@Leaningtoweroflisa I love that bowl! I have so much clay in the house didn't even think to make my own! Love the little owl pun too Grin

Leaningtoweroflisa · 10/02/2021 21:21

Thank you sophs been watching the Throw down, so this effort was definitely better than the last one - wetting the clay, smoothing it, sanding it etc. Would love a wheel and kiln but to be honest I’d probably be shit at it (bad back, dodgy joints) so air drying clay it is.

I fear I may make more over half term as DS enjoyed making pinch pots and we also have a lot of clay! Please make one too - I used a plant pot as a former and it’s too small for 2 balls of wool... 😂

lazylinguist · 10/02/2021 21:39

My FIL is an amateur potter. He's a (reluctantly) retired. He has a super shed with a wheel (but no kiln).

@Leaningtoweroflisa that's a good idea, my DS would love to join in too!
Haha it's better than what I have been using -my DS1s plastic toy wheelbarrow..until he decides he wants to play with it and goes running around the house with my wool hanging from it Grin

Leaningtoweroflisa · 10/02/2021 21:55

Oh that is the dream! I would like a pottery shed, a potting shed, a knitting shed, a office shed... we have enough billy bookcases to form a library so that life goal is currently ticked. Until we move house again.

Need to sort through my calligraphy stuff and cross stitch stuff next week. Work is so stressful and I just cannot be arsed with the constant grind. Think I’ve definitely hit the COVID wall now.

Leaningtoweroflisa · 10/02/2021 21:58

sophs 😂 loving that image! Hopefully you don’t have to run after him shrieking - I would be shrieking oh no my jumper!

lucysmam · 10/02/2021 22:01

Oooh, I love the diy yarn bowl! Was it easy?

I don't have any clay (yet) but could probably be very easily persuaded to purchase some & have a go next week while we're on half term (I'm so ready for half term!)

I've gone back to the yo-blo-slipstitch, the sc wasn't quite tall enough for the same effect.

I'm going to start the bear tomorrow though; ready for a change of pattern!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 10/02/2021 22:18

leaning I love the yarn bowl. I keep seeing adverts on Facebook for clay kits and fancied it but didn’t want to make a vase or pot but a yarn bowl could be good.

I did bobbles and the first row of stacked waves. And I’ve got stacked waves wrong already. Can’t face frogging it tonight so I’ll frog it in the morning and try again tomorrow night. Evidently didn’t heed the warnings. Urgh.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/02/2021 22:23

That is lovely leaning!

Leaningtoweroflisa · 10/02/2021 22:33

Erm easy-ish? I saw a good tip for rolling it out flat between 2 layers baking paper and that was very successful (I’d rolled it out on a glass work surface, it stuck like buggery and scraping it off with a palette knife ruined the nice flat clay). Draped it over a plant pot covered in cling film, stamped the letters and creatures on, cut the twirly bit out and poked holes. It took about 48 hrs to dry. Then rubbed it a bit smoother with fine sandpaper before painting it.

So not that much effort or skill compared to throwing it on a wheel? But much cheaper than Etsy even with posh clay kit?

You could do it CAL colours, too!

sophs29 · 11/02/2021 07:30

Haha yes @Leaningtoweroflisa it's normally just me shouting 'no no no' haha and him thinking wtf mum give me my toy Grin

CrochetBug · 11/02/2021 07:46

I braved the cupboard (insomnia got the better of me) and think I've found a ball of the scheepjes I needed. I'm not 100% sure if it's DK, 4ply or baby Aran, but it feels and looks like the DK I've been using. (My invoices only show 2 balls that I bought and I've used them both so who knows). I guess if it's massively different it will show when I actually use it.

As an aside is Aran and baby Aran meant to be the same thicknes ? I made a cardigan with a mix of both and the baby Aran was definitely thinner, but I'm not sure if that's a brand difference.

orchidsonabudget · 11/02/2021 08:09

Hello
Thank you for the advice I have ordered the book. I looked into a beginners kit and it seemed very 💰💰but they did recommend bamboo needles and chunky wool. Does that sound right?

lazylinguist · 11/02/2021 08:28

Kits always seem to be expensive, @orchidsonabudget! And I never see why they would be any better or simpler than just following a beginner's pattern and using thr yarn and needles it recommends!

Is it the Knitty Gritty book you've bought? I found it really good as an intro to knitting. As for the needles and wool - some people prefer bamboo/wood to the more common coated metal ones. Bamboo and wood are less slippery, which is helpful for a beginner as it makes it harder to accidentally lose stitches off the needle.

What yarn thickness you'll need will depend on what you're making. The needle size needs to be appropriate to the thickness of yarn and vice versa. For example using a much thicker yarn than the pattern specifies would make the item bigger than it was meant to be. Using smaller needles will make the knitted fabric tighter and more rigid, whereas using bigger ones will make it looser, floppier and more holey iyswim.

But you don't need to worry about any of that for now. As a beginner, just use the needle size and yarn weight that the pattern says!

@tizwozliz I blame you for this purchase I had to make Grin

tizwozliz · 11/02/2021 14:40

Sorry! I'd advise to look into the difference between x-stitch and v-stitch before diving in to any that have mid round colour changes. I bought it specifically for the sloth pattern but ended up frogging an entire head because the colour changes looked rubbish with a v stitch.

sophs29 · 11/02/2021 19:14

Oh okay thank you so much @tizwozliz for the heads up!
I got this one mainly for the elephant but I can see me getting the first book too! I haven't looked through it properly yet but it's a lovely book and thicker than I thought!

lazylinguist · 11/02/2021 20:05

Looks like a fab book!

I'm still on the bloomin' bobbles on Part 3. I made a mistake just like with the last set, but at least this time I didn't have to undo much of the row to get back to it!

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 11/02/2021 20:11

Aaaarggghhh! I'm such an idiot! I found the mistake, went back, corrected it, carried on and started the next row, only to find there was another mistake further back near the beginning of the bobble row, so have had to frog back to there now! Angry

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 11/02/2021 20:30

Nope, it's worse than I thought. The reason my count was wrong was because of a mistake on the row before the bobbles. Dearie me.

OP posts:
CrochetBug · 11/02/2021 20:33

Oh no @lazylinguist you'll have no CAL left at this rate. Shock

sophs29 · 11/02/2021 20:38

Oh @lazylinguist how annoying!
I'm about to sit down and do some crochet, still on the ruddy under the arches! Last row though!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 11/02/2021 20:45

@lazylinguist well that escalated quickly! Hopefully you get under the arches sorted and then find your rhythm again. I’m hoping part 3 is just an anomaly and part four is going to be a bit easier going.

givemebooks · 11/02/2021 21:00

Evening all, just finished part 3, off to sew in the ends now and get cracking on the next part! Fingers crossed a better experience than the 3rd part!!

lucysmam · 11/02/2021 21:01

How frustrating lazylinguist :( Hopefully you're sorted now!

I'm just doing another row of the bricks on dd2's blanket. I'm not 100% sure I've joined the second ball of colour correctly but it seems secure enough so we'll see. I've left the ends uncut for now but have sewn them in fairly tightly (I think).
