No need to be so rude.
For someone who claims to be tolerant and care about these children you certainly aren't very tolerant of different opinions to yours.
Illustrations and pictures are universal. No they are not. Were you aware that Disney and other cartoon characters are banned by the regimes in some Islamic countries for being 'unIslamic'?
they’re in no way threatening. Try seeing it through a child's eyes. Have you never known a child that was frightened of clowns, or cartoon characters?
These are vulnerable, traumatised children. They have come from areas that are war-torn or have despotic regimes. They could have seen their parents/family raped and murdered. They could have travelled half-way across Europe and pushed from pillar to post. They are shoved into (unseaworthy) crafts and pushed off into the sea, often at night. They don't speak English and know no-one.
Then they get picked up by people in uniform and taken to place staffed by more people in uniform where the walls are garishly painted with 6-foot high characters who look like scary giants.
In their haste to bash the Tories and pillory Jenrick some people on this thread have lost sight of the human cost of all this to these children and don't seem to have lost an empathy gene.
As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children.
