Who buys this stuff? Who supports this dangerous industry?

It's everywhere here, they play it in the supermarkets, on the radio, blaring out of the clubs at all hours of the day and night.

Sorry. Had to get it off my chest. It's driving me insane.

Johnny Cash is brilliant. Boy Named Sue is brilliant. Hurt is brilliant. It's all just brilliant.

And whoever mentione the Old Crow Medicine Show is brilliant too.

I'm a crusty ol' folkie. And yah boo sucks to anybody not evolved enough to appreciate it.

And until you've heard Everlast do Folsom Prison Blues you haven't lived.

Ok I will admit there is probably some good country and western music.

But I am not talking about the classics. I am talking about the awful whiney twangy stuff that is churned out to satisfy what is presumably a verylarge listening public in certain states of the USA. And, it seems, the whole of the eastern Caribbean.

It is awful. I don't care what you say

peoplecrunchingcelery now musicals, I am ashamed to admit , I do like. Especially Evita, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, Joseph....

...here we go "Bless my Beautiful Hide..."

YANBU. You can love, like, hate whatever musical genre you care to choose.

I happen to have a soft spot for Willie Nelson, but will, out of respect, not put it on at a party if the OP is invited.

I have nothing against any other Johnny Cash song- just that he destroyed Hurt imo. I bloody love Nine Inch Nails whatever label anyone sticks on them.

lamplighter · 25/06/2010 13:56

I would challenge anyone not to listen to Nobody's Child and not cry - if you didn't feel a slight moistness you must be made of stone or dead!

Blind orphans etc - get me every time.

There is also a song called TeddyBear about a crippled boy who father has died and his mother is poor and he is lonely and did I mention crippled? Yep he is crippled lonely AND poor

Or "Jeannie is Scared of the Dark about the mother who puts a lantern on her little daughter's grave because she knows that "Jeannie is scared of the Dark"

Or the classic "Take Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth Because I am Kissing You Goodbye?"

Yep you are right OP - it is shite!

I'm a massive fan of 'old' country - Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and, of course, Dolly! Not such a fan of the new stuff. My sister, however, is OBSESSED by bloom Tim McGraw!

Earlybird · 25/06/2010 14:41

bint - that song title list is hilarious, but sorry to inform you (and anyone else who is interested), the list is largely fictional. Sorry to burst your bubble!

Perhaps only 10% of the songs listed are legitimate country music song titles. The rest are jokes or amateur attempts written by someone's deluded Uncle Vern sitting in his pickup truck in the Walmart parking lot.

Country music can be corny, and it is definitely fun to poke fun at the stereotype. But like most anything, the stereotype has little to do with reality.

Poignant lyrics, beautiful vocals, and wistful message, try Trisha Yearwood 'Georgia Rain'.

If you want something beautiful with stunning guitar and wistful lyrics that will take you right back to what it feels like to have a first love/summer romance, try Keith Urban's song 'Til summer comes around'.

f you want to laugh, listen to something that was a fairly recent hit, try Big and Rich 'Save a Horse, ride a cowboy'. The video is completely tongue-in-cheek, and is filled with all the country cliches you could ever want. The lyrics are worth deciphering, if you like stereotypes and country jokes. A great redneck party song:

Yes, sad to inform you of the truth.

Anyone have any comments on the links/songs I posted? Please ignore the brief adverts that play before the song begins....
