Hello sorry i posted a long thing and it has not posted!!

Wondered if i can join you all :) after my DH asked what i wanted for xmas i decoded on some crochet bits, a small starter set and some mini wool later and i love it!

I have made a cushion and some mini among us figures, i am making my first blanket

I have never done anything like this before and as a newbie am finding it a bit overwhelming! I flicked through a crochet magazine but found it all for to advanced!!

Any recommendations for must haves/do's for beginners?

Also would love advice om where to get wool in lockdown? I feel like i want to feel the wool but thats not possible! So any advice on where to purchase nice wool would be great!

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 11:35

Hi @givemebooks ! Lots of us buy our yarn on Wool Warehouse - quick, reliable and send their yarn in nice organza bags. There are a couple of discount codes on these threads too, which get you 10% off. It's annoying not being able to buy and touch in person, but hey ho.

The overwhelmed stage doesn't last long! I'm sure we all remember looking at crochet and knitting patterns in bafflement, but you'll soon be able to make things you thought looked too advanced.

What kind of blanket are you making? We're about to start a Crochet Along one (once everyone has sourced their yarn).

I am reading all this thread back!!

sophs29 · 13/01/2021 11:45

Hello @givemebooks Smile
Your cushions are so bright and colourful! they'd cheer me up Grin
I taught myself to crochet and just would watch YouTube tutorials, I was just browsing Pinterest one night and saw something I'd like to make, I looked at the pattern and then typed the stitches needed in YouTube and taught myself that way! now I'm obsessed haha!

givemebooks · 13/01/2021 11:57

Hi @sophs29 the cushion is definitely crazy bright! Its going to be used in the garden during the summer!

Everything i have learnt so far has been via you tube, watch pause replay! I think thats why the magazines and patterns i just feel out of my depth!

I really need to learn the stich terms!!

I love the CAL idea and would love to join just not sure what to do!! I would love a big blanket for my living room we have grey, mustard and white theme

Any wool advice or CAL pattern advice from you all would be great!

Just thinking of doing a simple granny square with different designs blanket? It needs to be easy and fingers crossed the square designs i can watch you tube videos for! Just not sure of how much wool to order? Thinking like the picture?? Is this too simple for the CAL?

Love your cushion @givemebooks ! Very immaculately done for a beginner too!

Glad you're interested in doing the CAL. It is called A Spicier Life . It's designed to be a stash buster, or to be done in 14 colours (one 100g ball of each), but I'm doing mine in two colours because I'm boring. Grin

@lazylinguist wow i love that blanket! Not sure if i have the skills to be able to do it! But i am going to give it a go!!

I see the link shows some wool bundles i will have a look at the colours xx

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 12:33

The one we're doing is in rows rather than squares, because several of us hate sewing things together. Grin But if you've got a different blanket in mind, you can still crochet along with us of course and show us your progress!

givemebooks · 13/01/2021 12:39

I have just had a look through the pdf and i think it will be a brilliant challenge for me and i love the fact the have pictures of each stage!!

Sadly the wool bundles are all sold out but i am going to order similar colours from the wool warehouse as i really like the look of it and my niece is 3 and i think it would be a cute addition to her room!

Thank you for having me along I know no one at all who likes crochet so have no one to chat with!!

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 13:11

Brilliant, you're very welcome. Smile

The colour combo on that granny square blanket you attached is gorgeous @givemebooks I love it!
I love the idea of being able to choose which colour variants we'd like to use!
Id like to see what colours you'll choose!

And @lazylinguist I actually think just the two colours will make it look very smart and fresh!

sophs29 · 13/01/2021 13:47

Just looking at others who have done the spicier life blanket and this lady has done some beautiful ones but does her 'stats' mean she only used '611 grams' of wool?? or am I being thick Grin

Knit, Crochet and Natter into 2021
lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 15:11

Looks like it @sophs29 . Sorry, I mean it looks like she's saying she only used 611g, not it looks like you're being thick Grin. Maybe she scaled it down to make a smaller blanket? Or maybe she has magic yarn...

OP posts:
sophs29 · 13/01/2021 15:16

Hahaha @lazylinguist been doing some investigating and the lady who actually wrote the pattern (Sandra Paul) has a blog about it and said her mum was one of her pattern testers and out of the style craft DK kit she managed to get two full size blankets out of it Shock so I definitely didn't need to order so much yarn! haha oh well, I'll just make one for my own baby Grin

CrochetBug · 13/01/2021 15:25

I can never work out how much yarn to order. Even when the pattern tells you.
I made cardigans for 3 of my nieces, well I planned to. Each one needed 3 balls of blue, so I ordered 10 just to be on the safe side. I've made 2 cardigans and have 8 balls left Grin
My stash buster blanket may be mainly blue Wink

sophs29 · 13/01/2021 15:31

I'm the exact same @CrochetBug I always use less than a pattern says!
I'm currently making a baby cardigan and apparently needed nearly 3 balls of 100g, I've only got the sleeves to do and I'm still on the first ball Grin I always thought i was doing something wrong but they're always the right size at the end!

CrochetBug · 13/01/2021 15:36

These didn't come out the right size. I ended up making them about 2 sizes bigger than the girls are Hmm
Reading the reviews of the pattern it wasn't just me that had the issue. Lots of people said the sizing was off.

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 15:38

To leave the subject of the CAL for a minute, I've been thinking about what my next knitting project should be. I think having one knitting one and one crochet one on the go at all times is reasonable, no? I know some people have gazillions of WIPs, so 2 seems positively restrained. Grin

So I've decided to have a go at this . I won't start for a while though - I have my boring cowl to finish and I've only just bought a load of yarn for the CAL!

Hello! I am not a crochet fan, so no thanks to the blanket CAL, however my yarn stash from WW arrived this afternoon! Yay! Currently doing yet another jumper but once that’s out of the way I’m going to do some more baby knits. Why does everyone seem to have babies at the same time?!

givemebooks · 13/01/2021 16:04

Well thats me all in! Ha! Wool ordered for the CAL from the wool warehouse thanks again to who posted the code in the chat! I have gone fore the colours suggested as i like them and think it will go nice in my nieces room, if i mange to make it through!!

I also picked up some navy wool to edge my sons crazy bright blanket that i am on with now

Fingers crossed not long for delivery, when are people thinking of starting?

lazylinguist · 13/01/2021 16:21

As soon as everyone's got their yarn, I guess. Hope they deliver soon.

Why does everyone seem to have babies at the same time?!

It's been years since I've known anyone who's having a baby! I've literally never knitted a baby thing. I'll have to wait for grandchildren or great nieces and nephews!
