to be annoyed at the smugness of people living on a shoetsring

i probably am.
mumsnet is full at the moment of people going on about how little money we have and how wonderful we are. or at least it seems that way to me.
what so superior about that? and even more so if you are a single parent? unless you are a widow, you made a choice to be a single parent, knowing full well that meant less money. yes, i know that in some cases of domestic violence, its not really a choice, but, it seems that in most cases i have seen on mn, its simply a case of, 'not being happy' with the partner.
whatever, if it makes you happier, fine, but stop harping on about how skint you might be, and how other people have too much money.

rant over.

Oh, bold doesn't work in a link.
Still, the thermometer is good.

porcamiseria · 16/05/2010 19:16

YABU to slag off single parents! what have they done to you!!

YANBU however to note the slight weird attitude to money on here, some people can be a tad worthy about their lack of funds

cory · 16/05/2010 19:19

Yup, ninah. We're back in the 80s again. Next comes gay bashing.

Quattrocento · 16/05/2010 19:19

Just addressing the OP

Really don't think it is helpful for people in a time of financial crisis to be sniping at the other half and grumping about how the other half live. Time to pull together, I reckon.

LetThereBeRock · 16/05/2010 19:20

Which shop do you get the Karo syrup from Expat?

And should you use the light or dark syrup for pecan pie?

HerBeatitude · 16/05/2010 19:23

LOLOLOL at this thread.

I am a considerably better person than yow, OP.

Not really sure what you're trying to say. People should shut up about being skint? You're jealous of poor people? You're annoyed with lone parents? You think richer people have it harder? You're sick too? Or what?

What's the point?

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:25

im not skint but im tight as gnats chuff.good with money.so i love any canny money saving threads on mn

Jaquelinehyde · 16/05/2010 19:27

Oh my goodness, what a pathetic excuse for a human being you must be.

Theochris · 16/05/2010 19:30

I love tablet, scottishmummy any special recipe I should try to follow?

LetThereBeRock · 16/05/2010 19:31

I've never actually had pecan pie but I want to make it. I love pecans.

I've spent more time on this thread talking about food than I have the OP's post.

leavingonajetplane · 16/05/2010 19:31

Riven it is pointless contacting your MP about the lack of sweet things in your house. Did Dave bring cake when he came? Or even a packet of Nice biscuits? Cant trust a single one of 'em...

leavingonajetplane · 16/05/2010 19:41

See in the first sentence of your AIBU OP when you say "I probably am." You couldve stopped Right. There.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:46

Thanks, muggle. I have a thermometer somewhere. I don't much care for tablet, either, but DH and DD1 are mad for it.

LetThere, I get Karo, both light and dark, from a shop called Lupe Pinto's. There's one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh (the Glasgow one is larger).

I'll need to make a trial batch of this tablet before launching it as pressies.

I'm ace at curling ribbons and bows, though, to tie to pressies.

EdgarAllenPoll · 16/05/2010 19:47

hmmmmm baklava<

as you were.

BikeRunSki · 16/05/2010 19:47

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but there was an article in the Guardian yesterday called something like "How to Have a Bargain Baby" written by a girl who had kitted out her new (first, unborn) baby for less than £300 by using eBay, hand me downs etc. So far, so reasonable, but relatives bought her the car seat and pram - the big new baby expenses. The tone of the article was very smug and really annoyed me as hand-me downs, eBay (buying and selling) etc are a way of life for us, and we have no rich benefactors for the big expenses! I hope those relies are around for childcare later or then she'll really find out how babies can cost you money!

kissyfurschaos · 16/05/2010 19:48

yabu
I am a single mum working part time with a 2 year old. When he was 18 months we moved into private rental no3! Money is tight. This week I had to loan money off parents for a haircut (was urgent) parents have done a sainsburys shop for us, given ds some nappies and lent me £160 of ds's nursery fees. We have no gas on meter and wont have until at least friday. I have £10 in my purse and that will also have to cover bus fares.
I see no smugness is no bed of roses. Suffered a lot of abuse off DS father last year, had to press charges. Thankfully despite DS having behavioural problems I adore him. Love is free and if that is smug so be it.
I don't think you should judge unless you've walked in someone elses shoes, you sound quite bitter.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:49

Baklava is really nice, but I'm telling you, it is a PITA to make! My mum's Romanian friend does and she's got the patience of Job.

I'd rather buy it for sure.

Thankyou Expat.

Is light or dark better for pecan pie or are both equally good?

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:52

2lbs caster sugar

1/4lb butter

1 cup of whole milk

Tin of condensed milk

Teaspoon vanilla essence

  1. In a heavy based pan slowly melt sugar, milk and butter.you really have to melt all the sugar this is when their is no crunch felt when you stir it
  2. Once it comes to the boil add the condensed milk.
  3. Slowly bring to the boil again, stirring constantly.
  4. Still stirring carefully, boil for 15 minutes or until mixture darkens to a butterscotch colour.
5.To test if mixture has boiled for long enough drop a teaspoon full into a glass of cold water. If it?s ready it will form a ball that you can roll between your finger.soft and pliable
  1. Remove from heat and add vanilla essence.
7.Pour into a greased tin and cool and when nearly set eg wee bit of resistance but not too hard cut into squares.

took me ages to type that
8.Eat it

it so is
GOTCHA feels like the new tomorrow

noddyholder · 16/05/2010 19:53

what is tablet?

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:53

I use the dark one for pecan pie.

The recipe is on the label.

But here it is online as well.

So simple, so yummy.

Theochris · 16/05/2010 19:53

Bikerunski,

That article irritated me too, esp as I'm fairly sure that the quoted costs for raising a child at 9k a yr includes childcare (or lost earnings) and eventual university costs. So paying 300 quid out of stuff for your new born is neither here or there.

There are loads of these articles in the money pages, it really is money for old rope, I have never seen an original idea in any of them.
