Talking of fineliners, I found a second lot of them left behind by Art student son! Only a small set but different colours to the first. If only he'd left behind the watercolour pencils set I bought him a couple of years ago... I still haven't cracked open the Derwent watercolour set got recently as by the time I've got to colouring, this week, it's been late at night and am too tired to do anything other than use ordinary coloured pencils/fineliners. As a beginner, am finding the fineliners are great for doing things like tiny leaves and really detailed stuff, but the pencils are better for larger areas, shading, and piling on different colours. Last night I did go over a big fat tree that takes up half the picture, with an Inktense pencil, though, so will add water today and let that dry, and see how it looks...

Still only have 'Tangle Wood'. It's my first book so nothing to compare it with, but the fineliners seem fine on it and I'm happy with the paper quality. For anyone thinking about getting that book!

TyrionLannistersShadow · 11/09/2015 09:09

Can I join please Smile. I only recently got into colouring and only have one book which isn't great. I want to order another on amazon and also some decent pencils. I have a set of Faber Castell which are rubbish to be frank, constantly breaking, what would the more experienced colourists here recommend? Thanks!

OwlAtEase · 11/09/2015 10:00

Joffrey I'm so curious about the Inktense pencil, I've seen them recommended but I've never used them. I'd love to see what your tree looks like, if you don't mind sharing a picture!

Welcome Tyrion, there appears to be some crossover with colouring in as a hobby, and watching GoT Grin. I can recommend the Enchanted Forest book. I'm not sure which Faber Castell pencils you're using but guessing not Polychromos? I've not had any problems with them breaking, they are fabulous (but expensive). Quite a few posters on our previous thread also liked the Staedtler Ergosoft pencils. And I think I've seen people recommend Derwent Coloursoft. Don't get the Derwent Artist ones, they're way too soft and waxy and don't give any sort of vibrant colour.

Thanks owl no not Polychromos, they were just cheapo ones I bought on hols, probably more suited to kids! Going to Google those ones and the Staedler ones. Laughing at the GoT link , I think it's the fantasy aspect, I love reading fantasy books too.

FeelingSmurfy · 12/09/2015 11:26

Joffrey I am not saying how long I spent searching Wink but I found them! Hope these are the sort of things you are looking for

JoffreyBaratheon · 12/09/2015 16:15

Oh Smurfy (you enabler) those are just what I had in mind! Thanks! Didn't cross my mind to look on Etsy. I also like the unicorn.... And of course xmas means I can use sparkly pens, right?

FeelingSmurfy · 12/09/2015 17:47

I wouldn't have either, its a page someone added me to on Facebook and she now sells through etsy

I'm glad you like them Smile worth the searching last night!

PetraDelphiki · 12/09/2015 22:35

Cani throw in a recommendation for the koh-I-noor progresso solid colour pencils - was working with these tonight and much better coverage than my albrecht durer Faber castell set (autocorrect hates this whole paragraph).

However big discussions did ensue with dd(8) about the correct order of the colors!!!

SteamPunkGoth · 12/09/2015 22:38

I love colouring so shall join if you don't mind.

Ha! Grin. I haven't heard of those pencils Petra, just googled them and they look interesting!

Koh-i-noor also do a fabulous set of multicoloured pencils...

www.pencils.jp/product/812 I found them on Ebay shipping from Poland pretty cheaply!

sidsgranny · 16/09/2015 17:58

Can I join too? Have just bought a book and some very cheap pens which I'm not to keen on (the pens not the book!). Looking at this thread most of you seem to be using pencils instead of pens? Will look at some of the recommendations but does anyone have a favourite, not too expensive, set of pens they love?

BlueEyeshadow · 16/09/2015 19:47

I saw Derwent Inktense pencils in Clas Ohlsen today. Does anybody have any experience of them? I like soft pencils, but the idea of vibrant colours is appealing.

JoffreyBaratheon · 16/09/2015 22:35

I will try and photo tomorrow but today I used a little test of Inktense and compared it to Derwent watercolour pencils and the Inktense was noticeably stronger and looked exactly like ink. Really loved it. I have a set of 12 blocks but bought a couple of pencils in open stock at a local Art shop and love it so much am going to get another set of pencils as they're easier to use for colouring. I applied it dry then used a paintbrush.

OwlAtEase · 17/09/2015 02:26

Hello sidsgranny, I think the most popular pens on the previous thread were the Staedtler triplus fineliners. I bought them because they were recommended by the artist who does the Enchanted Forest and Secret Garden books. I don't think they were too expensive from memory!

Still not photo'd the Inktense (husband went to work with my phone in his pocket!) Will try and remember over the weekend. It's my birthday next week and I am angling for the Inktense pencils!

Got the Fairyland book in The Works, last week. Amazon has it up for pre-order but it's already in The Works.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 19/09/2015 00:03

Can I join in please? My pencils are in a beautiful tin and were the ones I used for my final art exams in school 26 years ago Shock My 8 yr old has constantly got his beady eye on them ( told him he will get them in the will).

I have a couple of adult colouring books and my dream is to make the time to colour in my books while he simultaneously uses my pencils to colour in his books (I suspect based on another DS having dyspraxia that he has fine motor skill issues too). I'd like us to have a family / communal colouring in fest! Will come back with images of the fruits of our labours if successful!

OwlAtEase · 19/09/2015 13:13

Pinkrosa there's a new one called Lost Ocean coming out next month too - so even more hard decisions to make about what to buy! I didn't realise you were in NZ, I'm in Australia and it's really big here too, I keep seeing displays everywhere.

Martin, welcome to our thread! DD is only 2 but when she's a little older we'll be having family colouring in fests too! I already get together and colour with my MIL and SIL. It's so relaxing, and a lovely way to socialise Smile

Martin my oldest son (25) is dyspraxic and he got a colouring book and some pencils before I did!

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 19/09/2015 17:37

Thank you Owl!

That's lovely and encouraging to hear Joffrey thanks!

JoffreyBaratheon · 22/09/2015 19:20

Here's Inktense (the purple and darker brown) alongside Derwent watercolour pencils (lighter brown and blue). It can go as strong and intense as you want it. Not a v good picture but the best I could get with my dodgy phone and poor light!

Since I've now played around a bit with the Inktense, I can also report once it's dry it's permanent - so you can then go over that part of your pic with something else and no bleeding of colour.

Not sure if you can tell from this pic but it defiinitely has a more inky look than the watercolours. To the point that I won't buy any more inks for drawing/colouring (I'd just given my last lot away to my son) as it's much easier to work with pencils....

Ooh, that's nice, Joffrey.
