No bother Grin I usually follow the sleeves use about a third as much as the body theory but it doesn't work when the sleeves are stocking stitch and the body is lace.

Unless I do the sleeves lace too actually. I did see someone had done a version of it like that... Thanks for being a sounding board, that might be it! And it would be nicer on the reverse too.

I'm awful at mental maths but I'm good at programming and tracing bugs and I think knitting is quite similar to that in a way.

lazylinguist · 10/02/2021 12:34

I think the Ann Budd sock book gave me a bit of insight into the mechamics of pattern-making, sizing, adapting for different yarn weights etc. The fact that the whole book is essentially based on doing the same basic pattern but with lots of variations helped me understand a bit more about how patterns work.

And the whole method of making a sock, especially turning the heel, made me see the pattern design almost like a feat of engineering or architecture - making a thread of yarn into a 3D object iyswim. Fascinating really!

InTheNight that's exactly my plan. If it works out then obviously that's "swag" Grin but if not, it's not hurt to find out!

Flavia I have no idea either but am looking forward to seeing the finished jumper :)

givemebooks · 10/02/2021 13:58

Just coming on yo say i have frogged the sacked waves bit of the CAL AGAIN my count must be out

I am fed up

lazylinguist · 10/02/2021 14:29

Oh no, givemebooks! It's so annoying when that happens. I've got Bobbles to do before I get to the Stacked Waves, but I'll be watching out for stitch count problems!

SoupDragon · 10/02/2021 14:31

I am behind with the CAL but have now finished part 2. Reading the posts about part 3 doesn't fill me with confidence!

That looks great,@SoupDragon! My only problem so far with Part 3 was when I didn't read the instructions properly!

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 10/02/2021 15:18

I often read the instructions and then do what I think they should say 😂 I'm not always right.

Mine too! think I had read half the instructions for row one and then half for row 2! Nightmare!! Tired brain i blame ha!!

Seem to have worked it out now and i am on row 6 of the waves now!

givemebooks · 10/02/2021 16:11

This was me my brain thought the waves should not be stacked on each other, clues in the name but my brain said no🤣🤣
SoupDragon · 10/02/2021 16:14

😂

RugsEverywhere · 10/02/2021 16:38

Was somebody after Scheepjes? I just bought lots of colpur crafter from black sheep wool

CrochetBug · 10/02/2021 16:47

Thanks @RugsEverywhere it was me looking for scheepjes. I'll have a look.

I'm on the last row of lattice stripe. I've definitely enjoyed part 3 the least so far.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 10/02/2021 16:59

spupdragon I find some of this pattern is doing what I think the pattern says, then looking at it and trying a different stitch. Trying to work out the top of the popcorn stitch was a case of doing half a dozen looking at it from a distance, undoing it and redoing the same half a dozen in a different stitch. Then doing whichever looked better. I’m not 100% sure I got the right stitch but it looks alright and the stitch count was right, so I’m counting that as a win.

I got an email notification for some wool that I wanted and is now back in stock. Great, except I can’t remember which project I wanted to use it for. Apparently my open tabs and bookmarks don’t help either. So clearly I either need to have a shorter future projects list or actually start a database to keep track Grin

CrochetBug · 10/02/2021 17:50

Part 3 finished. And the whole thing so far.

@InTheNightWeWillWish I have a wish list on WW that I've helpfully called "want". I have no idea what I want any of the things on the list for, or if I just like them but don't have a project in mind. I did start keeping a note book of what yarn I had and what it was for, plus things I wanted to make. But working full time and keeping up with it didn't happen. Maybe I'll start it up again while I'm not working.

I’ve also got the wish list on WW, which is titled ‘Ideas’. I started a note in my phone of projects but evidently I’ve not kept up with it... never realised crochet had so much admin!

Traybake for tea is in! Dogs walked and DH is having his guitar lesson (he’s also a lockdown cliche). I finished under the arches after work and I hope to be able to get Bobbles done and start stacked waves this evening. So when DH has finished his lesson, he can finish tea and I can squeeze in 10 more minutes of crochet before we eat.

CrochetBug · 10/02/2021 18:11

I think crochet is a full time job. Or at least it should be!

lazylinguist · 10/02/2021 18:28

CrochetBug - you're faster than the rest of us even with a dodgy wrist! Your CAL is looking great.

Not for the first time, I'm kicking myself for allowing myself to be dragged into threads elsewhere on MN rather than hanging out on here or actually getting on with my CAL! I find the education board bunfights a bit hard to resist Blush

InTheNightWeWillWish · 10/02/2021 18:36

crochetbug I need to get faster and neater if I want to keep my dogs in the life their accustomed too. Or you know, end up on at least minimum wage!

lazylinguist I keep being drawn into dog bunfights. I don’t have kids but have also been drawn into quite a few - why is this job a keyworker bunfights. This thread is definitely the least maddening thread.

orchidsonabudget · 10/02/2021 18:57

Hello.
How do I learn to knit?

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/02/2021 18:58

Those are lovely CrochetBug and SoupDragon!

I got sucked into a Brexit/NI/EU border bunfight a while ago, then I realised I had better things to be doing with my life and hid the thread Grin

I've been at the dentist today and I can still only feel half of my head. It's very odd and I just checked my email and found I ordered fibre for spinning not long afterwards and had genuinely forgotten until I saw the email Confused I only had numbing injections, I'm almost regretting I didn't get anything stronger for extra purchasing 😂

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/02/2021 19:08

Probably videos are the best since classes aren't on ATM orchids There's a blogger who does tutorials at different speeds and has a basics section verypink.com/category/techniques/basics/

You could see if you get on with her voice. We're having a knit a long after the crochet a long finishes that might be fun if you want to knit along with us.

You don't need anything expensive to start, you can use chopsticks or pencils and cheap wool or even string until you've got the hang of the knit and purl stitches and once you've done that you can go crazy on nice wool and needles and knit anything Smile

Scoobygang7 · 10/02/2021 19:37

Well all my order for my needles and markers and stuff has arrived. I've somehow managed to botch the hat again. Don't know how well I do I thought I'd remembered to change my knit counter. Started the row it looked wrong so pulled back. Started the knit 1 purl row that looked wrong too. So I've put it aside and am about to try and crochet a granny square for the first time.

Leaningtoweroflisa · 10/02/2021 20:02

Gosh, all the CAL blankets are coming along so well! Reading this thread is stil one of my stress busters. Cannot claim to be managing to do anything to my stash except increase it, then things are so slooooow.

Jumper starting to look a bit like a jumper.

Also went a bit mad, bought some air dry clay and tried making a yarn bowl as the Fantastic one I wanted on Etsy was too expensive when shipping added. It’s crap but not as bad as a first attempt.

Hello. How do I learn to knit?

Complete newbie? Ahhh you have a treat in store! I bought a total beginners' book called Knitty Gritty to start with, and watched lots of YouTube videos.
