Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

Even worse is that CHILDREN are even in these places - especially if they are unaccompanied - they are looked after children and should be under the care of children's services not in a detention centre

This x 100.

I agree with him but not for the reasons he gave.

Remember that these children are coming from cultures unfamiliar with these cartoon characters and could find them quite scary with their big eyes and red mouths

Children's cartoon characters are pretty much worldwide due to TV, cheapness, smartphones and ease of voice overs. They are familiar to most, if not all the small children and SEN children that arrive here seeking safety and security. Familiar images go a long way towards helping children to settle.

Robert Jenrick is a cruel fucker, monumental hypocrite, wasteful cunt and shit constituent MP.

When I hear Jenrick my mind translates it to Heinrich (Himmler).

Blossomtoes · 07/07/2023 23:26

Of all the vile things this lot have done in 13 years this so the one that makes me feel sickest. It’s pure spite, nothing more. When you go and vote next remember this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/07/2023 01:01

Just heard on Sky News that artists have volunteered to paint new murals over the newly painted grey walls.Grin

That's brilliant hopefully that offer is taken up.

When I hear Jenrick my mind translates it to Heinrich (Himmler).

His grandparents were Jewish wartime refugees, which makes it even viler.

bendy75 · 08/07/2023 05:53

Oh my goodness, what a horror of a human being, disgusting little man.

SadSandwich · 08/07/2023 06:24

Is it not reported in the Daily Fail or similar rags?

Don’t talk such crap. Illustrations and pictures are universal. The characters may not be to the taste of individual children but they’re in no way threatening.

Birdienumnumm · 08/07/2023 08:20

I’ve already sent him my thoughts on this as his constituent. He’s utterly vile and corrupt but this feels like the worst thing he’s ever done. He usually responds to my letters defending his actions but I can’t fathom how he’ll be able to defend this

SinnerBoy · 08/07/2023 08:25

It's been reported in the Mail that it's been painted over, but some local artists have offered to paint a new one.

The comments are almost all critical of him.

ShoesoftheWorld · 08/07/2023 08:27

I read about this in the German media.

It's a terrible, terrible look for the UK.

(And yes, German asylum policy has its problems but the only German party whose people would do this is the odious AfD. A party in which I suspect some Tories would feel right at home)

Not local artists, professional cartoonists from the national papers.

No..he really is just a nasty Tory. Its reported in the Daily Mail, Sky news, i news, BBC etc.
Anyone that has clicked YABU are soulless ghouls who need to realise that they would have been the sort of people that became Nazi's in WWII.

No need to be so rude.

For someone who claims to be tolerant and care about these children you certainly aren't very tolerant of different opinions to yours.

Illustrations and pictures are universal. No they are not. Were you aware that Disney and other cartoon characters are banned by the regimes in some Islamic countries for being 'unIslamic'?

they’re in no way threatening. Try seeing it through a child's eyes. Have you never known a child that was frightened of clowns, or cartoon characters?

These are vulnerable, traumatised children. They have come from areas that are war-torn or have despotic regimes. They could have seen their parents/family raped and murdered. They could have travelled half-way across Europe and pushed from pillar to post. They are shoved into (unseaworthy) crafts and pushed off into the sea, often at night. They don't speak English and know no-one.
Then they get picked up by people in uniform and taken to place staffed by more people in uniform where the walls are garishly painted with 6-foot high characters who look like scary giants.

In their haste to bash the Tories and pillory Jenrick some people on this thread have lost sight of the human cost of all this to these children and don't seem to have lost an empathy gene.

As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children.

Zebedee55 · 08/07/2023 08:59

Whatever he, or anyone else, thinks about the "boats" coming over, I cannot see what he thought could be achieved by this.🤔

The traffickers or their passengers won't stop operating/coming because a Mickey Mouse mural has been painted over.

Jenrick didn't do it for publicity or to cheer up Tory MPs/members, because he tried to keep it quiet.

I would seriously like him to explain what went through his head when he ordered this.🙄
