ok, I am a very basic knitter. I cant read patterns and can do a basic row, but want to knit a square of edgar (as Im sure lots of others do) so it was suggested on the other thread here that a thread was started for the less confident where we can collate advice and help without feeling a bit dim and where the more advanced can help us out a bit!

knittingrocks Just run an iron over them - being careful to just flatten and not stretch the knitting or it will block bigger!

KnitterNotTwitter · 31/03/2011 13:10

Just thought I should say 'hello' too. I'm a latecomer to the Edgar's Blanket Project - having only seen it on Ravelry yesterday.....

Fortunately I already had some Grey Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK at home so am now just knitting wildly... :)

There are lots of lovely free patterns on Ravelry.com which you might like to explore... i've found that the dishcloth patterns are often the right size or can be easily adjusted.... some examples:

owl
sheep
Dalek!
flowers

Hope that is useful... Happy knitting folks

I'm getting confused. Is the deadline tomorrow or next Friday? I thought it was next Fri, so had great plans to knit a few squares over the weekend (have done two already) and then block them at leisure... Should I panic now then???

KnitterNotTwitter · 31/03/2011 13:50

I'm sure Pixie told me that the deadline was the 8th of April....

Also I've just deleted the address that I was supposed to be sending my squares to - can someone PM it to me to save me bothering Pixie Blush Thanks

purplepidjin · 31/03/2011 14:12

Next Friday is fine.

Knitter, you're sending to me so I'll PM you x

sayanything · 31/03/2011 14:30

Oh good, thank you.

KnittingRocks · 31/03/2011 19:22

Oh good! Also, do u want all the ends sewn in or will u use them to stitch the squares together?

purplepidjin · 31/03/2011 19:36

Sewn in please. I'll be crocheting them all together in great long lines!

Now I have to work out how to organise it...

Finally have last two squares blocking. I'm now only a small amount of applique away from finishing.

Purplepidjin I've got some bits of yarn on bobbins from the two-colour heart - I'll include them (minus bobbins) in the hope they will help you with the assembly.

If you can still bear to think about it afterwards, I'd love some tips on how to crochet squares together. It seems a far better solution than sewing them. I am a completely novice crocheter, however.

I do hope the Edgars aren't vehemently opposed to West Ham/Aston Villa/Burnley, however. JL had such a poor selection of Rowan Cashsoft in the initial, rather prescriptive list of colours that I ended up with a pale blue and a purple. I didn't really think about it until I saw them together in one square!

magicOC · 01/04/2011 00:30

Been of coulour past few days so knitting took a back seat, but, all squares now complee and will be posted tomorrow.

purplepidjin · 01/04/2011 12:34

LadyW, you can either slip stitch together, whipstitch with a darning needle or my preferred method which is to double crochet into the ends of the rows.

So, you put the squares right sides together then put the hook through both squares. Yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.

Very secure and neat (really joping it works on the knitted ones...)

magicOC · 01/04/2011 13:58

Purple, my squares are in the post hope they arrive ok. Ive put magicOC on the back of the envelope.

magicOC · 01/04/2011 13:59

Oh and thanks again for doing the sewing together.

purplepidjin · 01/04/2011 14:00

Nice one. I'll post up on my woolly shoutouts thread when they arrive Grin

BornToFolk · 01/04/2011 14:24

I've posted mine! However, I realised that I forgot to put the leftover yarn (though not very much) into the envelope. I also forgot to indicate who sent them. Blush Anyway, I've sent 3 squares in purple and there's a card in a red envelope addressed to Edgar.

KnittingRocks · 01/04/2011 17:20

Squares posted but I also forgot to i/d them! 6 squares, 3 in light blue and 3 in dark blue with a card for Leo's family.

Thank u so much for finishing it all off - don't envy you!

ClaireOB · 01/04/2011 17:40

Finished mine now (8), will block and post Monday. They're v near 15cm square but just to be on safe side.

I hope the quilts give some comfort to the Edgars at such a bleak time. They have been on my mind a lot.

womma · 02/04/2011 00:05

Right, my tension is bonkers and I've started and undone more squares than I care to think about...if they're coming up a bit bigger than 6 ins will blocking make them a bit smaller?

LadyWellian · 02/04/2011 01:45

Womma some of mine were more than 6ins when wet - I squished them up a bit (neatly of course!) when blocking and they seem to be OK.

Purplepidjin thanks for the tips. You can definitely crochet knitted squares together - it says so in my book so it must be true. Not sure I envy you with 6 and 8 squares coming from the most recent posters - and I have done 4 Blush. Mine will hopefuly be in the post tomorrow.

The Edgars are either going to have a massive blanket, or the charities some people mentioned (prem babies I think? or children's ICU?) will get a great windfall. (Or perhaps both!) I don't mind what happens to mine but if I can put in a good word for one of them, I'd like the one with the applique leaves to end up on the Edgars' blanket.

purplepidjin · 02/04/2011 07:04

LadyW, if you're Hants/Dorset I'm happy to meet for coffee and show you. I also spend a fair few weekends every Summer at Santa Pod in Northants, which broadens my geographical range somewhat Wink

3x5' = 60 squares
4x6' = 96 squares
5x6' = 120 squares
6x6' = 144 squares

I have wadding and shops for cheap cushion covers nearby, so I may make a cushion cover from the rest. I think, as the squares were intended for them, I would prefer everything to go to the Edgar family. We can choose a charity and do that seperately, if anyone wants to organise it?

I crochet clothes for Lisa's Stars and they recommend that blankets don't include crochet because of the holes. So a mixed blanket wouldn't be much use to a NICU, unfortunately Sad

womma · 02/04/2011 12:47

Thanks LadyW, you're a star

purplepidjin · 02/04/2011 21:21

Shoutouts thread updated! nearly couldn't get in the bloody door when I got home from work Grin

LadyWellian · 03/04/2011 01:16

Aww, that's really sweet of you Purplepidjin, but I am a scummy Londoner Grin.

Let us know if you need financial contributions for the cushion covers.

I have PM'd you about my squares, btw.

LadyWellian · 03/04/2011 02:33

Have put pics on my profile. You learn something new every day Grin.
