Feel free to join in and ask about materials, or share photos of the pictures you're working on, or just have a chat! It might send you broke, but it's a fabulous hobby Grin

Oops got distracted, I meant to say that I love your big one blue! Pictures always take me weeks to colour because my hand gets sore.

And very happy to see you both got Enchanted Forest bbqs and green, it's the best Smile

My lost ocean should be here today Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 21/10/2015 11:47

Thanks Owl.

slev I don't go around shouting about colouring exactly, but DH and DSs, and some of my friends are aware of it. I used to do a lot of colouring at uni and immediately afterwards, when it wasn't a "thing", to de-stress, so friends from that era probably know. I would feel a bit weird colouring in a public place, although someone was doing so at the swimming pool a few weeks ago, waiting to pick their DS up from his lesson.

TheoriginalLEM · 21/10/2015 12:02

Ive just started doing this - but i think i NEED pencils!

I have animorphia and ive buggered up a few pictures with pens, i just dont think im very good at it :(

OwlAtEase · 21/10/2015 13:11

LEM you definitely need pencils. I'm not great with pens either. They're just kind of heavier, and it's harder to get even colour. I think pencils are a bit less daunting. You can just start colouring really lightly and build it up and see how you go Smile

I'm actually quite impressed by your goat, there's no way I'd be brave enough to do my own drawings. Your owl is great. There's a whole range of pencils you could try. If you're in the U.K, I think quite a few posters have been happy with some cheap ones from WHSmith. A bit more mid-range would be the Staedtler Ergosoft. Or you could go completely bonkers like I did and buy the Faber Castell Polychromos, which are fabulous but cost about as much as a small car Grin

I have finished another one. I tried to do rainbow colours but i am not too sure my indigo and violet bits are quite right. They are tricky colours to identify.

Finished my chest (so to speak!). And my Christmas present of the polychromos has arrived - they'd better live up to expectations because I'm getting very bored of how hard I have to press to get vivid colours from my current set. They may blend well, but they're quite insipid unless you go over and over the same bit.

Although sadly, my copy of Lost Ocean has also arrived and it looks so cheap compared with the other two books by the same author. Has anyone tried it? I'm saving it for Christmas, so no idea how it colours, but the paper isn't anywhere near as nice - it looks so inferior compared to the others. I may order Secret Garden instead (or more likely, as well!) but feeling very cheated right now!

Sticking with Enchanted Forest for now, I'm doing the frog next. Although I like cashew's rainbow - am tempted to try something similar, but not sure I have enough of a colour spectrum. cashew how many pencils have you got? I've got 24 - can I manage it with that?

I have 60 pencils and used 3 of each shade to achieve that picture. Maybe if you have another set you can mix them? I used a lilac colour from a different set.

GreenSand · 27/10/2015 09:44

Hello, since I love seeing all your efforts, I thought I'd add my amateur effort. I'm not convinced with the colours, but since I started with 12 kids pencils, I didn't have much choice!!! My set of 24 pencils arrived in time for the leaves. I'm going to need some more greens, aren't I???

I've just bought a new book. It's called the magical christmas and it's lovely! Lots of swirly christmas patterns and Ive had a very happy couple of days with it :-)

slev · 01/11/2015 23:41

Question for those of you with polychromos. How are you blending then? I'm using the white pencil with my cheapo Tesco set - do I do the same with posh pencils, or do you need a proper blending pencil (note, I have no idea what this is, but I've heard speak of such a thing!)

Very frustrating day in the slev house today - DS (5) decided to colour with me, so that's more pages missing from my book. He's already chosen "his" pages from Lost Ocean.- seems this had turned into a joint present!

I wouldn't mind, but he's not even doing it properly! The last one he did was the underwater one, which he did in three colours - midnight zone, twilight zone and the other zone I can't remember - Octonauts, I blame you. So I got three stripes of varying shades of blue. And none of the detail. It's very upsetting!

OwlAtEase · 05/11/2015 11:32

Lovely pics Green and Cashew!

Mad, your Christmas book sounds amazing. I'd love to see a picture from it!

Slev I really love your shading on the chest. How are you going with the Polychromos? I've asked DH for a proper blending pencil for my birthday, but in the meantime I've just been layering colours, sometimes using a tissue to smudge them together. I'm really surprised by what you said about Lost Ocean. I just won a copy in a colouring competition and the quality of the pages is as good as Enchanted Forest, very thick and white. I haven't coloured on it yet but it looks like the pens wouldn't bleed. It's much better than my copy of Secret Garden! I wonder why yours seems to have worse paper? That's really odd.

PeaceOfWildThings · 05/11/2015 11:45

If you give your DC watercolour pencils, slev when they have finished, you could use a small wet brush to lift colour off the fine details.

slev · 11/11/2015 15:31

I haven't actually tried the Polychromos yet, they're sitting on a shelf tempting me, but they're my Christmas present!

Maybe I'm being overly pessimistic about Lost Ocean - I think the paper's just a lot whiter than Enchanted Forest, so it looks a bit cheaper. In fairness, that's to go alongside the pencils for Christmas, so maybe it colours quite nicely - who knows? Massively fiddly pictures though - not sure how easy some of those will be to colour!

Thanks for the tip about the watercolour pencils, maybe I'll try that. I don't mind in a way, because it's quite nice that he does want to sit down and colour - it's more that he nicks pages I wanted to colour in!

And more pictures please people - let's get a bit more inspiration! I'm still doing the frog, although a good couple of evenings this week and I hope to have finished it (DH is out, so I reckon glass of wine and a bit of colouring for me!).

BlueEyeshadow · 16/11/2015 16:54

Just posting to mark my place again. We just moved house so haven't had much time for anything fun lately!

PollyannaWhittier · 20/11/2015 07:12

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 20/11/2015 20:47

you what?! how much does it cost then? crap, ive probably missed it havent i :(

theconstantvacuumer · 23/11/2015 12:44

Hi colouring peeps, I've just noticed that Amazon are doing a lightning deal on 120 Polychromos colour pencils at 5.30 tonight Smile I don't know what the price will be yet.

GeekyQueen · 23/11/2015 14:49

Bollocks, I missed the fine liners at 12.30. I doubt the 120 tin of polychromos will go low enough for me to justify, gutted I missed the tin of 60. What did they go down to?

PollyannaWhittier · 23/11/2015 22:18

The tin of 60 went down to about £45 iirc. Still too expensive for me Sad

Thecatknowsshesboss · 25/11/2015 10:59

Polychromos box of 60 in lightning deal at 5pm again.

GeekyQueen · 25/11/2015 14:57

Fingers crossed for a good price as these might be my. Christmas present from DH 🎁

theconstantvacuumer · 25/11/2015 16:56
