Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

Now that's just headline-grabbing nonsense.

These are government buildings that have security arrangements. People can't just walk in and start painting the walls.
If the walls were painted with murals (strange that there are no actual pictures of these artworks in situ ?) They would have been commissioned by HM Government and the artist would have used this commission to advertise his/her work. As yet there has been total silence and no outrage from the artist at their work being removed.

The more I read about this the more I think it is 'fake news'.

There you go.

Literally front page of the BBC news website

It's also in the guardian, daily mail, mirror, telegraph, sky news and the I as well as being plastered all over twitter.

I genuinely think that the reason we are as a country is because people think they can believe whatever they want and keep repeating it until it becomes a kind of truth, and everyone is entitled to a opinion.

Thats how we've ended up with such delights as

Brexit

5g and vaccine conspiracies

Believing the tories are financially literate

That the NHS was no better under previous governments

Small boats are the biggest threat to the UK

And so on and so on.

We have almost unlimited access to data at our fingertips, which people seem unable to use.

Murals

Minister Robert Jenrick ordered painting over of child asylum unit murals

Robert Jenrick is reported to have considered the cartoon images in the Dover centre too welcoming.

I have no idea, I'm not clairvoyant. Why not write and ask you MP for clarification?

yes, but as you’ve aired your opinion as to what makes this fake news it’s not unreasonable to presume you also have an opinion on why Jenkins hasn’t offered up a comment.

@smilesup Can you find any proof that Mickey Mouse is banned in Islamic countries. I have never heard this before and know loads of people from Iran, Iraq,

https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2014/06/iran-children-cartoon-stationery-censor-warning-spiderman.html

That’s nine years old in one country - got anything current covering more than a single Islamic country?

FixTheBone · 08/07/2023 09:28

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 09:09

That could be anywhere.

Looks like a children hospital unit to me.

It's fucking captioned .

Take it up with the 8 news agencies if it doesn't fit your batshit conspiracy theory.

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 08:57

No need to be so rude.

For someone who claims to be tolerant and care about these children you certainly aren't very tolerant of different opinions to yours.

Illustrations and pictures are universal. No they are not. Were you aware that Disney and other cartoon characters are banned by the regimes in some Islamic countries for being 'unIslamic'?

they’re in no way threatening. Try seeing it through a child's eyes. Have you never known a child that was frightened of clowns, or cartoon characters?

These are vulnerable, traumatised children. They have come from areas that are war-torn or have despotic regimes. They could have seen their parents/family raped and murdered. They could have travelled half-way across Europe and pushed from pillar to post. They are shoved into (unseaworthy) crafts and pushed off into the sea, often at night. They don't speak English and know no-one.
Then they get picked up by people in uniform and taken to place staffed by more people in uniform where the walls are garishly painted with 6-foot high characters who look like scary giants.

In their haste to bash the Tories and pillory Jenrick some people on this thread have lost sight of the human cost of all this to these children and don't seem to have lost an empathy gene.

As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children.

For someone who claims to be tolerant

Did I claim that? I’m not completely tolerant at all. In fact I recognise that I’m acutely hostile to some people/views.

Illustrations and pictures are universal. No they are not. Were you aware that Disney and other cartoon characters are banned by the regimes in some Islamic countries for being 'unIslamic'?

Are these children seeking asylum signed up to Islamic regimes then? Did you ask their opinions?

Sure, we’ll just gloss over the decades and millions/billions poured in to researching exactly what characters appeal to children by commercial and public organisations.

If the law hasn't changed then there won't be an update, will there?

https://www.deccanherald.com/content/353782/watching-cartoons-un-islamic-says.html

Any more oppressive regimes on offer? Because you did say “countries”, not just one.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/07/2023 09:33

People trying to defend the indefensible here….

Even if Disney is banned over “there”, they left “there” because of oppression. So entering that centre and being reassured that we provide freedom of cultural expression and joyful, fun children’s culture would surely be a massive relief.

You should walk in there and be told “don’t worry, you made it, everything’s going to be ok, let’s get you on your feet again”

Cornettoninja · 08/07/2023 09:34

@Eveninginparis are you arguing that we should emulate the cultures of regimes we would class as totalitarian to make asylum seekers more comfortable?

AdamRyan · 08/07/2023 09:36

This story made me cry when I read it the other day. Less the painting over murals than the rational that immigrants need to know these are law enforcement centres.

Imagine being a child fleeing a country with brutal law enforcement. Arriving into a law enforcement centre will be terrifying for them.

I now can't believe people on this thread writing it off as "fake news". Very trumpian.

The Narcissist’s Prayer (by Dayna Craig)
That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.

AdamRyan · 08/07/2023 09:39

Also, do you know how much child psychologists cost evening compared to people who paint murals? I wouldn't be surprised if the staff painted them for free, that's what usually happens in youth facilities.

If not the facility needs painted anyway, what's the issue with it being colours instead of grey?

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 09:39

So these traumatised, vulnerable children should walk into a centre look at cartoons on walls and suddenly snap out of their PTSD like magic?

I am appalled at your total lack of understanding of child psychology and insensitivity to these children's needs which will be long term..
And you call Jenrick 'nasty' ?? I think you need to look in the mirror.

IClaudine · 08/07/2023 09:39

I think possibly some posters on this thread are less than genuine. There will be more of this as we get nearer to a GE.

thinking that a child might like a mural does not mean that people have lost an empathy gene. If this isn’t what you meant than which posters are you saying have lost an empathy gene

As a side-issue, as a taxpayer I take strong exception to the government using my money for murals when it would be better spent on translators, Child Psychologists, social workers and other professionals that could help these unfortunate children

the government are using tax payers money to get rid of the mural

Ireolu · 08/07/2023 09:39

There is just an unnecessary meaness to this policy. Wish I could say I was shocked, I am not as with most things with this govt it's all optics.

I would imagine that people/families turning up at an immigration centre are escaping the very intolerant regimes you are commenting on.

Regardless, Jenrik has form for corruption and fraud, him being a mean arsed son of a stunt would be no surprise.
