Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

"As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children"

So you agree there was no need to pay additional £££ to have them painted over.

Not local artists, professional cartoonists from the national papers.

Now that's just headline-grabbing nonsense.

These are government buildings that have security arrangements. People can't just walk in and start painting the walls.
If the walls were painted with murals (strange that there are no actual pictures of these artworks in situ ?) They would have been commissioned by HM Government and the artist would have used this commission to advertise his/her work. As yet there has been total silence and no outrage from the artist at their work being removed.

The more I read about this the more I think it is 'fake news'.

There'll be a separate budget for decoration/furniture, etc. They won't be playing cushions against counsellors. That's not how the money works.

HTH

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 09:05

Jenrick did not have them painted over because he thought they were frightening children.

He had the painted over because he thought it gave the detention centre a welcoming ambiance.

This is assuming they were ever there in the first place 🤔

Here you go.

Here you go.

That could be anywhere.

Looks like a children hospital unit to me.

Yes, see previous post for your fake news. The images have been in a number of the online reports.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 09:10

The idea that people start suggesting 'fake news' without even bothering to do a basic check first is ridiculous.

It's been covered very widely across mainstream press. Jenrick hasn't bothered to deny it.

That doesn't prove the location of the images.

Do you believe everything you see in the press?

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 09:13

Will you construct any argument to defend this?

If it didn't happen I'm pretty sure Jenrick could have been on Sky news within an hour explaining that. He hasn't.

Lots of items have been covered widely, doesn't mean they are true.

And you have right to your opinion.

Not sure why Sky News should be the medium of choice?

Blossomtoes · 08/07/2023 09:16

People can't just walk in and start painting the walls.

No they can’t. But they can make arrangements with the person responsible for running the place to do it.

SinnerBoy · 08/07/2023 09:16

Eveninginparis

Oh dear. No, I don't believe everything I read, but this has been covered widely, along with Jenrick trying to keep it quiet. It's been confirmed by officials that the mural has now been painted over.

If you want to believe that every single thing in the papers is a lie, then that's your lookout.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 09:16

So why hasn't he issued a statement clarifying the story?

Treaclemine · 08/07/2023 09:18

What does Disney have to say?

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 09:18

It's not opinion that Jenrick could deny the story. He absolutely could. If you object to Sky (that actually reported the story) I'm sure The Telegraph or GB News would have run it.

Cornettoninja · 08/07/2023 09:19

@Eveninginparis whats your basis for declaring this as ‘fake news’? Do you think it’s some sort of smear campaign against Jenrick? If so, why’s there been no kind of rebuttal or denial from him or his team?

You yourself have offered up lots of rebuttals, why has there been nothing from Jenrick?

Lots of items have been covered widely, doesn't mean they are true

doesn't mean they’re fake either. What’s your criteria for sorting out a truth and a fake?

smilesup · 08/07/2023 09:19

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 08:57

No need to be so rude.

For someone who claims to be tolerant and care about these children you certainly aren't very tolerant of different opinions to yours.

Illustrations and pictures are universal. No they are not. Were you aware that Disney and other cartoon characters are banned by the regimes in some Islamic countries for being 'unIslamic'?

they’re in no way threatening. Try seeing it through a child's eyes. Have you never known a child that was frightened of clowns, or cartoon characters?

These are vulnerable, traumatised children. They have come from areas that are war-torn or have despotic regimes. They could have seen their parents/family raped and murdered. They could have travelled half-way across Europe and pushed from pillar to post. They are shoved into (unseaworthy) crafts and pushed off into the sea, often at night. They don't speak English and know no-one.
Then they get picked up by people in uniform and taken to place staffed by more people in uniform where the walls are garishly painted with 6-foot high characters who look like scary giants.

In their haste to bash the Tories and pillory Jenrick some people on this thread have lost sight of the human cost of all this to these children and don't seem to have lost an empathy gene.

As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children.

Can you find any proof that Mickey Mouse is banned in Islamic countries. I have never heard this before and know loads of people from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Africa.

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 09:20

@SinnerBoy along with Jenrick trying to keep it quiet

Where is that reported?

It's been confirmed by officials that the mural has now been painted over.

Where, when?

@Notonthestairs So why hasn't he issued a statement clarifying the story?

I have no idea, I'm not clairvoyant. Why not write and ask you MP for clarification?

Dovetail40 · 08/07/2023 09:20

of course you do. And other people have the right to opine that your opinion is baseless and ridiculous.

It’s a good system.
