Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

😂😂😂😂

@Eveninginparis still not admitting that you got some basic geography wrong because you couldn't be bothered to check your source material?

BTW the Low Countries haven't existed since Belgium gained its independence in 1839.

Nothing wrong with the source material;-

@cakeorwine just popping on to say thanks leading the evidence based debate with knowledge and authority. 💐

All I have is my disgust that anyone, anywhere is so lacking in humanity and poisoned with spite that treating vulnerable children this way could ever occur to them. Let alone that they would say it out loud, let alone that they would give it as an instruction. It really is revolting and indefensible.

But if the facts don’t care about my feelings the stats and legal framework drives a coach and horses through arguments if people trying to justify this.

@DuncinToffee A lesson to learn there, don't pander to the far right

No, don't pander to the far left who want to invite the world and his dog.

The Dutch government was a coalition between 4 parties, ranging from centrist to right wing. There hasn’t been a left wing Dutch PM in more than 20 years.

What ‘pandering to the far left’ do you consider has occurred?

If you view Jenrick as being just a little right of centre, then rather a lot looks far left.

@Eveninginparis so that website doesn't treat 'Holland' and the Netherlands as separate countries. Therefore you produced that howler all by yourself. Well done.

pointythings · 11/07/2023 20:03

Also what's interesting about the source @Eveninginparis quoted is the substantial difference in population difference between the UK and the country above it (Belgium). Belgium is 28% more densely populated than the UK. The Netherlands are 27% more densely populated than Belgium. Population density in the Netherlands is a shade under twice as great as it is in the UK. Comparing them as if they're clustered closely together in terms of population density is therefore disingenuous.

That 2020 website doesn't mention Holland, so I don't know what you're talking about.

There are 1/4 million empty homes in the UK and 3/4 million 2nd homes, so certainly there is enough housing to take far more refugees.

France has over 3 million second homes - more room over there.

I am frankly shocked by how few refugees some countries with lower population density that the UK take. Take a look for example at the Faroe islands, Scotland and Iceland. Shocking.

And why do you think that is?

cakeorwine · 11/07/2023 20:07

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 19:53

@cakeorwine But when we have 35 million refugees in the world, 108 million displaced people, it's only right that the world should take a look at that and see what can be done.

Why?

It is a duty of a government to protect it's citizens. If they can't do that than why is it the responsibility of other to do that?

Look what happened when Tony Blair (acting as Bush's poodle) decided he was going to save the people of Iraq. They went in mob-handed, blew most of the country to $h!£-rags and destabilised the entire Middle East.

It is a duty of a government to protect it's citizens. If they can't do that than why is it the responsibility of other to do that

That's an interesting view.
What do we owe to each other?

pointythings · 11/07/2023 20:09

We are the third most densely populated country in Europe (first is Holland, then Netherlands)

It was you who quoted Holland as a separate country. Right here (see above). In your post. Which was incorrect for all the reasons stated above by posters with a better grasp of European geography.

Clavinova · 11/07/2023 20:13

I guess we should send more refugees to Scotland;

As of 2021, the population density for the United Kingdom was 276 people per square kilometre, with London having by far the highest number of people per square km, at 5,596 people per square km. Of the countries which make up the United Kingdom, England the most densely populated at 434 people per square kilometre. Scotland, by contrast, is the most sparsely populated country in the United Kingdom, with only 70 people per square kilometre.

Indeed, it is an outrage that Scotland, Norway and Antartica are not taking more refugees, thank you for your cutnpastova that makes my point for me.

Look at how few refugees Greenland takes, shocking.

Robert Jenrick, Minister of State for Immigration. Is that you? Is it your instruction?

And yes as I said this level of cruelty does make me emotional.

At least you're calling people refugees.

I do have no doubt that some people are economic migrants. No doubt at all. I can't blame people for wanting to try to leave some countries behind.

I have no doubt some people are fleeing the effects of climate change. Crop failure, drought etc brought on by manmade climate change.

I have no doubt many are fleeing persecution, war, crackdown, violence.

I also have no doubt that most stay near the country they came from.

I watched Evacuation, If you didn't watch it, I would recommend it. It's about the fall of Kabul. You could see the terror, the fear and people who would do anything to flee a regime.

We are lucky in this country. We haven't had to flee our homes, people haven't wanted to flee because of the Government cracking down on us. We haven't had to leave and go to another country, only to be told that we are not welcome here.

I don't know how many people we should take, but I do know that in comparison to some other countries and in comparison to the numbers out there, we seem to be being very heartless and getting upset by the tiny proportion who try to come here.

Despite what Jenrick claims, Scotland is already taking their fair share
