at that point. As my body is pear shaped, I’d need to flare out the seam a bit for my hips. That may not be an issue for you, but worth checking.

Alternatively, adding a little split seam would help a longer jumper fall better. it’s an easy thing to add - https://papertheorypatterns.com/pages/how-to-sew-a-split-seam

Welcome to the thread and to this new hobby@siali!

How to Sew a Split Seam

A split seam is an incredibly versatile detail that can be used across most garments in lots of ways. They can alter the silhouette, changing a regular pair of trousers into flares, add movement to a dress or skirt and add interest to a top or jumper....

Rosenspants · 13/12/2024 11:20

Thanks @CrimsonAlligator so much. It does seem to be straight which is why I have needed to grade up towards the hip...I may even have to grade up an additional size for the longer length as I have disporportionately big hips. I am determined to toile the pattern until I have exactly what I need!

I will also take a look at that link for a split seam...may be another solution.

ShoAndSew · 13/12/2024 11:24

thanks all for the half-zip suggestions, i'll have a look next week (no access to sewing for a week) and maybe pick up some fabric in the new year.

ChoccyJules · 18/12/2024 20:42

Hi Team, does anyone know if Toldi-Lock Overlocker thread fits Brother Overlockers? It’s cheaper so am tempted as it gets average-good reviews but someone said they were smaller spools…This is the first time I have had to change the thread it came with!

PickAChew · 18/12/2024 21:00

They're decent sized spools, @choccyjules but I don't rate the quality compared with Madeira. It's quite fluffy and gets even fluffier in the wash and when I've used it to stitch without a regular machine I've had to repair seams.

ChoccyJules · 18/12/2024 21:10

I don’t know what the ones which came with the machine are, I need to investigate. I haven’t heard of Madeira ones.

CrimsonAlligator · 18/12/2024 22:57

@ChoccyJules I currently have Toldi-lock on my overlocker. I may have been extremely unlucky, but one of the spools is literally made up of loose bits of thread. I’ve had far more practice rethreading my machine than I ‘d like and won’t be buying it again.

I’ve had better results with some cheapo thread I found on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08JYJ541S?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 - I don’t have a Brother overlocker though, so can’t comment on compatibility, but these spools are twice the size of Toldi-lock for a similar price.

I too am off to google Madeira thread….

PickAChew · 18/12/2024 23:08

Madeira is a little pricier than toldilock but almost as smooth and strong as sew all and everything I have stitched with it has stayed nice in the wash for a long time.

I bought a few colours of toldilock when I got my overlocker during the pandemic and stock of pretty much everything was patchy. I tried some madeira when I needed a different colour and ended up replacing the lot.

twobluechickens · 19/12/2024 20:29

I use Moon thread on my overlocker, cheap but seems ok. Haven’t had any incidences of it breaking so far.

Just started cutting and sticking the freebie Atelier Jupe Marly trapper hat for my dad, only to find that there seems to be an error with the pattern. No biggie, I can fudge it, but I’ve emailed them to query it.

ChoccyJules · 19/12/2024 23:17

Found Madeira at Hobbycraft, £6 a spool.

CrimsonAlligator · 20/12/2024 11:30

I almost finished the Grainlime Farrow Dress - just need to add a hook & eye

I really wasn’t sure if this style of dress would work for me, so used some cheap denim which was a bit heavier than the recommended fabrics. I LOVE the end result. It’s one of those dresses that looks plain & boring on a hanger, but interesting and flattering once it’s on. I can see myself wearing this all the time 😊

Rosenspants · 20/12/2024 17:16

@CrimsonAlligator I love the shape of that dress!

NutellaEllaElla · 21/12/2024 13:34

Skirt.

Hello it’s been a very long time since I’ve gone near my sewing machine, however I just saw this skirt and am inspired. It’s so chic. Any ideas on a suitable pattern?
