I went to my local market the other day.

It has been infested with stalls selling silly little pink cakes for a £1 each.

Well "selling" is a misnomer here, it was more a case of a bored women standing behind a table with cakes on. Not much selling happening.

There were at least four stalls doing this.

Look, I'm all for women starting businesses etc but this is getting silly.

YABU cupcakes make people happy [ie me, and my belly]
and the world [and mumsnet] needs to be a happier place!

if they sell, why the hell not? although if i had a cupcake buisness, i'd provide an alternative delicious overpriced bad-for-you treat for people who hate the sugary devils!

ClaireDeLoon · 29/05/2010 15:55

I like those currant buns with icing whatdoyoucallthems, where they have a cherry in the middle, but Eccles cakes are nice too. Not a clue about bara brith and barmcake though.

And chocolate eclairs.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 29/05/2010 21:03

Oh, and soap stalls.

Stop it, you are not Lush. You never will be.

Do something useful.

GRrRRR in a ranty mood today.

Whoopie cakes are now in fashion dontcha know and they are quite cake like with a little crunch on the outside if done right

geordieminx · 29/05/2010 21:09

I used to love farmers' markets, used to be able to get some really tasty stuff.

God, these days they are all pish. They all seem to be carbon copies of each other - nettle soap(wtf??), hippy dippy beaded necklaces 5 times the price of the highstreet, cupcakes, vacum-sealed meat and wax sealed cheese. Thats it. Never anythng different.

((yawn)))

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 29/05/2010 21:10

do they fart then? These whoopie cakes?

FourArms · 29/05/2010 21:22

Another whoopie recipe here. Might give them a go. They look beautiful!

TiggyD · 29/05/2010 21:23

I like my fairy cakes. Fresh out the oven, warm and with a little crunch on the top.

Lovecat · 29/05/2010 22:56

I made 3 batches of cupcakes today for our drama group's refreshment stall.

Chocolate cake, white chocolate ganache icing, chocolate curls and a giant Cadbury's button on top.

They sold out

YANBU - I was at my DS's annual football fun day a few weeks ago and there was a woman selling these. Even though she was doing a roaring trade, everyone in the queue was looking at each other quietly saying, are these cakes really £1 each?!

I agree about them having far too much icing... but my DCs loved em.

EveWasFramed10 · 30/05/2010 10:06

Cupcakes rock...and I am sorry, but buttercream frosting beats the pants off that watery sickly glaze any day of the week!

LetThereBeRock · 30/05/2010 10:06

I like soap stalls and cupcakes.

giraffesCANdriveAcar · 30/05/2010 10:17

Did anyone see junior apprentice? £2.20 for a feckin cake?!

LetThereBeRock · 30/05/2010 10:18

Was it a cupcake? Or a Victoria sponge or similar?

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 30/05/2010 10:20

I am sadly of the opinion that the more buttercream = the better

ChunkyBrewster · 30/05/2010 10:23

I'm confused as to the difference between fairy cakes and cupcakes?

LetThereBeRock · 30/05/2010 10:23

I love buttercream. It's best enjoyed with just a spoon and nothing else.

Inch thick icing is fine by me too though.

satc2bringiton · 30/05/2010 10:29

I love cupcakes - they are so pretty

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 30/05/2010 13:36

DocBunches it's an emperors new clothes situation - nobody wants to admit they are crap or that supposedly intelligent women are making tits of themselves getting excited over the bloody things.

5DollarShake · 30/05/2010 13:45

Cupcakes are bland. All style and no substance. Cake, in all its variations is inevitably much nicer AND bigger. What's not to love?

I do think that we will look back on the current fad for towering tiers of cupcakes in place of actual cakes for weddings as terribly dated in another 10 or 20 years time.

nagoo · 30/05/2010 14:32

ClaireDeLoon I assume you are thinking of a Belgian Bun. Like a chelsea bun but flatter and with icing on.

My god I'm so hungry.....

Fibilou · 30/05/2010 19:36

"It's all about macaroons dontcha know "

Oh my, I just love macarons. Especially the salted butter caramel ones from Ladurée

capstone · 30/05/2010 20:03

Macaroons are a bit flimsy as well though. Give me a nice stodgy iced bun any day

emptyshell · 30/05/2010 21:34

Cupcakes are the latest wedding craze - I don't like them, they seem to be the "fur coat and no knickers" cakes of the cake world to be honest - it's just a boring plain cake under all the sparkly icing, so a bit of a con. I think the craze will die down soon - and all the cupcake businesses seem to have been spurred on by Daily Mail articles about women who've baked their way to fortunes in their Agas while having children playing at their feet.

I also think carrot cake is pointless too - vegetables and cakes should never mix.

nancydrewrocks · 30/05/2010 21:48

I used to run a small business making cupcakes - people couldn't get enough of them and it always suprised me how impressed people were with something so simple but the fact is there a lot of people that cannot make a fairy cake let alone be bothered with the "faff" of icing them etc.

I used to make aprox 100 a week in various flavours - chocolate, double chocolate, lemon cheesecake, vanilla, strawberry shortcake - often with a filling.
