Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

'Scandalous', 'shocking' why all the emotive language?

Ever thought of writing for Mills & Boon??

I come on here to have an informed discussion, others come on to show their ignorance.

SingingNettles · 11/07/2023 21:09

Why are we entertaining the ‘not age appropriate’ argument, as if it was actually part of the rationale for the removal of the murals?

Glad you've acknowledged that . 🙂

“I know you are but what am I” isn’t high level discourse at the best of times.

And in the context you’re trying it, it doesn’t even make sense.

It's easier than admitting that you agree with the cruel too welcoming reasoning, I guess.

Hi folks,

Please can we ask for a bit of peace and love?

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 20:25

Yes, but how will that make a difference?

Politics is never moved by expressions of public sentiment? Interesting opinion

I think that is all many of us are suggesting that the Minister try and show.

A cartoonist's statement about the repainting of #MickeyMouse #mural at child #asylum seeker centre

To be disgusted at the petty minded cruelty of Robert Jenrick?
cakeorwine · 11/07/2023 21:39

If he is worried about the age appropriateness, then will he be ok if the staff do stuff to make the place more welcoming to teenagers?

Clavinova · 11/07/2023 21:43

DuncinToffee
Would your teenage children be insulted if they saw them in a children's a&e?

They would certainly be insulted if they saw them painted all over the walls of a hospital ward/clinic for teenagers.

Then murals were not Home Office approved. Now, they weren't age appropriate for teens

That's what I posted last week - the murals were not age appropriate for teenagers!

That’s not why they were erased. It’s taken them a week to come up with that. And if that was the case, why weren’t they replaced with some more suitable?

It may well not be age appropriate.

HOWEVER - that was not the reason given last week.

The media was saying that it was felt that it was too welcoming and certainly there was no Home Office statement that said "Actually, we felt it was age inappropriate"

So we have a Home Office that is happy to paint over a mural and is happy for the reason for that to be "we don't want to be welcoming" to children.

What does that say about the people who run the Home Office?

Really?
But anyway this centre is for vulnerable children of all ages.

Do you agree with painting over Baloo for being too welcoming?

Clavinova · 11/07/2023 21:48

The inspection report had some criticisms of safeguarding and cleanliness at the centre - I think the staff should concentrate on making improvements there.

And not be upset by painting over murals for being too welcoming?

So do you agree with the painting over?

I agree. Instead they wasted time painting walls that didn’t need it. Weird priorities.

anyone saying that its ok for a mural to be painted over because its too welcome and showing no peace and love whatsoever

Based on what we've heard from Robert Jenrick so far I assume that he'd think that the centre was too clean and too safe for children.

Clavinova · 11/07/2023 21:59

The media was saying that it was felt that it was too welcoming

In fact, some media outlets also mentioned the 'welcome signs with colourful branding' in the same sentence as the murals - which I agreed was a bit odd if official government policy was 'Stop the Boats'.

Have the other reception centres been asked to paint over their cartoon murals or just the one in the news report?

One would hope not. Perhaps Jenrick hasn’t got round to visiting them yet.
