Feel free to join in and ask about materials, or share photos of the pictures you're working on, or just have a chat! It might send you broke, but it's a fabulous hobby Grin

The Lord of the Rings colouring book - when is that out? has anyone got its title?

Been using pens for a while and just started with pencils. I like each of them, but have to admit the pencils are just great for blending and variation in depth

BlueEyeshadow · 30/09/2015 16:47

I've seen an Alice in Wonderland colouring book online. I love the Tenniel illustrations so I'm very tempted. Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list!

FeelingSmurfy · 30/09/2015 16:56

Phew! I lost you for a while there, bookmarking so I don't get lost again

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 30/09/2015 17:23

Hi I'm new to adult colouring, I was completely oblivious until I happened to see some books in Sainsburys. I'm undecided on a book to start me off and whether to get the fine colouring pens or pencils?
Any suggests for a book and pens/pencils for a beginner would be much appreciated :)

Meerka · 30/09/2015 19:49

thanks Joffrey!

good ones to start with BBQ .... well, teh Art Therapy book is nice. So is Secret Garden or Animal Kingdom. YOu can get some brilliant ideas from Pinterest pages too, though they're way ahead of anything I can do, I pinch some colour schemes :)

My pens and pencils arent UK names so someone else might be able to say better than me :)

ladybird69 · 30/09/2015 20:53

where do you all keep your pencils/pens? any nice pencil cases around?

JoffreyBaratheon · 01/10/2015 09:53

BBQs, I prefer pencils but that's totally subjective. I started with some Staedtler Ergosoft pencils purely because they were on special offer in Tescos (£4 for 12 - not sure if offer is still on but that was during the Back To School frenzy). And then I got quite a few Derwent (different types) as it was my bday recently and I went to the Pencil Museum as well! And I love the Derwent enough to want to stick with them. But my art student son left behind 2 packets of Staedtler fineliners (very skinny felt pen type things) which work better in the books with finer detail or can be used alongside the pencils and I am finding although I prefer pencils, I like to use the pens for some details.

There's so much to explore. I'd start off spending as little as possible and maybe try both to see which you prefer, then build from there.

ladybird I just keep mine in the tins they came in - mainly Derwent sets so they came in tins which are slim enough to slip into my bookcases. But years ago I got some plywood sort of cubby hole storage things in Ikea and they are great for loose pens, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners etc. I have moved my two Ikea storage boxes back into book shelves so they're close at hand! I have an old Paperchase pencil case as well.

Meerka · 01/10/2015 17:45

joffrey. Damn you and amazon. It recommended along with the Tolkein book, this

www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-The-Colouring-Book/dp/0141367385/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=112HAYH518QES628DR0P

and

www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Colouring-Warner-Brothers/dp/1783705485/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=112HAYH518QES628DR0P

it's gonna cost a fortune! and I can only justify buying them if I do another Dry October and it's my birthday and I wanna drink some wine! ;)

JoffreyBaratheon · 01/10/2015 19:27

Oh now my art student son is Game of Thrones crazy.... Think I'll order that for him!

fuzzpig · 01/10/2015 19:47

Signing in! I do love a nice colouring in book :)

I haven't got any new ones for a while and resisted the temptation of all those ones on Amazon lightning deals. Actually I might ask for one as a little Christmas present (to go with the main present I know I'm getting - LEGO!!! :o)

I'm really tempted to get the Tolkien one for DH. Or an Escher one but they're hard to find/stupidly overpriced.

I really like Beyond Sudoku magazine and puzzles like Hanjie, as it's a combination of puzzle and colouring.

I really want nice pens but I'm excited enough about the replacement Crayola Supertips I've ordered for me the DCs.

slev · 01/10/2015 23:23

Damn you Meerka I've ordered myself Lost Ocean for Christmas, and seeing as I still.haven't finished my tree from up thread, that felt like enough (ruddy work getting in the way of colouring). But Harry Potter?! Hmm, can I justify two books when one would last me a year anyway.

I'm trying to convince myself Harry Potter isn't worth getting as there's not much colour in our. But we all know I'll have ordered it by this time tomorrow...

And finished tree picture to follow soon - honest! I'm hoping rugby at the weekend will give me some peaceful colouring time!

Meerka · 02/10/2015 09:04

yeah. this colouring thing is bad isnt it !

OwlAtEase · 02/10/2015 10:44

Nooo Meerka stop!! I've already asked for the LOTR and Lost Ocean books for my birthday next month, and now you've gone and found all those amazing books. I just showed DH and he said "Get them! Get them ALL" because he is a loveable bad influence. Not sure if they ship to Australia though.

fuzzpig I had never heard of Hanjie puzzles before, they sound fun!

ladybird I keep my pencils in their original tin because there are so many of them! And I like seeing them all in the right colour order.

BBQ I really like Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest. They were my first books as a beginner. Lots of lovely clear pictures with different levels of detail.

Why are there so few pictures on this thread?

(It's okay, I can speak to you like that. I was on the picture posty last thread...)

Since then I've acquired the polychromos which are just beautiful, but not had much time. Partly because I got used to colouring in the garden with a glass of pink stuff and I can't do that now it's turned parky.

Will get back to it soon or come back to flog you some second hand pencils.

ladybird69 · 04/10/2015 04:38

thanks Joffrey and Owl I've only got cheap set of pencils so not in nice case. perhaps I need to invest in some decent pencils.
I've just bought the secret garden from Amazon, wow fantastic quality and beautiful pictures.

needyounow · 05/10/2015 21:02

I have been lurking since the first thread. Finally finished my first picture, has taken months as haven't had a lot of free time due to work. Still need lots of practice but happy with it for a first attempt.

Tree as promised! I like it, although I wish the colours were brighter. Fortunately, as I was bemoaning this fact to DH tonight, he told me I should get myself some proper art pencils. I pointed out that would be more expensive, but apparently that doesn't matter as long as I'm using them. So that's licence to buy some polychromos, no?!

Moving on to the fox now (still in Enchanted Forest). Hopefully that one won't take so long to do!

slev · 05/10/2015 22:00

And now with the photo...Blush

slev · 05/10/2015 22:11

Oh FFS, this ruddy phone. You'll just have to imagine it for now - the ipad is downstairs and I'm too comfy colouring in bed to go and get it!

tldr · 05/10/2015 22:39

slev, polychromos speed the entire thing up. Much quicker to get decent colour on page. The tree is fab, btw. Wink

needyou, hello, nice octopus!

Meerka · 06/10/2015 00:35

lovely octopus slev! really nice colours. trying that pic myself but compared to your octopus, mine is going to scuttle away and hide behind some rocks =)

AnthonyPandy · 06/10/2015 00:50

Have any of you seen this article? www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/sep/12/adult-colouring-in-devotee-books-modern-tribes Is it accurate do you think? I thought it was funny!

Meerka · 06/10/2015 10:17

hehe, yeah, it was funny :D
