Oh my days, those CAL pics are amazing!! You're all doing so well!!
Cracking colours @givemebooks !

How do you start the CAL @myshitisreal ? Do you just pick a pattern and put it up here? I'd love to get a knitting one going on here 🤩

lazylinguist · 03/02/2021 09:00

PlinkPlink - I didn't know whether to start with a Knit Along or a Crochet Along first, as I do both crafts. It would be great to have a KAL going too. For the CAL we just agreed a blanket would be good and then looked for good patterns with rows of different stitches to keep us interested, and decided we didn't want a granny squares blanket because some of us hate sewing stuff together.

In a way, if we do a KAL, my preference would be for something that isn't a blanket, as I'll have just done a big crochet one and did another in the first lockdown. But if the knitters on here want to do a blanket KAL I expect I'll join in (even though I'm itching to have a go at the Jennifer Steingass jumper pattern I've downloaded - @NiceCardigan yours looks absolutely beautiful!).

I have been slacking on my CAL as I need to pick the colours in daylight as the yellow tones in my lamp change them. That or I have to use the white light of my phone torch.

Scarves/cowls/shawls are also good for "a-longs" I think. Smaller and more manageable than a blanket but probably less complicated than clothing. Triangle shawls make good bandana type scarves.

PlinkPlink · 03/02/2021 09:36

I've never done a jumper before lazylinguist ... I'd be up for that! Have you got a linky so I can take a look?

lazylinguist · 03/02/2021 09:40

That's a great idea, SoupDragon. I made a couple of shawls a while back, both designed by Finicky Creations, made with sock yarn. I'd love to do a slightly chunkier one. For example I really like the varioys bigger triangular shawls by Two of Wands, like this one.

PlinkPlink - it's a jumper with a Fairisle yoke, so not the easiest jumper ti start with maybe! Very beautiful though. here

I have no idea what that even is 🤣

YouTube is my friend, gonna have a look now 😂

PlinkPlink · 03/02/2021 09:55

Does it involve double sided knitting... because I can do that (albeit when the kids aren't around, need to concentrate 😂)

lazylinguist · 03/02/2021 10:14

Do you mean knitting with a different yarn in each hand? If so, yes you can do Fairisle like that, but I just drop one yarn and pick up the other, because I find I'm actually slower trying to do it two-handed!

I've got 2 different colours in my RH say white and blue. So I knit with the white and purl with the blue. Reverse for the back.

I've just watched a video on a simplified version of Fair Isle and its pretty similar. Mind blown though 😂 I've been looking for something to perk up my knitting and this seems to be it!! I was feeling a bit stuck with where I was at.

Amazing.

I might try a scarf with it 🤔 or a shawl like previously mentioned?

lucysmam · 03/02/2021 11:22

I've given up trying to do the hands for the little heart. They were fiddly & frustrating me!

Is anyone any good at little rhymes to say "I'm thinking of you" to go with it?

sophs29 · 03/02/2021 11:26

Oh that's cute @lucysmam Smile
I like this one I've heard before
"When skies seem dark and times get tough and you don't know what to do,
Just know you have a friend right here to support and help you through." Thanks

lucysmam · 03/02/2021 11:36

I've never heard that sophs, it's nice. I'm going to find some pretty tissue paper out of my stash when I get home from work & pop into the Post Office to see if there's a nice card. Unusual for me but I don't have anything suitable in the card box.

Dd2 wants a Hufflepuff one now 🙄🤣 I will eventually make something I want to make for me!

CrochetBug · 03/02/2021 12:04

I cut my yarn after the larking around section!

Myshitisreal · 03/02/2021 12:29

Here's 2 poem attempts for heart hug 😳

Mam, we love and miss you loads.

here's a new little friend for your humble abode.

His name is Hector, and he's all heart.

He's a sign of our love, when we're all still apart.

When you see him, know we love you,

He's here to remind you how much we hug you

................

We think of you and send you love.

This little guy brings all the hugs.

He's special and cute, made just for you

So give him a squeeze and know we love you

If too soppy or you want a different message I can change 🥴

Sorry I tried my best.

Wonderful jumper upthread 🥰

lucysmam · 03/02/2021 15:33

Aw @Myshitisreal they're both lovely ❤ I'll use the second one if that's ok? He's going in the post tomorrow.

Everyone I know laughs at my stash of "maybe useful to have" things but I didn't need to buy a postbag for him...I already had one that I can cover the writing on with a big sticker 😏

Myshitisreal · 03/02/2021 15:49

Awww that's sweet. Even if you don't use it you've made me feel useful for the day 😘

bloodywhitecat · 03/02/2021 15:56

Hi, can I join in? I am currently knitting rainbow baby hats to raise money for bile duct cancer. It started as a bit of a joke after I knitted a couple for my current and ex foster babies and I posted a picture of what I had made on Facebook saying I was bored now the two hats were done and friends started to ask if they could buy one. I am two days in and on my third charity hat

CrochetBug · 03/02/2021 15:58

That hat is a thing of beauty!!!! I love rainbow things

bloodywhitecat · 03/02/2021 15:58

My charity hats are slightly different, they have wider stripes. I wanted my fosterling to have a very individual to him hat

PlinkPlink · 03/02/2021 16:42

@Nicecardigan Shock that is stunning!!!!
Is that Fair Isle then?

lucysmam · 03/02/2021 16:46

Ooh, I love the rainbow hats bloodywhitecats. Brightly coloured things talk to me, I'm a proper magpie Grin

I don't suppose any of you has a 50g ball of dk that gives an approx length? I've tried my scales and school's kitchen ones and neither are accurate enough to tell me how much 2m of the rainbow yarn I used for the heart weighs so I can't work out roughly how many yds/mtrs I have (ish, I know it won't be 100% accurate!)

Yellow heart is working up quickly - one of it's bumps is done & I'm half way through the second. Dd1 is still giggling at boob heart every time she walks past me 🙄🤣

sophs29 · 03/02/2021 16:58

@bloodywhitecat oh I love the hats!!

CrochetBug · 03/02/2021 17:04

@lucysmam what fibre? I think cotton is heavier than acrylic so you'll get less m per 50g.

My ball of Acrylic is 150m for 50g. (Schjeeps colour crafter for relevance)

Scoobygang7 · 03/02/2021 17:09

Hey everyone loving all the knits. I kinda fell off the other thread, as I had to frog the hat I started. I've only just picked it back up and am trying again. I just can't concentrate properly at the moment, both boys 24/7 and my nearly 3yr old is having more bad nights than good. Hoping I can finish it before the end of the month. Although it'll be random colours as I don't have enough of one single ball to do it all.
