Is it the attic24 CAL you are going to do lazylinguist?

No, a small bunch of us on this thread are going to do this one . You'd be very welcome to join if you feel like you're up to that yet. I think it has video tutorials.

Thanks @Myshitisreal your stuff is gorgeous too. Well everyone's is.

I've spent pretty much 3 days solid sitting under my weighted blanket and am feeling much more grounded as a result. It really is a miracle product!

I'm off to Aldi with Mum soon and then I'm aiming to finish something. Or at least start finishing something. Grin

sophs29 · 18/01/2021 12:34

Wow everyone is so clever on this thread!!

@lazylinguist I don't think mine has been dispatched either Sad I've printed off the pattern and just want to get started!

  • I only printed off the pages I needed, 65 pages seemed a bit extreme Grin
lazylinguist · 18/01/2021 16:57

Yay - my yarn has been dispatched!

OP posts:
lucysmam · 18/01/2021 17:26

Fingers crossed it's speedy lazylinguist; mine arrived the day after the despatch email which I thought was really good!

sophs29 · 18/01/2021 19:08

Mine hasn't @lazylinguist but like @lucysmam said, when I last ordered from them, my order arrived the day after they dispatched it!

bruffin · 18/01/2021 20:16

Ive been an idiot
I did my first russian join and was pleased with it , just realised i attached to the cast on tail instead Blush

itsme · 18/01/2021 20:25

Hope you don't mind me joining, I'm a beginner to crochet and struggling to make an actual square with a double stitch, I think I'm missing out some v stitches but I'm getting a dab hand at triangles 😂 I really want to make my friend a blanket for her baby- she's got 5 months left til she's due so maybe by then I'll manage a square!

lucysmam · 18/01/2021 20:28

@itsme have a look at Bella Coco on youtube - I followed her granny square tutorial one afternoon while dd2 watched Hocus Pocus; it was like a switch flipped & I "got it"!

bruffin · 18/01/2021 20:31

This gets worse i redid it and managed to join it to wrong bit again

InTheNightWeWillWish · 18/01/2021 20:51

lazylinguist my yarn order has been dispatched and is working its way to my local Hermes courier, so I’m expecting it tomorrow or Wednesday. I’ve got a couple of rows to write out for part one (I prefer to have the pattern written again when it says repeat row 2, at least while I’m still a beginner I find it much easier to pick up where I am if/when I have to undo my row). I’ve also planned out my colours, and which yarn is which colour and I’ve just got to check that makes sense when my yarns arrive but I’m fairly confident that 90% of them should work really well with the proceeding and following colour. So I think I’m as ready as I’ll ever be - just need the yarn now!

As I’ve been writing out patterns, I kept forgetting to ask DH to get me an A4 notebook. He’s ordered me 3 big A4 notebooks that arrived today, just for my crocheting (apparently one of my quirks is that for work I like A5 notebooks, so there’s millions of those around the house, but crocheting I need A4 Hmm).

I think I know how to do all the stitches in the first part but I’m finding the size of the CAL quite intimidating. I tried to start a few projects over the weekend having finished DH’s scarf but I kept scrapping them as I wasn’t happy. So I’m just going to either do twiddle mitts or granny squares until we start the CAL.

Thanks, I'll have a look tomorrow, when I've got dd settled with school work.

lazylinguist · 18/01/2021 21:29

bruffin - I don't even know what a Russian join is, so you're one up on me! 3rd time lucky eh?

InTheNightWeWillWish - wow, you sound like you're super organised for the CAL! I'm not too worried about the size or the stitches, because although I'm still a relatively new crocheter, I'm used to that from my first CAL blanket in the first lockdown. I haven't really worked out how I'm going to alternate my two colours yet though.

I quite like keeping a written log of WIPs with notes about what yarn I used, what went well or badly etc, but I don't write out patterns, I print them.

I've scrolled past this so many times on Pinterest & really like it. Not a scooby where I'd wear it but I'm very tempted to eventually have a go

That's very elegant, lucysmam !

I think it’s because my attempt at the baby blanket was such a bust, I don’t want to mess this one up! Plus with scrapping some projects over the weekend, I think I need this one to look really good or I’m going to be stuck doing scarves for all eternity.

There’s quite a few rows where the pattern calls for you to use the same yarn for two rows, so you might want to follow those but alternate every time it changes?

@InTheNightWeWillWish thank you for that I'm sure it will be helpful!
I absolutely love all the bright coloured blankets but as I'm using different shades of mint and grey I might just do it as an ombré effect as I go, but when my yarn finally gets here I'll try and work it out Hmm
Still hasn't been dispatched Sad I've refused to start any biggish projects so I'm fresh for the CAL - but have started to make a neighbour some bowl cosys for when your bowls are too hot/cold!

sophs29 · 19/01/2021 08:35

It's been dispatched! Grin

lazylinguist · 19/01/2021 08:50

That's helpful, InTheNightWeWillWish. You're right about the two rows in the same yarn thing, but I was wondering about doing wider stripes of each colour- maybe 4 or more rows.

When I made the Seaside Stashbuster blanket, I had fewer colours than the original pattern (6 instead of maybe 10), and I bought more balls of some colours than others because I wanted them to be the dominant colours. I didn't even make a plan of what order they'd go in, I just tried to change them as I I fancied, keeping the balance pretty even. I changed colour when the patterh said to, just keeing roughly the same distance between rows of the same colour iyswim.

Meant to say - lovely to welcome another newbie, itsme. Have you worked out what's going wrong with your squares yet? I started with squares as a total beginner too. It took me ages to get the hang of crocheting in rows. Maybe you could post a picture of your 'triangles' Grin and somebody might be able to spot what's going on?

Hello everyone.
I have just started to try to teach myself cross stitch this week! I have learnt how to do my slipknot and am practising chains that are not to messy! I'm left handed so I think I find it all a little more difficult as following videos etc is not always straight forward.
Lovely to find a thread where there is lots of enthusiasm and experience I can draw upon!

lazylinguist · 19/01/2021 10:12

Hi Teaplease29 ! Cross stitch, not crochet? I didn't know there were chains in cross stitch!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 19/01/2021 10:19

My DM is left handed but learned crochet from her DM and ended up crocheting in a mirror image of right handed crochet in her left hand. It's kind of handy though as she can just hand it over to anyone right-handed to continue with it.

I tried to learn from her but ended up using youTube Grin

SoupDragon · 19/01/2021 10:57

I'm right handed but did teach myself to crochet left handed once as a challenge. It was an odd feeling as the muscle memory was all wrong but I did manage basic crochet.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2021 10:58

I believe it's useful to be able to crochet with both hands if you want to make something with spiralled horns on (fairly niche!). A friend made a rams head once and struggled with the curly horns.
