snooping on my mumsnet

mophead5 · 06/06/2010 20:20

soooo pissed off right now.
have been informed by my brother that his missus has been having a gander at my messages on mumsnet.
i am like 'how can she do that when she doesnt know my password'?
he explained that all she did was type in my nickname on yahoo search, that she did know because we have chatted on here before, then mumsnet and voila, it took her to every conversation and message ive written
i was gobsmacked...to say the laest.
what is the point of having a password if any tom dick and harry can get in so easily?
god...even facebook is safer!!!!

why can anybody read mumsnet...but facebook is private...thought mumsnet was , to the same extent as facebook, relatively private regarding messages and such

OP posts:
HecateQueenOfWitches · 06/06/2010 20:47

no. Mumsnet is not private. When you very first found it you could read it, couldn't you? Log out - you can still read all the topics and threads. It's not private at all and never has been.

Is this the first forum you've used?

The majority of forums can be seen by anyone. You have to register in order to post but even non members can read them. It's the norm.

QSnondomicile · 06/06/2010 20:48

I dont have your password. I can read your post.

I dont understand how you can not have understood this!

KurriKurri · 06/06/2010 20:48

Because Facebook is not a forum its a social networking site.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 06/06/2010 20:48

you don't have my password.

You are reading my posts.

Tn0g · 06/06/2010 20:49

It's a public forum on the world wide web.

That's why I post twaddle and don't tell people my username in rl.

mophead5 · 06/06/2010 20:50

no no no no no youre getting me all wrong her.
ok, i have done this myself earlier today to check it out.
all i did was went on yahoo search, typed in my mane, then mumsnet, then it went STRAIGHT to my messages sent...i did not have to log in or anything like that.
i dont mind one bit that other members on mumsnet can read my stuff...like you say, thats what its for. its the fact that the 'outside world' ie non members can do this.

OP posts:
lifeissweet · 06/06/2010 20:51

erm..

This is why people keep their usernames quiet and change names when they want to say something sensitive. Even if you believed that people need to sign in to look at your messages did you not think that people you know could register and see all your messages anyway.

plus...do you know anyone else's password? No. Can you see their posts? yes.

I am so baffled.

MathsMadMummy · 06/06/2010 20:51

can I just point out that your SIL must be a bit of a loser to think snooping through somebody else's posts is a good use of time?! it's quite lame isn't it?

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 20:52

But most forums can be read by non members ...did you not know this

LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2010 20:52

We get it.We're just saying that it's normal. That's generally how forums work. There are some which you have to register with to even read the messages but those aren't very common.

PuzzleRocks · 06/06/2010 20:52

I'm sorry. I shouldn't laugh but

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 20:53

and

mophead5 · 06/06/2010 20:53

whats all this change name stuff.
why do you have to cahange names on a regular basis
oh and yes this is the first doodaa forum thingy ive done

OP posts:
LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2010 20:53

Welcome to the internet.

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 20:54

Just change your name...tell no one

HecateQueenOfWitches · 06/06/2010 20:54

Well I've just tried exactly that and got the message "We did not find results for: mophead5 mumsnet. Try the suggestions below or type a new query above."

LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2010 20:55

You don't have to change names reguarly but if you're worried that friends, relatives, colleagues etc will recognise you from details you post here, then you may wish to do so in order to minimise the chances of that happening.

mophead5 · 06/06/2010 20:56

basically, what youre all telling me is, dont post anything you wouldnt want your husband to read!
shit, there was me thinking i could tell all!!!!

OP posts:
MizDemeanor · 06/06/2010 20:57

Bless you Mophead I have been a member for years and change my nickname every so often. Anyone can read what you have written on here luvvie.

SPBHatesFootball · 06/06/2010 20:58

didn't really work for me
is this what you meant?

LetThereBeRock · 06/06/2010 20:58

No what we're saying is don't give out your username, and if you have then change it.

People often do post here specifically to say things they can't/wouldn't say to their partners. It's fine to do so,so long as you take a few basic precautions e.g not sharing your username.

usualsuspect · 06/06/2010 20:58

Oh mophead never tell your husband your username
