Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Welcome, CrochetToTheMoon!

Flavia - sounds cute! We've just been watching today's episode of The Mandalorian. I'd quite like to crochet a 'baby Yoda'!

Ok I've understood how to do the bit you helped me understand on my jumper. Now I've got another question.... When you're casting on more stitches mid-row (i.e
for my armhole bits), which cast-on method do you use? I don't want it to be too tight!

Do you remember a while ago a designer released this pattern and was made to withdraw it from sale from Disney after it went viral? www.boredpanda.com/crocheted-baby-yoda/

She’s released some new patterns like koalas and elephants which are completely not baby Yoda at all but have some extra instructions for modifications that can be done in green with different ears and a robe. My crochet toys always look sinister or I’d already have one made Grin

I usually use the cable cast on because it’s more stable than backwards loop but backwards loop has a bit more stretch...

lazylinguist · 18/12/2020 22:48

Thanks Flavia. I'll check out the 'koalas' and 'elephants' too! Grin

The "bear cub" is here. It has a variation for "baby rabbit ears" too. 😂

Thar baby Grogu is so cute.

tizwozliz · 19/12/2020 09:24

The OH threatened to learn so he could make a baby yoda, I don't think he has the patience. I made an AT-AT for him a few years back

lazylinguist · 19/12/2020 11:52

I made an AT-AT for him a few years back.

Shock Brilliant. Considering that all four of us in my house are big fans of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and all kinds of other stuff, I think I've been a bit remiss not to have been filling the house with crocheted characters. Our newly-decorated 'den of geek' study could definitely do with some!

I'm not actually a star wars fan, I've only ever seen bits of the first film. I first got into crochet when I was working away and needed a portable hobby and niece and nephew were very keen on Pokemon. I've done lots of character stuff for them - Harry Potter, Super Mario, Pokemon, Among us

Posted too soon, Harry and Hermione were free patterns I think. If you're interested I can dig out a link

Argh! I'm going to have to rip back my jumper to the point before I cast on more stitches for the armholes. My stitch count went wrong and I've somehow got some little holes. Confused. I HATE ripping back! I'm going to do that 'lifeline' thing and insert a needle first - I'm terrified of trying to deal with live stitches off the needle!

Oh no lazy! Though if it's any consolation drops Nepal is so sticky it doesn't unravel easily so it shouldn't get away from you...

Those are brilliant tiz!

lazylinguist · 21/12/2020 08:26

Well, I've manged to rip back the last few rows - phew! Then I re-cast-on the extra 51 stitches for one armhole.... before remembering that I was still on the smaller needles I'd used for the lifeline so that I didn't lose stitches Hmm. So had to rip those out again.

What a nightmare @lazylinguist! That’s the worst thing about knitting in the round- you get into such a nice rhythm and then you’re completely thrown when you have to switch to back-and-forth!

I’m currently grappling with this but on a much smaller scale with my handwarmers... forgot all about the need for a thumb hole. Kind of essential, some might say!

lazylinguist · 21/12/2020 08:50

Yes, thumb hole would be useful! Grin
It wasn't so much the knitting back and forth that threw me off, it was the cast-on stitches. I think they sat a bit closer together than normal and I may have knitted two together by accident a couple of times. I thought I could tweak the stitch count by increasing by one, but I kept counting and coming to the wrong number! It doesn't help that my grey mix Drops Nepal is dark coloured and a bit fuzzier than the non-mix colours. I'll have to go slowly and carefully when I try again today!

Pretty colours, sophs29! What are you making with it?

OP posts:
sophs29 · 21/12/2020 13:33

Thank you!
When I had my second DS 7weeks ago, my MIL's friends made a blanket for him and another made a cardigan and now they've both just had baby girls born into there families! So the lilac and rose is for baby jumpers/cardigans and the grey and mustard is just because I liked them haha!

tizwozliz · 21/12/2020 18:29

I'm trying to decide if I have time to make a couple of these before Christmas day so i have another gift for my mum

I decided to 'tidy' my yarn cupboard. BAD IDEA. It looked like a yarn shop exploded in my lounge. So I gave up Grin Its all back in the cupboard, although in less boxes than it was before Hmm

lazylinguist · 21/12/2020 19:31

They are lovely, tizwozliz!

CrochetBug Grin. I need a yarn cupboard. At the moment I only have a yarn box, but since I started this thread, my stash has grown too big for it. I like sorting through my yarn though - plenty of squishing and thinking about what I could make with it.

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 21/12/2020 19:32

Actually, stuff that. What I actually want is a yarn room wing house.

OP posts:
CrochetBug · 21/12/2020 20:11

I might need another yarn cupboard if I'm not careful Grin. I'm hoping to turn my other understair cupboard into a general craft cupboard. At the moment its full of junk. And I can't get into it because there's another cupboard blocking the door.

Am aware I'm making it sound like I have a huge house. I don't. Its a 2 up 2 down terrace Grin I need a bigger house or less hobbies
