Rarely watch adverts but we left the prog running after watching it before moving onto the next one recorded and caught the new Birds Eye advert for fish fingers...

...is it me or is that polar bear frightenly close to sounding like an abusive husband?

"lets stick to what we know shall we? Oh and Fiona... I'm watching you."

Ann AIBU to think the whole advert is just plain WRONG!?

No it was supposed to mean "I don't know WTF you are talking about". What else could it have meant? I also clarified by saying I don't watch many adverts as was also said in the original post. I'm afraid I can't see anything there to explain your extremely rude and patronising attitude.

It isn't advertising peas it is advertising fish fingers (in the advert I saw). How on Earth could the gentle tap on the box and the whole superior attitude and the sheer terror on the woman's face alongside "I'll be watching you" be seen as funny in the slightest?

PrivetDancer · 01/06/2010 15:55

You're weird.

MNHubbie · 01/06/2010 15:58

And you are insulting. It is clear I am not alone in finding this disturbing. I appreciate people can interpret things differently but it doesn't matter that it is a puppet. What if it had been a drunk man with the same script?

Gigantaur · 01/06/2010 15:58

I don't like it and i agree with you hubby.

I can just see some abusive twunt using such tone and language to his partner.

I can't see whats funny about it

Longtalljosie · 01/06/2010 16:02

There's a peas one and a fish fingers one. I saw the peas one first - that one's much more subtley threatening. The fish fingers one is more overt.

YANBU - I can't understand why having women scared of their own freezer is a good idea...

nannyj · 01/06/2010 16:04

Was just about to post that I thought the woice was Willem Dafoe. It is creepy but I think it's funny, more so the look on the peoples faces.

A stuffed polar is like an abusive husband? Really?

Longtalljosie · 01/06/2010 20:17

Actually, the words are like an abusive husband. That's the point.

SixtyFootDoll · 01/06/2010 22:28

It is very chilling.

fulltimeworkingmum · 01/06/2010 22:41

Sorry, I think they are rather funny and not remotely threatening - a stuffed bear in a freezer compartment... weird, yes but scary?

TheLittleActress · 02/06/2010 19:20

I cannot believe that a grown man feels threatened by a TV commercial. That's not mentioning that the star of the commercial is a toy.

There're very peculiar individuals in this world...

ceilidhknco · 07/11/2010 10:46

Well what about the one where the bear is talking to Clive? Clive's a guy....

I think you're over thinking this a bit too much. It's a bear, in a freezer advertising prawns, chicken, peas, fish fingers etc. The kids find it hilarious, so do I to be honest. And in reference to the look of "sheer terror", well if you went to your freezer and found a talking, stuffed polar bear in there, wouldn't you be a little bit confused?

shimmerysilversparkler · 07/11/2010 10:48

My kids absolutely LOVE those adverts, to the point where the record them when they come on.

YunoYurbubson · 07/11/2010 10:58

I'm with you OP. It is a play on threat and domination in a domestic setting. To sell peas and frozen fish.

c0rns1lk · 07/11/2010 11:01

It'll take more than an alpha polar bear to convince me to buy fish fingers.

Mumcentreplus · 07/11/2010 11:03

I don't like those ads either!!! they are creepy...
I always inmagine if I opened the freezer and that bluddy bear was in there I'd drag him out and throw him out the front door..Threatening people in their own freezer just isn't on!! Grin

passionberry · 07/11/2010 11:03

It's a mafia polar bear isn't it? So the joke is that he's "advising" her to use Birdseye products in a subtly threatening manner like Tony Soprano "advising" a business owner to use his security services or whatever?

It's funny!

Lol at "sheer terror" - it's a freezer sized polar bear!

Mumcentreplus · 07/11/2010 11:06

I prefer Vinnie the 'Fox's Bis-quits' bear Grin

passionberry · 07/11/2010 11:08

Why are all advert bears Italian New York at the moment?

pointydog · 07/11/2010 11:09

I don't find them creepy, no.

But I hoot at that line about no one likes to prepare chicken. Get your hands dirty and cook proper, you buncha lily-livers, that's what I say.

pallymama · 07/11/2010 11:58

I don't find them creepy, they do make me laugh tho, especially the chicken one Blush "News flash Laura - Prawns!" :o

As for the "calm down dear" comment, was that not just a joke referencing the E-sure commercials? Sorry if thnis annoys, but some people just seem a bit oversensitive to me. Each to their own :)

Onetoomanycornettos · 07/11/2010 12:03

I don't feel threatened by it myself, but I did immediately think of domestic violence or those abusive children adverts in the way it was voiced, so YANBU.
