Who buys this stuff? Who supports this dangerous industry?

It's everywhere here, they play it in the supermarkets, on the radio, blaring out of the clubs at all hours of the day and night.

Sorry. Had to get it off my chest. It's driving me insane.

blimey, trying to think what i would ask dolly

ifancyashandy · 24/06/2010 22:46

'How do you stay so fabulous' and then just sit and drool at her words of wisdom!

CarmenSanDiego · 24/06/2010 22:48

YANBU. It's awful.

However, my 6yo dd adores it. She discovered country radio a few weeks ago and listens to it at night and it soothes her off to sleep which is great as bedtimes haven't always been easy.

The downside of this is that last night, I was sitting on her bed, chatting and she stopped me. "Mummy, I love this song!"

She pauses then sings along with the chorus, "And I love whisky... whisky makes my baby a little frisky"

She's going to sing this at summer camp and get me into trouble, isn't she?

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 22:48

she is bouyant

MillyR · 24/06/2010 23:00

Don't you even like Bluegrass? Or cosmic country? Or Deliverance?

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 23:01

wtf is cosmic country?

MillyR · 24/06/2010 23:02

It is a bit like psychedelic folk.

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 23:03

oh and that is like?

scanty · 24/06/2010 23:06

YABU - not read whole thread but come on - you can't go wrong with a bit of Dolly or Johnny - 'My name is Sue, how do you do?'!!!!

midnightexpress · 24/06/2010 23:10

YADBU, for most of the artists already mentioned, especially Johnny Cash, but also for Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch and the Old Crow Medicine Show, all of whom are sublime singer-songwriters.

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 23:11

i like the 'it's 5 oclock somewhere' song

larks35 · 24/06/2010 23:22

YABU - am not a C&W fan as such but oh lordy who can resist Jolene

scanty · 24/06/2010 23:25

"When we were younger there were so many of us living all together, boys and girls. We had to wash in front of the boys so i'd wash all the way down to decency. Then i'd wash up as far as decency.....Then i'd quickly wash decency...."

Susan shocks On - absolutely fabulous! How can you NOT love Dolly?

larks35 · 24/06/2010 23:28

Listen to this OP Boy Named Sue

larks35 · 24/06/2010 23:29

thanks scanty for reminding me of this classic!

midnightexpress · 24/06/2010 23:29

Larks, Dolly is rocking that pink jumpsuit! . Ah, the days when real women had stomachs...

midnightexpress · 24/06/2010 23:31

OP, you can't possibly not love this

larks35 · 24/06/2010 23:38

nice one midnight, I'd forgotton how good Johnny Cash was! I'm liking this C&W thread! Sorry OP. Let us Walk the Line

strandedatsea · 24/06/2010 23:45

Oh no what have I done? You're all supposed to come on here and agree with me, not start converting the whole of MN to C&W music, starting with getting Dolly Parton on for a live webchat...help, I apologise. I really do.

Mind you I do like Walk the Line but perhaps that's only because it was a cool movie and everyone looked good in it.

Unquietdad - you might be onto something with the rap/country crossover. Here, though, it would have to be Soca/country crossover. They'd LOVE it.

Q. How many Country and Western singers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Five, One to change the light bulb and Four to sing about the old one

Q. What happens when you sing Country and Western music backwards?
A. You get your wife and your job back.

Remember, Country & Western was invented to make Morris dancing look cool.

scanty · 25/06/2010 00:06

your welcome Larks! Johnny rocks, especially with Sue at San Quentin. You know, I have a terrible relationship with my dad, but he gave me C&W and JOHNNY CASH!

Henny1995 · 25/06/2010 00:10

Sorry! Not dangerous at all. A guy singing about how he loves a girl and vice versa. Stuff of lovesongs. Chill and enjoy. Check out Billy Ray Cyrus - he's fit!

bintofbohemia · 25/06/2010 08:11

Billy Ray Cyrus?!!

(Any fans of Bill Hicks ever hear his sketch re Billy Ray Cyrus? He was not a fan...))

Bintofbohemia - good on you for having a quick listen - each to her own. I guess there was a time when liking folk music was just 'liking music'. I'm all for choice. Now, shall we talk about Musicals?
