Buzzybb, like the analogy. Have just asked Dh who he's supporting and he says Spain . Reckoned he couldn't find the house tonight as the England flag confused him. I hate football, can't stand it quite frankly but I find this ABE attitude both amusing and annoying. Marrying a Scot certainly opened my eyes that's for sure. DH says the Scotland team may be shite but they know they are whereas the English team think they can win .

sweetkitty · 11/06/2010 21:56

I'm Scottish but am supporting Italy to win the World Cup as I am also half Italian and lets face it their squad is rather pleasing on the eye

Not supporting England as such but want to see them do well.

Lived in England for 8 years and most of the banter was gentle teasing, most English people I met loved Scotland and couldn't get the anti English thing that is common up here.

mozette · 11/06/2010 21:58

Scotland has its own legal system, education system, as for the why devolution - from wikipedia

Devolution for Scotland was justified on the basis that it would make government more responsive to the wishes of the people of Scotland. It was argued that the population of Scotland felt detached from the Westminster government (largely because of the policies of the Conservative governments led by Margaret Thatcher and John Major[5])

See it IS all the Tories fault!

Macdog · 11/06/2010 22:00

Crazycatlady I was trying to make the point that the Scotland/England arguments would stand up equally well for England v France/Germany where the English appear to be more than able to dish out casual racism as well as anyone, no?

Why don't England campaign for their own National Anthem and seek an identity separate from the UK in footballing and sporting matters?

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 22:02

Oh ha ha! So whoever said that up on page 4 or whatever had it spot on

But devolution was introduced by a Labour government, which I just don't get, given that Scotland (and Wales) are strong Labour territories.

Can I blame Tony Blair?

mozette · 11/06/2010 22:02

Thanks macdog - I'll have a glass if it is white wine

IveStillGotIt · 11/06/2010 22:02

willowstar- Im in Aberdeen too!!!
My little sisters DP's gran used to own a pub, and they support England, as sis DP is half English.
My sister and Dp are cheering on England.
And so am I cause we're all British at the end of the day!!!

mozette · 11/06/2010 22:04

You blame Tony and the whole of Scotland can blame Maggie

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 22:05

There are campaigns running for an English national anthem.

I agree with you on the casual racism comment, but you'd never see an England supporter in an 'Anyone but France' t-shirt, or an 'Anyone but Scotland' t-shirt for that matter.

And comments aimed at French/German teams/culture are often meant in jest (not that this makes them right) - a bit like the 'Les Rosbifs' ribbing we get from the French. This is different from outright hatred and loud complaining about 'English attitudes'.

Macdog · 11/06/2010 22:05
FranSanDisco · 11/06/2010 22:06

Please don't make us have our own national anthem, nobody knows the words to the one we've got.

Macdog · 11/06/2010 22:07

"And comments aimed at French/German teams/culture are often meant in jest (not that this makes them right) - a bit like the 'Les Rosbifs' ribbing we get from the French. This is different from outright hatred and loud complaining about 'English attitudes'.".....er no, it isn't.

'Anyone but England' started as a light-hearted jest

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 22:08

I'm no expert on politics but I'd say we can blame Maggie for devolution. It was always going to be a stretch asking Scots to accept a gvt that something like 5 of them had actually voted for.

I'm a bit meh about the whole devolution thing now that we're all centre left-ish anyway, but growing up in the 80's it felt like an urgent need to be addressed.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 22:15

Didn't the Scottish national movement start back in the 1920s though? I'm confused. I need to read more about it but it's too late and I'm tired.

macdog you have the right idea with the wine - here's a glass

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 22:17

Excuse my ignorance but isn't Jerusalem an English anthem of sorts?

I may seem a bit ABE in attitude but I love that song. Wish it was ours. I think I only heard it for the first time at Lady Di's funeral.

If I was English I'd sing it every day, with my hand over my heart.

Bring me my sword!

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 22:18

Yes sort of, very unofficially. It would make a great anthem. We had it at our wedding, along with a Welsh and a Scottish hymn (DH and I met in Wales, and his family are Scottish, mine English). Twas brilliant.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 22:22

If I ever get married I'm having it too. Well, I have been on a day trip to York

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 22:24

if i ever marry i will have "who's sorry now"

BitOfFun · 11/06/2010 22:41

I'm English, and not particularly enthusiastic about supporting England actually- mainly because of the tedious 1966 stuff the media trots out, I suppose. i would probably find it even more tiresome if I was Scottish. They can support who they like- I don't see why they have to default to England. To make a point of being anti-English makes them look rather mean-spirited though.

I'm a Liverpool supporter, DP is an Evertonian. And we do stick up for the other's team if they are playing someone else. Generally there is a friendly rivalry in Merseyside- it's not like Glasgow.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 22:44

If everton were playing at the bottom of my garden,i?d shut the curtains.
