to be annoyed at the smugness of people living on a shoetsring

i probably am.
mumsnet is full at the moment of people going on about how little money we have and how wonderful we are. or at least it seems that way to me.
what so superior about that? and even more so if you are a single parent? unless you are a widow, you made a choice to be a single parent, knowing full well that meant less money. yes, i know that in some cases of domestic violence, its not really a choice, but, it seems that in most cases i have seen on mn, its simply a case of, 'not being happy' with the partner.
whatever, if it makes you happier, fine, but stop harping on about how skint you might be, and how other people have too much money.

rant over.

tortoise - good post. That crystallises all my vague witterings on this thread. Being skint is scary and makes all the other stuff so much harder.

expatinscotland · 18/05/2010 15:41

Yes, it's a buttered pie tin. LOL.

Reminds me, I need to take some butter out to bake tonight.

I agree MrsBean

its all very well being on £55K but if you are paying a huge bloody mortgage you have often as much left at the end of the month as your mate in a HA house on less money

but, I would never ever dream of claiming to be poor either, just not "rich"

pagwatch · 18/05/2010 16:15

I am enjoyingthe juxtaposition of the cakeness and social inequality of the thread.

has anyone done anything Marie Antointte, Let them eat cake-ish yet?

Jenbot · 18/05/2010 16:37

I haven't read much of the thread but I got to the part where someone mentioned Riven's son saving up to buy tickets to pay for uni' visits.

(Someone else has probably said this but...) Universities often will pay rail fares if potential students can't afford it and have to attend for an interview. It would be worth calling and asking!

tortoiseonthehalfshell - agree re: first world problem, exactly.

And porca, absolutely, I don't for one second feel 'poor' but equally don't feel rich enough to obviate the odd moan about my lack of the holy grail third bedroom!

Valpollicella · 18/05/2010 16:55

Riv, is the house with the wisteria by the park?

whippybamboo · 18/05/2010 16:57

Don't understand why original poster is so annoyed?

EdgarAllenPoll · 18/05/2010 16:58

ah Riven, weapons-grade sponge is the standard product of this house.

and wrong flour is such an easy mistake to make....

nighbynight · 18/05/2010 16:59

Very strange OP. So people are having a hard time, and trying to make the best of it, and you resent that?

YABU.

op-your really not worthy of a reply let alone any obsenity, pond life has more of an IQ

Valpollicella · 18/05/2010 20:45

It was for sale about a month ago!

Lemme see if I can find the link again to the ad on the estate agents (if it's still on the market.)

As gorgeous inside as out!

I covet that house too.

Valpollicella · 18/05/2010 20:57

Dammit. Must have sold as it's been removed from the site. App it had 5 bedrooms!

Where'd you get your baklava from in She Bou Riven?

thumbwitch · 19/05/2010 00:12

oh Riven, that did make me smile - reminded me of the mortar cake I made for DS's christening - it involved plain flour and baking powder but I forgot to add the baking powder - and as it was a marble cake, I couldn't add it once it was in the tin without destroying the marbling! Very dense indeed but surprisingly nice, nonetheless.

Was going to make the pecan pie yesterday but didn't have enough butter in the house for the pastry crust so have to do it this morning now.

I have read this entire thread, and now I am desperate for Pecan Pie, or Baklava, or Cake of any description.

OldMacEIEIO · 19/05/2010 09:44

to get back on topic for a mo.
I am possibly a bit unique in having been at both ends of the spectrum here.
I was a single parent, struggled and fought hard, even stealing food at one point. Now I have a mega income , no mortgage and no worries.
I was never smug when I was skint. just proud. proud as heck and fought like a wild cat.
Am I smug now ? as smug as a smug queen living in the smug palace in smug city.

to the op. Poverty - i wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy

thumbwitch · 19/05/2010 12:08

can I just go off topic again for a mo - made the pecan pie today and it is bloody gawjus! I used Golden Syrup instead of the Kalo stuff (was lucky to find Golden Syrup in Australia!) and still extremely very nice.

EdgarAllenPoll · 19/05/2010 20:55

HMM PIE<

and you can pretend its good for you, because it contains nuts.

not going to finish my cake fully until friday night though...I've iced it and it's going to be a motorcaravan on a nice green field....currently looks like a 10" Pustule though - the food colouring is a bit vibrant.

poshsinglemum · 19/05/2010 21:40

Op- you have to be a wind up. And if you are not then you are indeed headless and clueless!

Itsour money and we spend it on what we like. I actually like being frugal and I'm rolling in it

j0807bump · 19/05/2010 21:47

skint.

thank god for credit cards and ebay.

on behalf of any single parents that im sure you've offended
