snooping on my mumsnet

soooo pissed off right now.
have been informed by my brother that his missus has been having a gander at my messages on mumsnet.
i am like 'how can she do that when she doesnt know my password'?
he explained that all she did was type in my nickname on yahoo search, that she did know because we have chatted on here before, then mumsnet and voila, it took her to every conversation and message ive written
i was gobsmacked...to say the laest.
what is the point of having a password if any tom dick and harry can get in so easily?
god...even facebook is safer!!!!

Well anyone can do that I think.. logging in just gives you the opportunity to post and look at profiles etc.

The nick name itself is not any kind of protection I am afraid.

Why is she looking do you think?

Isn't that why people name-change so often? As soon as anyone knows your user name they can just use the search facility on mumsnet and find everything you have ever posted.... So I know that you only started posting yesterday - or have you just changed your name?

I never post anything I don't want someone in RL to know about under this name (I think my sister knows my posting name, as does DH)

i suddenley feel like i am in george orwells 1984 novel, be careful what you think!
what my point is, is that, yes i could type someones name such as annie smith + facebook + messages, right? but all this does is take me to the log in page, it does not take me to all their messages, does it?
i just assumed that if someone typed me then mumsnet it would take them to log in page, where they would have to know my password to read my stuff.
also, everyone i know knows my nickname...have had it since school...christ even my mum knows it! and even if i do change my name now...the other stuff is still there for anyone to read.

also, no i have not namechanged, or written anything nasty...dont think so anyway.
but its the principle .surely a password is there for a reason?

The difference is that this person knows her it's not the same as strangers looking up her history. I imagine the OP feels violated.

It's so easy to search everyones posts though. I realised I 'knew' someone on here just this week by their username being their rl name, and a quick search confirmed my suspicions were right

Why should people need your password to see what posts you have written? The threads you have posted on are public, for all to see. How on earth did you think people would need to know your password to read your posts? How would that work? This is a forum, not an online diary!

the password is to allow you to post under a username, otherwise we'd all just be 'anon'.
That really should ahve been clear to you before - how did you find MN? Did you not read some threads before registering?

On facebook you need to approve each and every 'friend' (*assuming you have your settings as protected) but it is very different on a public forum.

Think of posting here as broadcasting a radio show - everything you say can be heard, if you don't want the words to be linked to you then you need to use a name/voice people won't identify as you.

I think you have to be registered to use search, but I understood from your OP that she was registered? (Its easy enough to do anyway).
Its not a private type of site, if you're determined enough most places on the internet aren't. (As far as I know - I'm not a mad stalker or anything!)

anyone who is a member can click here type in your user name and see all your posts.

Where does your password come into it? She does not need your password. She only needs to be a member herself to use search.
