Hi all! I posted in chat. I really want to start adult colouring in but have no idea where to buy the books! Or any decent pens?! Please help! Haha

Phoenix0x0 · 15/10/2015 11:40

Most supermarkets sell them and so does WHShiths....the advantage is that you can look through to see which ones you prefer and then buy it cheaper online.

velmadinkly · 15/10/2015 21:27

Hi all, I've been wanting an adult colouring book for a while, but everyone I found had too intricate pictures, which made me feel are anxious rather than relaxed when I was just flicking through the book Confused I then found in The Range "the art if mindfulness. Relaxed and focused colouring". The pictures aren't as intricate and has larger areas for proper colouring. Ive since seen the book in WhSmith.

I prefer using pencils rather than ink/felt tips and ive got some metallic pencils from The Range, some staedtler noris colour and some crayola coloured pencils. The crayola are really bright. I generally don't make any attempt at shading, I generally like solid blocks of colour.

The first picture of the peacock is mainly the crayola pencils and the two completed ones use the staedtler and the metallic pencils. I do however look in awe at those of you that can shade. It makes the picture look more professional and artistic.

I have been converted. I have two books now and lots of pens and pencils. Yet to try the pencils! I am loving it so far though!

OwlAtEase · 16/10/2015 07:18

Welcome to all the new posters! Lovely pictures Matilda, Dorito, knickerweasels (I had to shorten your name to this because it made me laugh) and velma!

Pocket I only have the ridiculously expensive pencils so can't help with recommendations for cheaper ones, but I do hope you get a nice surprise at Christmas Smile

Which books did you buy Holly?

I've just entered a competition to win 4 colouring books, I hope I win even though I really really don't need more books.

I have mindfulness colouring and i love you grandma doodle and dream. I'm going to start with grandma one as I want to complete and give it tother as part of her Xmas present, it has beautiful quotes in there which she'll love and the pictures of course. I've been using pens so far but thinking for the other book I'll use pencils. Can you recommend any? I've only bought cheapish ones at the moment but that's because ei couldn't wait to start using them!

OwlAtEase · 16/10/2015 10:35

Those books sound great, such a lovely idea to give the grandma one as a christmas present. I'm using the Faber-Castell Polychromos which are really nice to colour with, but also very expensive. I blame/thank the people on the last colouring thread for encouraging me to get them! But I've also seen a lot of people recommend the Staedtler ergosoft pencils, and they're not as expensive, I think. Maybe start with your cheap ones and see how you feel about the pencils - some posters have said they prefer using pens, and you might feel that way too.

Hi, Im still trying to find cheap pencils Im happy with. Someone recommended the WHSmiths ones, but they are out of stock online at the moment. I have a packet of 12 Bic Pencils and they are lovely, and 24 Club Norris which I don't like cos they feel hard and scratchy and don't blend well. Ive just ordered a packet of the budget Faber Castell pencils from amazon but more excitedly I am getting the Polychromos for Christmas which I am so excited about :-) I love being able to feel like a child again.

slev · 16/10/2015 22:59

My pencils were £5 from Tesco - it was a set of 24 blendable ones. Which doesn't feel like a treat at all, but quite good while you decide whether to spend money on this hobby (because it can get expensive, very quickly - especially if owl is encouraging you to buy polychromos Grin)

Velma I like your pictures. And metallic pencils?!

OwlAtEase · 17/10/2015 13:11

Buy the polychromos! Buy ALL the books! Buy metallic pens and blending pencils! Grin

I have some metallic pencils. They came in a big tin from Aldi. Unfortunately, they've probably been thrown around too much in transit and the leads are all broken inside. :( The colours are lovely though.

Finished my fox! Now to pick the next one. Although my book is somewhat slimmer than it was as DS decided to spend the afternoon colouring with me so I had to rip some of the pages out for him. Fortunately I've now persuaded him to draw dinosaurs instead, before he completely decimates the book!

OwlAtEase · 19/10/2015 08:34

I love it! I would never have thought to do blue as the main colour, that is so striking.

I have just bought the Enchanted Forest book and my Faber Castell pencils arrived in the post this morning. I have just begun my colouring quest! I am not sure i am brave enough to share my attempts. I think i colour like a 5 year old, but i am enjoying so much!

cashewnutty · 19/10/2015 11:43

It's the polychromos pencils i have bought. Someone recommended them on a thread i started asking for recommendations. They are lovely.

cashewnutty · 19/10/2015 14:40

Here is my first attempt.

Neither would I owl - it was another shameless copy from pinterest! I'm doing the chest now though, and it's going to be all my own work - honest. So far I've coloured the chest bit brown - don't think I'll win any points for imagination...

cashew that's great - don't know what you're being shy about! I like the colours - how many pencils did you get? I've just had my Christmas present of 36 polychromos delivered - I just couldn't justify the cost of a bigger set. I've put them on a high shelf out of temptations reach - my plan is to spend Christmas Day colouring my new Lost Ocean book with my posh new pencils!

cashewnutty · 19/10/2015 17:54

Thank you slev. I wish i had put some green through the tail but i did that first then realised a contrast colour would be nice.

I got the 60 pack of polychromos as it seemed good value - but they were very expensive. The colours are lovely. I don't know that i would be patient enough to wait for Christmas!

OwlAtEase · 19/10/2015 23:42

Just stick some random green or orange in there slev, it'll be fabulous!

I love your pic cashew, you chose some great colours. Definitely no need to be shy about posting! I really need to finish my latest one so I can post a photo too.

Wow. Lovely pictures everyone :)
I've just bought enchanted forest and secret garden. Really lovely books and the paper is really thick!
Sainsburys had loads of colouring books so i had a good flick though before buying.

I've been using fineliner pens but have just found lots of pencils from my A level art days and think I actually prefer the pencils.
Think I'll add some new pencils to my wish list, have noted the polychromos ones thanks.

GreenSand · 20/10/2015 09:05

You lot are BAD Smile
I've been missing colouring, and my books and pencils are in storage for another couple of weeks, so I went into the bookshop, thinking I'd pick up a kids colouring book, as we already have kids fetltips.
What do I find amongst all the princesses, Dino's fairy's and cars, but 2 copies of the Enchanted Forrest. Needless to say, the exchange rate is unfavourable, and it cost a fortune...... Now only one copy left on the shelf.....

Will let you know when I've finished. Can only do it n the days the kids haven't been asked to take in colours.....

BlueEyeshadow · 20/10/2015 10:33

Finished three pictures yesterday. The big one has taken weeks but the other two were much quicker.

I am in awe of those of you who can colour quickly. Between work, poor light meaning that I can't colour without being in my own shadow (damn the English autumn/winter) and general life getting in the way, it seems to take me a month per page!

I've got this week off and even suggested to DS that we had an at home day tomorrow, rather than the onslaught of theme parks and zoos which seem to make up half-term. But no, no such luck. So colouring will have to wait for another day.

Which is my next question - how many of you admit to this? DH knows, but I sort of feel that if I got my colouring out at work lunch time, I'd get a lot of strange looks. Somehow, although it's a "thing", it seems less socially acceptable than browsing the Daily Mail website (for example!).

OwlAtEase · 21/10/2015 00:52

I think some people see it as childish. I know my brother thinks it's silly (but I don't care, I've asked him for Lost Ocean for my birthday because he works in a bookshop Grin). I've seen negative comments on other threads on MN.

But most of my Facebook friends now know I colour, because I just entered a colouring competition that I had to share on my wall. If anyone had been critical I would have pointed out it's no different to other hobbies, and it's really good for my mental health.
