I think you increase every rs row (aka every other row) however many times for your size- which is 0 rows for most sizes.
Then every 4th row however many times for the size you are making.

And then increase every 6th row.

lazylinguist · 18/04/2021 10:01

Yes, what @CrochetBug said, I think. I must admit those instructions make my brain hurt a bit though!

I've just started the colourwork yoke on my jumper and am really liking the colour combo. I'd started off on dpns for the neck, so it was a big relief to move onto my circular - it felt like I might soon lose stitches off the end of the dpns!

@crochetbug and @lazylinguist my brain couldn't work out whether it meant no increase on the 4th a it was a 0 and do the increase on the 6th. The rest of the pattern I understood but that I couldn't work out as to me if its 0 it means don't do it and just knit the St St.

lucysmam · 18/04/2021 21:50

Just checking; the right side is looking at me when the yarn tail's on my left? I'm confusing myself tonight Confused

CrochetBug · 18/04/2021 22:11

@lucysmam yes.

Did anyone see CTM? Baby Christopher (I think that's what they called him) had a beautiful blanket. And Cyril jumper looked like some that have been on this/previous threads .

lazylinguist · 18/04/2021 22:22

Took me a while to work out what CTM stood for Grin. I've never seen it! I do really notice knitwear in tv programmes and films since learning to knit though. And on people irl of course. I always like looking at the jumpers in Harry Potter of course - there are so many good ones.

Thanks @CrochetBug, I gave it up not long after posting 🙄 I'll try again today.

lazylinguist · 19/04/2021 15:01

I'm going to bite the bullet and go to Northern Yarn's Zoom knitting group this evening! I'm going to feel a bit weird as I don't know who they all are, but hopefully it won't be too awkward .

Look at you, lazy, queen of web-based knitting groups! Enjoy! At least on zoom, it’s easy if you don’t know who everyone is because people have their name underneath the picture of them. The only ones you’ll struggle with are those who are using someone else’s device, usually called something like ‘Nigel’s iPad’.

lazylinguist · 19/04/2021 16:11

Grin I could end up in 3 online knitting groups if I go to the KAL Zoom too! I guess I'm just lucky that my only Zoom calls are for fun things like knitting and family gatherings, unlike so many people who are having to do endless virtual work meetings! Actually that's not quite true - I do teach a one-to-one German lesson to an adult learner once a week. But she's lovely and it's quite fun!

Are any of you ever not convinced an item will fit, despite measuring according to the pattern?

I started the sweater for myself in the small size, last night & frogged it in favour of the medium, that I've had a couple of hours at today.

It still looks really small though, even though going by the measurements it should be right Confused.

I'll measure me & it again tomorrow morning before I carry on but just thought I'd ask.

lazylinguist · 19/04/2021 22:06

I am utterly clueless about sizing, @lucysmam! I don't think my tension is very consistent from project to project and I find it really hard to decide which size to go for, what with positive/negative ease etc.

Ooh, how did it go lazy?

Lucysmam I'm a fully accredited gauge fanatic but have you checked your gague? ideally you'd wash your swatch to check but if you're not using superwash wool, alpaca or a lacy stitch you can generally get away without washing.

lazylinguist · 20/04/2021 08:36

It was nice, Flavia. It was 2 hours long, and I wondered if I'd find that a bit hard-going with a bunch of strangers, but it went surprisingly quickly! Some of them are clearly super experienced and talented and some do spinning and dyeing too. They were talking about someone locally who dyes yarn using all natural stuff like nettles and onion skins! One of the knitters in the group made these socks Shock. here

Oh they are gorgeous!! That sounds like it was really interesting Smile

I'm getting my vaccine today and it seems another step in the road to normal, I can't wait untill my local knit and natter starts back!

By the way, www.wonderwoolwales.co.uk/ is this weekend and there's a lot of talks on zoom. Some look quite fascinating. They're free but they ask you to make a donation to the Welsh air ambulance.

lucysmam · 20/04/2021 09:44

Flavia I'm just doing a couple of things then going to check my measurements, and measure the gague of what I've done so far.

It was close enough for me to be happy with before I started on the small size, but I figured I'd check everything before frogging again.

lucysmam · 20/04/2021 09:46

*gauge

sophs29 · 20/04/2021 10:26

Oh my @lazylinguist those socks! I wouldn't know whether to wear them or frame them! So glad you enjoyed it!

lazylinguist · 20/04/2021 10:58

I'm off to have my first dose of vaccine tomorrow Flavia. Hoping for no side effects. My dsis said she felt really rough for 24 hours after. Hope yours goes ok! I'll check out that link - sounds interesting.

Hmmm, well, my gauge is good - it's slightly taller than it should be but I wanted extra length anyway. I measured myself correctly too. But, my waist measures 28" & the small piece I've done so far measures 14.5 wide, which only gives 1" total ease & seams when the pattern states there's a "positive give of about 3" once completed.

If I'm working this out correctly, my piece therefore needed to be about 15.5" wide. I'm not sure how hard/easy it's going to be but I'm thinking about frogging right back to my foundation row again & adding the extra 5 stitches then adapting the rest to suit as I go.

lucysmam · 20/04/2021 11:03

Should have said - I'm guessing the waist was based on a 27" waist to have 3" positive give.

Maybe. Or maybe I'm overthinking again 🤷‍♀️

lucysmam · 20/04/2021 11:15

Sorry, thinking "out loud" but maybe someone will point out something I haven't thought of.

I think from another read of the pattern that I'll need to maybe add 6 extra sitches so that my neckline's even. I'm going to rip it & add the extra and see what happens.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 20/04/2021 11:32

How does your pattern give the sizes? Usually the ones I use give the garments finished size rather than body size?

lucysmam · 20/04/2021 11:40

They're finished measurements. But, if the finished waist should be 30", I'm still missing just over an inch even though my gauge matches their specified gauge.

I'm packing up to go to work for the mo, might have another bash at it later on. Or finish the bits I started for the dolls house for today. They weren't making my brain hurt Grin Confused

I'm really surprised that there's 3cm positive ease at the waist looking at the modelled photos, I would have thought it would be more like zero or negative ease so the top can billow out.

I'm officially jabbed 🥳 Didn't even feel it!
