Who buys this stuff? Who supports this dangerous industry?

It's everywhere here, they play it in the supermarkets, on the radio, blaring out of the clubs at all hours of the day and night.

Sorry. Had to get it off my chest. It's driving me insane.

"Dangerous industry"? Sorry, I don't understand?

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 16:47

do you live in texas? or norfolk?

why is it dangerous?

mamsnet · 24/06/2010 16:48

Dangerous????

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 16:49

Dangerous to my ears.

No, I live in the Caribbean. For some reason they are obsessed with Country and Western.

Maybe Dolly Parton's boobs go out on their own and attack people?

mamsnet · 24/06/2010 16:52

My Dad played it in the car when we were kids and I have a strange nostalgic fondness for it...

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 16:54

I wish you could hear what I am hearing, it's whiney and repetitive and....well....twangy. It doesn't help that someone near me is singing along to it.....

YADBU!

How can you hate a genre that gave us Dolly Parton and song titles such as:

I Don't Know Whether to Kill Myself or Go Bowling

Or

I Wouldn't Take her to a Dog Fight Coz I'm Pretty Sure She'd Win

Or what about

I Hate Every Bone In Your Body Apart from Mine

What's not to LOVE?!

YeahBut · 24/06/2010 16:56

YANBU

ShirleyKnot · 24/06/2010 16:57

Even Dolly?

You can't hate Dolly, man, you just can't.

(my alarm clock wakes me up every morning with 9-5)

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 16:59

Every musical genre has a few gems and maybe Dolly is the gem of the C&W world.

BUT the rest of it is AWFUL. I'm not sure if she's classed as country and western but they love Celine Dion here too. I just want to put down my shopping and leave the supermarket every time I hear her.

SirBoobAlot · 24/06/2010 17:01

Oh, and YABU. I love a bit of Country music

ifancyashandy · 24/06/2010 17:04

I hear ya ShirleyKnot, I hear ya.

Any woman who who comes out with gems such as 'it cost a lot of money to look this cheap' and said 'I've haven't dared look at my own thighs without lycra since 1973' is a GODDESS

I want to be Dolly.

lazarusb · 24/06/2010 17:05

Johnny Cash ruined my favourite song...but I do love 'Jolene'

5DollarShake · 24/06/2010 17:07

To be fair, YANBU when it comes to Celine, but nobody can hate on the Dolly.

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 17:08

but ifancyashandy - do you actually like the music or do you just like the song titles and the, err, rhinestone "look"?

OP posts:
strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 17:09

lazarsub - what's your favourite song? I actually don't mind Johnny Cash (shamefully going back on all my earlier posts)

OP posts:
singsinthebath · 24/06/2010 17:17

YANBU - it's all whining and drawling, dull melodies and cliched lyrics.

Can we add folk music to the list too.
And bagpipes.

ifancyashandy · 24/06/2010 17:22

I like some of the music and have been to see Dolly in concert!

But I'm more of a Cowboy Junkies fan - that kind of C&W. But I do also have bloody loads some Dolly on the ol' Ipod and would lurve to go to the Grand Ol' Oprey!

Am also a bit partial to some Lorretta Lynne and Patsy Cline too.

(I don't actually wear the clothes. Just have a bit of a softspot for a checked shirt and jeans combo!

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 17:25

I also hate the dancing that goes with it - what do they call it, line dancing? Yee haw.

Yes we can add bagpipes for sure. And folk music, although I don't hear enough of it to get too irritated by it.

lazarusb · 24/06/2010 17:26

Stranded- my favourite song is 'Hurt' by NIN. That song has such strong emotional connections for me and has got me through some really tough times. Nowadays I listen to it to remind myself how far I've come, I absolutely love it, it always makes me cry, especially so live.

bintofbohemia · 24/06/2010 17:27

YANBU and I haven't even read the op.

CheerfulYank · 24/06/2010 17:39

YANBU to dislike it yourself, but I personally looovee it. Tis very big in my little town.

ifancyashandy · 24/06/2010 17:41

ps. I also like cooler music too!

ShadeofViolet · 24/06/2010 17:41

YABU - I love a bit of Kenny Rogers
