Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

twig...um...ok basically intrasia is for areas too big to have great strands of rogue wool crossing over the back. fairisle is for when you can get away with just twisting.

so if you were changing colour for less than 4 or so stitches-fairisle.

more and you probably should be using separate balls. which is intrasia. i think.

though i am lazy and strand a lot more stitches than that at times.

a shed full, gow?

how do you keep the moths out?

welcome

ps tick will get book off to you as soon as i find it. i will have a look, but suspect it is one of those things that will turn up in own time....i think i have your address somewhere obvious but if not will mail you.

Tatties · 13/01/2007 21:40

Thanks Filly

So, does anybody crochet too? Or does one not mention the c word on a knitting thread?

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 07:16

i want to crochet but am scared

actually i dont have the time for the learning curve. i suspect I need a morning, say, to get my head round the basics...but I don't have that w/o kids

sooon though...when dd starts sleeping...soon...

oh tatties-thats a good idea btw. did you use a specific pattern? or is it basically a bell shape?

SueW · 14/01/2007 07:44

filly you would pick up crochrt v quickly I am sure. I learnt on a knitting workshop LOL but I didn't practise enough afterwards and it's all a bit hazy now.

Our localyarn shop runs beginners' crochet workshops but they always book up really quickly. And I'm not sure that's the best way. For me learning to knit socks, it was great being able to pop round to see my mum every time I got to a new bit I had problems with iyswim. Unlike dressmaking, there are long periods in knitting/crochet where the work is quite repetitve but needs doing, aren't there?

Am from N Wales fillyjonk, from a family of knitters, grew up with the click clack. Of course I rebelled and turned against handicrafts of any kind only to discover the pleasure and peace very recently. I only hope it's not too late for me....

ah dressmaking is my other thing I am wanting to do. have a nice book with polka dots on it. Sew easy? or something? has lots of nice things like hot water bottle covers. Have converted some of the stuff to knitting patterns but need to get my head round sewing, have big mental block about it.

basically, I can knit while also bf and/or (yes, sometimes and...) studying at the same time.

that is the only way I get to knit.

on my recent foray into sewing (waldorf / voodoo doll)...I was shocked at how much I had to look at what I was sewing. All the time, bascially.

And my sewing machine is cheap and bits keep falling off.

hmm...I need time really

I really must learn crochet though. I have lined up some nice crochet hooks here and have a cunning plan to rip off that cath kidston afghan (can't find it, retailed at about £200 for lots of acrylic though)

ffs, why did I do latin instead of home economics?

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 10:20

aviatric I have a good book on homeschooling which argues that it is imperative for kids to see handicrafts in action for various reasons to do with proper development and so on

oh am pondering email btw.

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 13:43

tatties, that is marvellous.

I want one

and soon I shall have one, I think

tamum · 14/01/2007 16:04

fillyjonk, you should have a little sabbatical in Edinburgh- David Drummond near Haymarket is the most wonderful place to buy sewing machines. I rang them before I went to see if they had the one I thought I wanted in stock, and they took me in and let me try 4 or 5 they had ready because they were similar to the one I wanted but cheaper or better for different reasons. The shop owner made me a cup of coffee while I tried them out, with tuition. They also have me a voucher for two hours of free tuition once I'd got used to the machine, too. I haven't needed it because it's so easy to use mind you. And you could visit Handknit while you're here.....

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 16:07

cardiff doesnt have a wool shop

it doesn't have a sewing machine shop

it doesn't even have a fishmongers

should've done that phd....

I taught myself to crochet over the Christmas holidays, in the middle of the night (only interruption-free time). It is very satisfying and there is less worry about losing stitches (ds2 ran into me yesterday whilst I was knitting and knocked off 3 stitches - I had to undo 2 rows to find them again!)

Fillyjonk · 14/01/2007 18:41

twig

don't worry

just do what you're doing

it really really doesnt matter

ps yes intrasia needs 2+ balls of wool.

kikidee · 14/01/2007 18:50

Tatties - your cafetiere cosy is inspired!

Re crochet - I recently tried to learn. I bought the Happy Hooker book and had a Masterclass from my mum but I just could not do it. My mum was lovely and very patient but it just wasn't for me.
