Rarely watch adverts but we left the prog running after watching it before moving onto the next one recorded and caught the new Birds Eye advert for fish fingers...

...is it me or is that polar bear frightenly close to sounding like an abusive husband?

"lets stick to what we know shall we? Oh and Fiona... I'm watching you."

Ann AIBU to think the whole advert is just plain WRONG!?

The polar bear scares me.

brimfull · 31/05/2010 23:20

yes
tis very creepy voice
too weird and creepy to be funny which I think it's meant to be

BusyMissIzzy · 31/05/2010 23:28

Between those ones, the Travelodge ones with the threatening teddy bear gang, and the Foxes Bisquits Mafia panda, I'm starting to distrust bears entirely.

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 23:38

I'd hate to watch it at 4am suffering from insomnia...

streakybacon · 01/06/2010 08:04

We love it, it's creepy but then so is a lot of dark humour. It's like Alfred Hitchcock with peas.

SixtyFootDoll · 01/06/2010 08:06

I know he is very intimidating.
Cant think it is sending people out in droves to buy the product.

But then we are talking about it....

MrsChemist · 01/06/2010 08:06

Pmsl 'Alfred Hitchcock with peas'

It is a bit weird though.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 08:47

Yeah, I know, no such thing as bad publicity but honestly is a polar bear based on an abusive husband really the sort of image this company should have? I may be talking about it but I'm not buying it.

DrZeus · 01/06/2010 08:53

Bring back Captain Birdseye, I say. Oops, showing my age now!

southeastastra · 01/06/2010 09:23

it's funny! i can't see the abusive husband thing

strawberrycake · 01/06/2010 10:16

It is freaky! Threatening her from the freezer. Even DH picked up on it.

Southwestwhippet · 01/06/2010 10:19

I hate that bear, freaks me out and makes me afraid to open my own freezer incase he is sitting (I have own-brand frozen peas in my freezer [gulp])

RockRose · 01/06/2010 10:20

What is that horrible advert with all the people carrying their heads around. It is vile.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 11:36

Which Captain Birdseye though? The nice old grandad figure, the creepy paedo guy or the hunk gratuitously put in to appeal to mums and gay men?

You can't see the abusive husband thing? The bear uses a threatening but oh so reasonable tone and ends it with "I'll be watching"

OP posts:
southeastastra · 01/06/2010 12:28

lordy i think it's meant to be 'funny' you're really looking to far into this

do you also object to the 'hard' bears in the hotel chain ad ?

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 12:42

No idea WTF you are talking about with the hotel ads, like I said I avoid adverts where possible. I did not have to think about this too much or anything like that this was a first impression. It is not funny it is sick and threatening.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 01/06/2010 12:44

blimey calm down dear

Doodleydoo · 01/06/2010 12:47

Bear cute, creepy creepy voice and don't buy them generally anywhere but I can see where you are coming from with it!

ginnny · 01/06/2010 12:48

I really do not like the polar bear - I have an urge to slam the door on its head whenever I see that advert.
Not sure its like an abusive husband though, just extremely annoying.

confuddledDOTcom · 01/06/2010 12:58

Yeah, that ad is wrong!

Travelodge bears

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 15:21

"Dear"! If I'd even considered saying that to any of the ladies on here I would have been rightfully run off the site for being a patronising man and I'd have never been welcome back again.

I am perfectly calm thank you very much or at least I was until you patronised me.

Thank you for posting the Travel bears Confuddle. Not a particularly great advert but it is at least positive, the bears are trying to get the best night's sleep for the customers. The Birds Eye one is threatening.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 01/06/2010 15:31

oh so starting your post to me as 'no idea wtf you are talking about' wasn't meant to come across as patrionising either!

oh and if you still feel threatened by a teddy bear puppet in a freezer you can complain to advertising standards. hth

2blessed2bstressed · 01/06/2010 15:34

The polar bear is voiced by Willem Dafoe - in real life is slightly threatening also, but my kids (older maybe at 9 and 12) think the ads are funny

PrivetDancer · 01/06/2010 15:38

I think it's funny, I can't believe you are seriously saying it's like an abusive husband?! It's a fucking polar bear in a freezer! Advertising peas ffs!
