Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Congrats on your DS sophs! How lovely to have someone tiny and adorable to dress in tiny and adorable knitwear Grin

DH bought a little cupboard and organised my yarn in it for me when I was away once. Then we found carpet beetles in the house and everything woollen got put in plastic bags so it didn't all fit in the cupboard anymore. Lockdown has helped put a dent in it as I'm not buying any more unless I need it for something specific.

On the up side, once my stash is depleted I can buy new yarn and we got rid of the carpet beetles...

I'm clearing out and would be happy to send this to anyone who wants them.

Not sure on weights/brands but mostly DK I think.

Won't post until new year, message address if interested. I'll send to the first one who wants it.

Merry Christmas 🎅

That looks lovely, Wale90 - how kind, and Merry Christmas to you too. I'm sure someone will snap that up. I'll hang back and let the bright colour fans go for it!

Thank you so much @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack it's lovely, just so sad that he's growing so fast and outgrowing it all!

Winginit73 · 22/12/2020 13:00

This was on the mollie makes email/ might be useful to crochet fans: www.gathered.how/knitting-and-crochet/crochet/top-10-free-christmas-decoration-patterns/

lazylinguist · 22/12/2020 13:09

Wow - loads of great patterns on there, Winginit. I normally buy one new tree decoration each year, but I might start making one every year instead!

I love the flat Christmas trees on that link. Every year I plan to make a crochet ornament every day as a sort of advent calendar and every year I make only one 😂

tizwozliz · 22/12/2020 15:19

I sit and crochet stars all through Christmas, I now have way too many but I still make them. I had to get 3 trees this year so I had space for everything :-) (B&Q were selling real trees for a pound at the weekend)

CrochetBug · 22/12/2020 15:53

There's some lovely things on that link. Thank you @Winginit73. My mum keeps sending me links to Christmas things and suggesting I make them. I'm not sure she realises there's not that many days left Grin
I've got a list of Christmas things to make as long as my arm, and so far I've made half a Nativity set Grin

Shock Envy I wish I had 3 Christmas trees! Dh is not the biggest fan of Christmas, and he usually says "Do we really need to have a tree?" Hmm He's decided to throw himself into the Christmas spirit this year, but definitely not to the extent of 3 trees. Grin

Have finally finished work (I crawled across the finish line!) so plan to make something Christmasy when I’ve recovered my equilibrium. Thanks for the link @Winginit73.

Goandplay · 22/12/2020 22:40

Hope you don’t mind my crashing in to ask a question about my pattern.

What am I supposed to be doing where it says chain stitch 2-8? I’m crocheting a dolls head if that makes a difference.

I’ve attached a screen shot of the pattern.

Thank you.

@Goandplay

The number after the - is how many stitches were in that round. Slip stitches and chains aren't counted.

Goandplay · 22/12/2020 22:51

So I’m not actually crocheting any ‘chain’ stitches?

Goandplay · 22/12/2020 22:53

It seems as though I’m supposed to crochet something.

CrochetBug · 22/12/2020 22:56

Round 1.
Magic ring and chain 1 (not counted as a stitch.)
8sc into the ring.
Then close with a slip stitch to the first sc and chain 1.

Goandplay · 22/12/2020 23:03

Thank you.

I’m being annoying sorry. I’ve never seen
and ch 1 – 16 sts

Would you mind breaking down round 2 or 3 for me please?

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

CrochetBug · 22/12/2020 23:08

Its OK. Usually (IME) the final stitch count is put in brackets. Or the chain1 is listed ay the start of each round. Putting it after a dash makes it look like part if an instruction.

Round2.
2sc in each stitch.
Close with a sl stitch to 1st sc. Chain1.
(So should have a total of 16sc)

Round 3.
1sc, 2sc in next st, 1sc in next, 2sc in next etc.
Close with slst to 1st sc. Chain 1.
(Should have 24sc)

I hope that's clearer. Smile

Goandplay · 22/12/2020 23:09

Just had the light bulb moment! Thank you so much.

CrochetBug · 22/12/2020 23:17

No worries at all. Sometimes a pattern seems so confusing and then it clicks and you wonder why it didn't make sense the first time Grin

NowImmeagain · 23/12/2020 00:08

Ooh lovely Christmas decorations! I'm not sure I can crochet well enough, but I'll have a go, for next year.

lazylinguist · 23/12/2020 10:55

Grrrr! I am being such a muppet with my jumper! Finally got onto the patterned yoke bit and messed up twice on the first (incredibly simple) colour work row and had to undo it almost all the way back to the beginning! Hey ho. Sorted now.

OP posts:
WinterRobin · 23/12/2020 12:03

@Goandplay the chain stitch is to get the work to the right level for the next round. A lot of amigurumi patterns work in a continuous spiral and those don’t do the slip stitch and chain 1, but the pattern you are using is working each round as a row , joining to the first stitch in the round and then chaining one to get to the correct height for the next round. Hope that makes sense.

Kate105 · 23/12/2020 18:54

So here’s a new one... I’ve been asked to knit a tiny bobble hat to go on a gear stick for a Fiat 500! Apparently this is a thing now?!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 24/12/2020 09:15

Kate I suddenly feel very old Grin
