Craft shopping addiction

JollyScaryGiant · 11/10/2013 22:33

Hello. My name is Jolly. I am addicted to buying yarn. I have no more money or space but still went into a charity shop today and asked if they had any wool. Then spent £4.50 on it. 1kg of yarn I have no use for.

I rregularly go on wool websites and fill my trolley. Sometimes I checkout. Sometimes I don't.

I think about crochet a lot.

I clearly have a problem.

See Housemum ... you think you're free, then you get sucked back in Grin. The power of the yarn cannot be fought

SoupDragon · 18/10/2013 10:44

Um... I ordered 5 skeins of the plain white. I plan on making a...er.. um... wrap. Yes. Let's go with wrap.

If it's nice, I may order the teal and the multicoloured

SoupDragon · 18/10/2013 10:46

There's no problem with me having enough time to use up all my stash and complete all my projects as I plan on making one of these

SoupDragon · 18/10/2013 10:50

It has just occurred to me that it will double as yarn storage! A life time's stash in one small bigger-on-the-inside package. Oh yes.

LatteLady · 18/10/2013 11:20

I no longer have a dining room... I have storage for my stash of yarn and fabric...

But it is mobile, I know that there is some in my bedroom wardrobe from previous Ally Pally visits, there is a lot in my living room because I have the first Christmas craft show the weekend after next and the electric rotary cutter is set up in there. In my Morning room the new Janome machine is ready for action. The 11 sets of DPNs which arrived on Tuesday are sitting in the sofa teasing me, actually don't look behind the sofa or under it ... I told you DON'T look!

Actually there is only one room without any craft related stuff and that is the bath room (craft books on the book shelf in the hall and magazines in magazine boxes on the chest of drawers on the upstairs landing) and I think that I could use the airing cupbaord.

Anyway, this is not a problem, it is an opportunity!

monikar · 18/10/2013 11:23

Housemum you should re-name your spare room your 'craft room' Grin .

My downfall (well, one of them) is charity shop wool - we have one near us which always has wool and it is so cheap so I have to buy it if it is there. The trouble with it though is that usually there is only one ball which then isn't enough to make much so I have to stow it in my drawers in colour order, which is lovely and satisfying.

Soupy that is lovely wool and will make a gorgeous wrap. I also assign various purchases a project to justify to myself why it is essential - one of my more outrageous purchases a while back was when I planned to make all adult ladies in the family slipper socks for Christmas (the same year as the children's hats which also didn't get started).

I might also bump the making of a tardis to the top of my WIP as a solution to my stash storage problems Grin .

bigbadbarry · 18/10/2013 11:36

The trouble with assigning stash to projects, mentally, is that when you think of a new project you can't use that earmarked stash, can you, you have to buy more! Sigh.

SoupDragon · 18/10/2013 11:37

How is that "trouble"? Confused

LatteLady · 18/10/2013 11:43

In days of your, you set aside provender for the winter or in case or war or siege. We are just very prepared... think about WW2 when they had to rip back old sweaters, will we have to do that, will we buffalo! Just think when it all kicks off, we will be sitting pretty... which is probably why I still have a tin of sardines for emergencies in my larder despite never ever eating them!

monikar · 18/10/2013 11:46

I agree, you can't use assigned stash for something else - more has to be bought and stowed Smile.

I have tried to win magazine competitions where the prize is a load of wool (but never have) - it would be heaven for me to have a complete assignment-free addition to my stash Grin .

AntoinetteCosway · 18/10/2013 11:48

My name is Antoinette and I love yarn. Love it love it love it.

Mmmmmm. Yarn.

monikar · 18/10/2013 12:02

Welcome Antoinette you are among friends here Smile .

roguepixie · 18/10/2013 12:28

I always want to be prepared for any eventuality Grin. I work on the basis that I am preparing for the Zombie Invasion (which will surely happen) ... although where I will stow all my stash on HMS Illustrious I don't know Grin

roguepixie · 18/10/2013 12:29

Also, I think zombies are weirdly allergic to yarn ... so the more I have, the safer I'll be. Grin

starfishmummy · 18/10/2013 12:39

I have sent a Facebook join request but you won't know who I am and I am using my phone and there doesn't seem to be a button on here to pm someone and and and

Sob

roguepixie · 18/10/2013 12:51

starfish, don't cry. Can you PM SDTG when you get home - I'm sure she'll send an invite.

TheHuffAndPuffALot · 18/10/2013 13:00

Thanks for adding me to the fb group. I'm a novice (I've not knitted since I was a child) and picked up some knitting needles crochet hook and wool at a car boot sale two weeks ago, but I've got the bug!
Just need to make something now...

LatteLady · 18/10/2013 14:17

This is what I aspire to in storage... www.pinterest.com/SewHQ/craft-rooms-and-storage/

I have made a start with my ribbons and purchased a large supply of tongue depressors from e-bay to do this: www.pinterest.com/pin/219409813069357168/

And have just sent a facebook request to join... if you look at my MN name, my rl surname should give me away Wink

Housemum · 18/10/2013 18:59

lattelady love your thinking, our yarn stash is part of the zombie plan :)

As well as stash busting projects, I have also amassed a large collection of the DDs' dresses - my grand plan is to make a memories quilt using 2.5" squares (most of their dresses I sold on at NCT sales etc but some are so pretty I didn't want to let them go) - I found a fab free pattern for a heart quilt using squares and half square triangles. Need to get round to actually cutting them up - scared to start! Might find a rubbish cheap dress to practice on! Of course, it would look mad and there wouldn't be enough of just dresses so it necessitated a trip to the fabric shop to get some neutrals for between the hearts. Took cash so I couldn't buy anything else!

Housemum · 18/10/2013 19:06

Have sent a FB request as I rarely remember to check on Ravelry (profile pic is me + DH + 2DDs at Olympics) - I have an album in my photos called finished projects (not many in there!) the cute knitted Santa was finished for DD3 last year. Shame I started it for DD1 in 1996... Blush The fox cuddly toy was a kit I bought when I was in 6th form, finished it last year - that's about 28 years in the making! I did say I was slow ;) although the Christmas block-of-the-month-club quilt was actually made within 2 years so it depends how much I am enjoying what I'm doing :)

goodjambadjar · 22/10/2013 17:53

I love that this thread had died since the other groups started! Grin

Bunch of enablers that we are. Blush

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/10/2013 11:02

I think I have accepted all the FB group requests up to date now. Apologies if there have been any delays.

AntoinetteCosway · 23/10/2013 15:37

What the name of the FB group?

roguepixie · 23/10/2013 15:45

Antoinette - it is a closed group so you need to PM SDGT (her name is above yours in this thread). She will send you an invite.
