Thank you both. It's this @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack. I had thought i was starting with the garter stitch section as it does start with four rows of it. Different versions have this at different thicknesses. I now think I got that wrong and the garter stitch section is the bit that's worked last.

Aah, I see! I think this projects notes and photos explain it
www.ravelry.com/projects/marystoverscalais/countess-of-landsfeld

I misread the instructions, it's only this row that's repeated Next row K to 3stitches after the wrapped stitch. W &t. not both rows, so it gradually moves out to both edges and form the shawl into a curved shape at the edge

NiceCardigan · 25/08/2021 19:57

Gosh everyone has been busy and welcome to the newbies.

I’m still working on my shawl and would like to take it on holiday with me at the weekend but not sure if it will be long enough by then.

20 rows out of 60 leg rows completed 😊 I'm really pleased so far!

Thank you very much @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack I think you're right. Which means I have to now work out how to undo what I do when I started it, because I hadn't understood that. Can you do that, I wonder -unpick a cast on? Hi him. Every day is a school day.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 25/08/2021 22:49

I found the way the pattern is written a bit confusing but it reads as though you start the scalloped edge, then the lace and then finish with the neck edge, but I can't see why you'd do a picot edge at the neck...

I've unpicked a cast on before by picking up all the stitches on the next row with a needle and waste yarn and then cutting the cast on every few stitches...

MerylSqueak · 25/08/2021 23:15

Thank you very much. I think it was the picot edge - and not fully getting to grips with the pattern before starting- that got me thinking it was the other way around. Looks like I have a new skill to learn. Thank you very much again. I probably would have frogged the whole thing otherwise. Flowers

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 25/08/2021 23:24

No worries, I'm just hoping I haven't told you a lot of rubbish Blush

sophs29 · 26/08/2021 07:39

@ForCluckSake lovely little haul there 😍 I might have to do a rainbow blanket one day! They look so fun!

@MerylSqueakim so glad you've worked it out between yourself and @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack I don't have a clue when it comes to knitting, it all sounds so confusing 😫😂

@NiceCardigan that's very pretty! Looks like a lovely pattern!

And @lucysmam that's looking great! Are you doing the socks you sent a photo of upthread?

lazylinguist · 26/08/2021 07:47

That's the kind of idea that brings me out in a cold sweat Grin. Like steeking Shock. My two worst weaknesses as a knitter are sewing up and undoing problems/mistakes. Even dropping a stitch scares me, never mind undoing whole cast-on rows! Sorry Meryl - that's probably not very helpful Blush.

It's older mini-linguist's 16th birthday today! She's not up yet (obvs - teenager). Dh is making her a cake this morning and she's having a few friends round later for film and homemade pizza - I'll be doing a big pizza production line!

Crochet is unforgiving and way harder to fix than knitting sophs Grin I tend toassume all crocheters have zen like levels of patience!

Happy Birthday to mini-linguist! 🎂

Crochet is unforgiving and way harder to fix than knitting

I have no idea about knitting but I find that crochet is very forgiving and easy to fix 😂

lucysmam · 26/08/2021 08:28

@sophs29 yep! I'm really happy with this one, now I've worked out where I went wrong with the cables - I think they're something to work on!

Happy 16th birthday to your dd lazy 🎉🎂 I hope she has a lovely day!

sophs29 · 26/08/2021 08:58

Haha @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack I'm with @SoupDragon and find it quite easy to fix mistakes etc..but I don't want to talk too soon 😬😂

I'm so glad you're enjoying them @lucysmam ☺️

Happy birthday to your DD @lazylinguist sounds like a lovely day planned! I love homemade pizza!
It's my mum and dads wedding anniversary today so I'll be there for the day ☺️ this is the card I made them from my DS's..my DP said 'what are you trying to say? They're elephants? 😂😭'

Oh that card is adorable, sophs! I've wondered about using my yarn skills to make cards before, but have never tried. And it only tends to occur to me tye day before I need the card! Grin

Oh my goodness that is too adorable sophs! 😍

I’ll believe that you both find crochet forgiving, maybe it saves the unforgiving bits for me Wink

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 26/08/2021 12:35

@lazylinguist

Happy Birthday to your teen!
I used to be terrified of dropping a stitch but then decided to do it on purpose, to practice.
Anything straightforward like garter stitch, knit & purl rows (straight needles) or ribbing or knit rows on circs (hats, socks) dropping a stitch is nothing now!
I'm still very scared of dropping one for more complicated stuff like increase, decrease, creating holes etc.
and if I screw up a sock heel I get so lost I just have to redo the whole thing.

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack, I agree with the others that crochet is soooo much easier to fix or even cheat. In fact crochet is just easier,🤣 a stitch slipping off the hook is never a problem and counting stitches is so much quicker too.

I always wonder if finding one or the other easier is to do with which one we learn to do first.

lazylinguist · 26/08/2021 13:04

Dropping a stitch on purpose Shock Grin
I'm just about ok with a dropped stitch if I'm using aran or chunky and biggish needles. If I'm using fine or fuzzy yarn it's a nightmare! I got MIL to sort out a mistake in my knitting once, and I was astonished and baffled at the confident, casual way she just pulled stitches off the needle, turning the work this way and that and working out what I'd done.

I sometimes think I ought to just have a permanently 'live' knitted square that I can test things out on, practise undoing bits etc!

Just got my lovecrafts order!! Like a kid at Xmas!!

www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/knitcraft/how-to-crochet-a-granny-square-blanket away to do this but it doesn't say what colour is A, B or C!

CrochetBug · 26/08/2021 14:14

@cookiemonster5 i love yarn delivery days Grin
In that pattern A is the blue/teal colour. B is the grey and C is cream.
It does say that in the pattern but they've missed the space between the letter and and colour name so it's easy to miss Hmm

Happy birthday mini Lazy! I love how when the dc are small we (well I did) tell them they can't get up super early even though its their birthday. Then when they are teens we are prodding them awake so we can celebrate Grin

MerylSqueak · 26/08/2021 15:10

What a celebratory day! Happy birthday Mini Linguist. Happy anniversary Mama and Papa Sophs (very cute elephants!) Happy yarn delivery @cookiemonster5 Smile

As I knew I didn't have anyone to fix my mistakes, when I decided to learn to knit I made myself undo every single mistake I spotted. I'm not bad now. Fuzzy wool is hard and so are complicated lace patterns. I'm very pro your idea of a square to practice @lazylinguist.

tizwozliz · 26/08/2021 15:18

Nice card @sophs29

I've done quite a few cards with a small crochet element. I have the card blanks now and a printer so easier than buying a card. I sent this to go with the crochet wedding figures

lucysmam · 26/08/2021 17:37

Oooh, the cards are lovely!

I'm up to puff stitches on my sock. They don't look very puffy to me 🤷‍♀️ I think that might be the coloured yarn I've picked though maybe.

lazylinguist · 26/08/2021 17:55

One of dd's friends who's come over for her birthday is learning to crochet! Dd told me she's stuck on how to turn and start the next row, so she brought it with her so I could show her how! Smile

@CrochetBug - yes, I dug ddout of bed at about 8:45 because I'd been up since 7 and couldn't wait for her to open her presents. Grin
