Is it crazy to try and make a blanket using squares of crochet and knitting together?

Absolutely not. I've put together many blankets of mixed crochet and knitting.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 17/02/2021 10:14

@SoupDragon am I right in thinking you do the Woolly hugs? That uses knitted and crochet squares doesn’t it?

DustyOwl · 17/02/2021 10:17

Hi Soupdragon, that's great to hear. My mum is more confident than I am! We are also using a DK cotton, which seems to give me less places to his with mistakes!

Lazylinguist we are thinking of knitted and crocheted squares and sewing them together. That knitting pattern looks great.
I might even make my own knitted one as well. It might be just what I need to get back into using 2 needles again. (Although without my Mum's pressure to finish, the baby probably won't get my blanket until she's 18.

Yes. All made by loads of different people too so they are all different tensions (and sizes!) 😂

I'm just over halfway through one at the moment. I must must must get my arse in gear and finish it but I have no enthusiasms for anything at all right now.

lazylinguist · 17/02/2021 10:37

I know exactly what you mean. The sun is shining here today though, which always perks me up a bit!

I need help please. I am trying to knit a hat, using wool that's designed to be used on 6mm needles. However the pattern uses 8mm and 9mm circular needles. Reading the comments it says you can use dk wool but need to cast on more stitches to start. I've done so but the rounds I've done to me look too loose. I need to use 5mm and 6mm needles for it don't I?

InTheNightWeWillWish · 17/02/2021 10:49

I’m in the same boat and when I do work up enthusiasm for something I’m struggling with it holding my attention for longer than 5 minutes. Usually when I’d get like this, I’d book some leave and do nothing but I can’t face another day of doing nothing at the moment. I’d make it a crochet day instead but even crochet isn’t holding my attention Sad

lazylinguist · 17/02/2021 11:10

ScoobyGang7 - yes, I'd assume that the instruction telling you that you can use dk and cast on more stitches meant with the right size needles for the dk. Keeping the big needles and increasing the number of stitches would mean bigger as well as looser.

I have no enthusiasm either. Must be something in the air! On the plus side I've got a man here (ooo errr) fixing the water in the bathroom. We've had no cold water, and therefore no flushing toilet, for about 3 months now Hmm.

I loved the raised lines section of the CAL. Waffle stitch is one of my favourites and it's almost that. I wish my yarn delivery would hurry up so I can crack on with the CAL.

lazylinguist · 17/02/2021 11:17

Where were you up to in the CAL when you ran out of yarn, CrochetBug? I want to know if I'm going to catch up with you Grin. Even if I do, it won't be for long!

I was on the last row of 'popcorn 2'

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 17/02/2021 11:26

I got my goody bag of fibre delivered and I've got distracted by it since sleeves are my nemisis. They're so boring I may change back to the lace pattern Grin

So I'm spinning instead. I got one mini skein finished last night and I think I'll probably get another 12 from it in different colours.

Ooh - I'm not sure I knew you did spinning, Flavia! I've always liked the idea of having a go at it. Is it difficult?

Scoobygang7 · 17/02/2021 12:02

@lazylinguist thank you I thought so but thought I'd check here as you're all more experienced than me. Urgh now means I need to frog it a third time.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2021 12:32

Many thanks, @lazylinguist.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 17/02/2021 12:42

Not really lazy, there's a bit of a learning curve but if you use a woolly fibre like Jacob instead of a slippery one like Merino it's so much easier. I have a collection of drop spindles but my favourite is probably a 3d printed one I got from Cat and Sparrow, it's nice and light. You can make one with an old cd or fidget spinner and a bit of doweling too.

I got a mini electric wheel last Christmas and I love it too but I'm glad I could spin on drop spindles first.

lazylinguist · 17/02/2021 13:01

I just looked at a drop spindle video on YouTube 😍. I could watch that all day! It looked like it would be hard to keep the thickness even though!

Wow @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack that is so cool about the spinning! Also something I’ve been interested in for ages but never really investigated properly!

Nothing much to report here although I’m still following your CAL progress. Keep it up! I’m back on the baby clothes - now I’m approaching 30 everyone seems to be having babies! This is for a friend’s wee girl 😊

Scoobygang7 · 17/02/2021 17:10

That's so cute @Kate105

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 17/02/2021 17:22

I wanted to do it for ages too and I'm really glad I did, it's so fun so definitely give it a try when you get the chance! It just needs a bit of practice to get an even consistency and it really doesn't take long. And of course, you know you need another fibre related hobby Grin

That is very cute Kate!

sophs29 · 17/02/2021 17:24

@Kate105 that is absolutely stunning!!

petridishmystery · 17/02/2021 17:25

I got a drop spindle a couple of years ago but I couldn’t get it to work within the first five minutes so I gave up in disgust (I have the attention span of a gnat). Every now and again I come across it when I’m organising my stash and always mean to give it another go...

Nith · 17/02/2021 18:28

Coming in late - what's the CAL people are doing?

SoupDragon · 17/02/2021 19:15

It's this blanket...
