to leave DS alone in house while we go to pub?

Let me explain...

We are going on holiday with my parents and brother. We go every year and usually we camp but this year we're getting a house because DS 15months a bit young for camping (bad sleeper and noisy!). It's a tiny little village, v quiet, no crime ever as far as I know. The house has a garden, with a gate that leads onto road behind, where there is a pub.

Today my mum suggested that one night we could all go out together for a meal/drinks at the pub as it's so close we could take the baby monitor. The way things are positioned, it would be just like sitting out in the house garden, if the garden was a bit longer iyswim!

I'm not sure how I feel about this. She really sees no problem in it, we would obviously lock up the house, it would take barely a minute to get back if he woke (which he rarely does at that time), and anything untoward would be heard over the baby monitor. This all makes sense but a little thing in my mind is a bit [unsure emoticon]... I'm sure other nights we will stay in/BBQ, they will babysit so me and DH can go out, and we will stay in when they go out, but it would be nice to all go just one night.

It's not a big deal at all, she isn't going to get pissy or anything if we don't do it, but just wondering would you do it? Judge away

redredwine - do you really think what LVAV is proposing is the same as the mccann scenario? anyway, that's not the point really.

i see what you're saying LVAV and I think your last sentence sums up why there will always be 2 such divided camps on opinions on this issue.

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:02

Its not a cheap dig- its called learning from other peoples misfortune, your kids, your responsibility to keep them safe, leaving them in a house alone (not even their own house ffs) doesnt count as that really, lets be honest.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:04

snidey gratuitous digs about someone else heartache is a cheap shot.shame on you

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:04

Ermm she wants to piss off down the pub and leave her child at home- where is the difference exactly- oh god yes that amazing safety device known as a baby monitor why didnt I think of that when I needed a weekend away from my two.

LordVolAuVent · 31/05/2010 00:05

I'm sure the McCanns have been punished enough and couldn't care less about judgey little MNers opinions on them. Someone said it's just down to chance that a child left "unattended" doesn't suffer some horrible misery - it's not, it's down to "chance" if they do. The huge majority of the time they would be fine. The only person anyone on the outside of that hideous situation should be judging/bad mouthing is the abductor.

If you say so SM- they would probably tell anyone they wish they'd have stayed in/took their kids with them that night- other peoples heartache educating other people can only be a good thing lets be honest, who would want other parents to suffer the loss they have?

LJBrownie · 31/05/2010 00:06

getting a bit silly now - nobody's proposing a weekend away.

i'm off to bed and, call me neurotic, but i'll be plugging my baby monitor in for my 8 month old even though he's only on the floor above

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:06

shamless cheap snide shots at McCanns is nasty

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:07

So people who dont watch/care for their kids adequatley have no part in them coming to harm? Crap. Complete and utter, I think thats a cop out to make bad parents feel slightly less bad about how they have failed their children.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:07

habitual digging over someone else misfortune is nasty

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:08

SM- why dont you change the record if you have nothing else to contribute? Seriously

LJBrownie · 31/05/2010 00:08

do you think anything would make them feel any less bad about it? i doubt it.

YouCantTeuchThis · 31/05/2010 00:08

too much red red wine??

I hear ya SM

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:09

you keep making snide McCann comments i will keep refuting it

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:09

People usually learn from misfortune- be it that of their own or others, its called reflection. If it matters not a jot what could happen to your own children while you are doing what suits you then maybe you should have waited until you were ready to put your kids safety first before having them.

LordVolAuVent · 31/05/2010 00:10

Wind your neck in RedRedWine, I don't "want to piss off down the pub etc etc", it was a suggestion made by someone else. I stated from the beginning that I was uncomfortable with the idea. I have said I'm not desperate to go, nothing about wanting time away from my baby. All I've said, is I can see both sides and rationally it is v unlikely anything would happen and I'm not a naturally worried, paranoid person. I've also stated that I'm highly unlikely to do it as I wouldn't be able to live with myself if the unlikely did come to pass.

You are starting to get on my nerves with your poor interpretation of the facts and thinly veiled suggestions that I'm a crap parent.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:10

given you are by own admission "tiddled" does that explain your vitriol

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:11

Snide? What by pointing out the facts? they left their children alone while they enjoyed themselves and their child got abducted and no YouCantTeuchThis, Chablis actually dear

LordVolAuVent · 31/05/2010 00:12

It's not up to you RedRedWine to educate others using the McCanns misfortune, it's up to them if they wish to.

LJBrownie · 31/05/2010 00:12

drunk in charge of the kids?

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:12

are you always such a vile irascible drunk RRW

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:12

Vitriol? If being a responsible parent equals vitriol then yes, if you say so.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 00:13

clearly for you the wine talks the brain doesnt

RedOnHerHead · 31/05/2010 00:13

I left this thread long ago.
LVAV made her mind up.... lets not go on and on about it.

RedRedWine1980 · 31/05/2010 00:14

Nope- its a novel idea LJ, called staying at grandparents overnight, however maybe I should have just took the monitor down the pub and you guys would have been perfectly accepting
