I went to my local market the other day.

It has been infested with stalls selling silly little pink cakes for a £1 each.

Well "selling" is a misnomer here, it was more a case of a bored women standing behind a table with cakes on. Not much selling happening.

There were at least four stalls doing this.

Look, I'm all for women starting businesses etc but this is getting silly.

My world always needs more cake of any variety

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 13:38

Yummy, I always need more cupcakes! Mind you, I prefer my own homemade ones. was shocked to see individual cupcakes (nothing fancy) on sale in sefridges for £1.99 EACH! Bloody hell - who would pay that except Princess Beatrice or some rich airhead?

Firawla · 29/05/2010 13:39

They must be selling some though otherwise their business would have packed up already? doesn't really bother me

ClaireDeLoon · 29/05/2010 13:42

I'm with Katy, saw the thread title and thought my house could do with more cupcakes. But I shall make them myself. In a bit. When I can be bothered.

withorwithoutyou · 29/05/2010 13:43

I most be the only cake lover in the world who doesn't see the appeal of cupcakes.

There is too much icing on the top. Too much! It isn't nice.

Give me a chocolate muffin any day.

bowbluebell · 29/05/2010 13:51

Cupcakes are nice enough but I'd never, ever choose one over a Victoria sponge.

YANBU

There are too many people hawking cupcakes whose time could be better spent making Victoria sponges.

honeydragon · 29/05/2010 13:52

But if you can't be arsed to make them waitrose do swirly sparkley cupcakes for £0.59 or 2 for £1, and you can pick up a bottle of Pinot while you are there.

Hmmn Mumsnet business venture perhaps, cake and wine take away service?

sapell3 · 29/05/2010 13:58

YANBU. They are a fad at the moment, and far too expensive.

SeaTrek · 29/05/2010 14:44

YANBU

So last week!
This week: Cakepops!

Pikelit · 29/05/2010 15:23

YANBU. I hate cupcakes.
Fairy cakes are a different matter altogether, mind and I could eat them in disgraceful quantities.

MaryAnnSingleton · 29/05/2010 15:25

fairy cakes are for wimps
cupcakes rule and the more icing the better

muggglewump · 29/05/2010 15:27

They are naf.

What you need is whoopie pies
They are fab, though I fill with plain whipped cream, and top with melted chocolate

Alouiseg · 29/05/2010 15:28

Cupcakes are over. It's all about macaroons dontcha know

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 15:32

And apparently pronounced macarON if one is in the know. The diff between macaroons and cupcakes, sadly, is that any fule can have a bash at a cupcake whereas macaroons look HARD (to me anyway). Also, sadly I am egg and dairy free so can still make a decent cupcake whereas macaroons would be crap without egg.

Mugggs, are whoopie pies biscuity or cake? They look divinely sick-making and easily converted into dairy free so I may have a bash at those.

Pikelit · 29/05/2010 15:34

Wimps?!!

I foresee another trip to the car park. Not that you'll be a challenge, stuffed to the lardy gills with cupcakes!!

Pshaw!

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 15:34

Riven, I disagree. Fairy cakes are smaller, English and have glace icing. Cupcakes are larger, American and have butter icing.

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 15:36

Why don't we start an English fashion for sweet treats (nb I am not English by birth but live here now). Why don't the girls from SITC start a trend for Eccles cakes or something WHOLESOME!??

I agree with Riven.....

and also with the OP...I am sick to the back teeth of hearing about cupcakes. (don't get me wrong, I like stuffing my gob with any form of cake as much as the next lardarse, but I don't really understand this new craze of cupcaking as a topic of conversation....) (eeek, look, even I'm talking about the fecking things)

Pikelit · 29/05/2010 15:40

As a reminder....

these are fairy cakes

unlike these:

which are cupcakes

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 15:40

Well, the Americans have led the way in the trend towards obesity, so draw your own conclusions...

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 29/05/2010 15:42

No one with me on sitting with one's elegant chums sipping a cocktail and dining on an Eccles cake/ bara brith/ slice of barmbrack then?
