Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

and rd...

relax into it, my friend

you know you have a problem when you get excited in charity shops that the big mens jumpers are not just in pale (food-colourig -dyeable) shades but also have been sewn in the round and are thus very easy to frog...

or when they bring out a new size of BBQ doweling...

so you are ok for a bit, I think...

housemum · 27/01/2007 16:01

Dropped off the thread there - thought I'd pop in and say hello again - sleeve is coming along, we may have a carid in the not-to-distant future!

kikidee · 30/01/2007 18:36

This has gone quiet, where are all the knitters? I have finished my first baby hat and I have almost reached the heel of my first sock following my class last week. At the first class we learned how to knit in the round and our homework was to knit 70 rounds to the start of the heel. I have whizzed through it as I am finding it strangely addictive. I'm knitting with one of the Opal yarns and I love seeing how it's turning out. Only slight snag is that I'm knitting inside out but I don't think that's a huge problem and I think the class teacher will be able to help me reverse it before I turn the heel. The wool seems a bit scratchy though - does anyone have any recommendations for something a bit more luxurious knitted on a 2.5mm needle?

I'm just waiting for my set of larger dpns to be delivered from Get Knitted so I can get started on the baby socks. I think socks could be the way forward!

tamum · 30/01/2007 18:39

Hello Yes, I mistakenly bought several balls of Opal yarn from GetKnitted and I really don't like it, to knit with or when it's knitted. There's some lovely alpaca on there that Pruni and I have both bought, called Hummingbird, but that needs bigger dpns. I love Lorna's Laces, but that's quite expensive.

I am just finishing a baby jacket and will do a hat to match, but I am in the middle of another Noni bag and a cardigan for me. Well, two cardigans actually. Arrgh.

kikidee · 30/01/2007 18:43

Hi Tamum. Thanks for the alpaca recommendation. My problem is that the pattern I have is the free one for Opal and it's 2.5mm needles. I think I'll have a look at the Debbie Bliss cashmere and see if that would do. Thing is though, I don't think it would be half as much fun knitting the socks in a plain colour. I am loving seeing how my stripes develop. It's really portable as well as the needles are so tiny.

tamum · 30/01/2007 18:48

I got a different free pattern with the Hummingbird, with the right tension- it might be worth emailing them and seeing if they'd still include it?

suedonim · 30/01/2007 18:49

I've finished one baby sweater and done a sleeve for the next one. But I've been waylaid by some cross-stitch for the moment. No doubt I'll get back to the baby stuff!

kikidee · 30/01/2007 18:53

here's my wool

Tamum, I'll investigate the Hummingbird. DB cashmere is 5mm needles.

tamum · 30/01/2007 18:55

Here it is, and still says a free pattern

Suedonim, you traitor you

LittleSarah · 30/01/2007 18:59

Hey knitters, I am back in business, well in the knitting business.

I have found the pattern I lost for my daughter's stripey cardi (have done, the back and half of front) so have restarted that and am making these little fingerless handwarmer things.

One thing I could use help on. I did try to knit these little fairy cakes recently. Exactly as they sound! Anyway I had to use 4/5 double pointed needles, which I vaguely recall using in the past. However as soon as I started I felt it wasn't going to work, and it didn't. The needles were a normal length I think but there was only about 50 odd stitches, far too few to go round IYKWIM. If anyone does know what I mean and has any tips for working with dpd needles I'd most appreciate it. Especially as I was going to try some socks soon and they are wanted then too!

kikidee · 30/01/2007 19:20

Thanks Tamum. The colours are lovely and it looks really soft. If I can get this first pair finished successfully then I will try the Hummingbird. Although, new baby arrives in approx 6 weeks so I think I might be about to find myself a bit short of knitting time!

suedonim · 30/01/2007 19:22

Tamum! I'll be back to knitting when I watch the rest of my Desperate Housewives DVD's. I've finally discovered a pastime where I don't need my reading glasses - watching telly and knitting at the same time!

Absolutely not, Fio! They're for...

my nephew and his dw, who are expecting twins. They already have a 3yo and 2yo so are going to be rather busy!

My nephew is busy converting their attic so they have somewhere to store all their babies.

florenceuk · 31/01/2007 15:16

have given up on lacey scarf for the meantime as misread pattern and will have to rip out lots - very depressing. I think I will look for a slightly simpler lace pattern. Sidetracked into knitting a pair of fingerless gloves in the most gorgeous wool (only one ball of each so cheap!) - Rowan Kidsilk Haze and RYC baby alpaca. It's so soft, I keep admiring them - and the fuzziness seems to hide all the imperfections.

tamum · 31/01/2007 18:31

They sound lovely florenceuk.

I have been looking at the photos of the opening of the GetKnitted shop and am green with

blueamema · 31/01/2007 21:28

hello knitting circle! am not a knitter myself, have tried but i'm much better on the sewing machine!!

Anyway I have been setting up my own website recently and have been looking round for inspirational sites and came across this one....

look at this

Instantly I thought wow, how different... and then when I saw your thread and I though I would pass my findings on.

You may or maynot like it? But I just thought they looked fab! (but as I say i'm a non knitter, so what do i know!!)
But there are free patterns on there and I know how much us crafters enjoy a freebie from time to time!!

Tatties · 31/01/2007 22:05
