to be annoyed at the smugness of people living on a shoetsring

i probably am.
mumsnet is full at the moment of people going on about how little money we have and how wonderful we are. or at least it seems that way to me.
what so superior about that? and even more so if you are a single parent? unless you are a widow, you made a choice to be a single parent, knowing full well that meant less money. yes, i know that in some cases of domestic violence, its not really a choice, but, it seems that in most cases i have seen on mn, its simply a case of, 'not being happy' with the partner.
whatever, if it makes you happier, fine, but stop harping on about how skint you might be, and how other people have too much money.

rant over.

OP posts:
maristella · 16/05/2010 18:44

pickledmonkey i very rarely post on aibu (maristella lurkalot ) but i am damned if i am going to sit back and allow single parents to be drawn into the firing line yet again in this way. as a single parent i have felt so vulnerable: physically, emotionally and financially. we do a tough job, and i will not sit back and be slagged for being in this position.

maristella · 16/05/2010 18:44

and now i really want baklava

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 18:45

I make my own pecan pie here because I haven't found a British one yet that is half-way edible. I gave up years ago.

I reckon it probably costs more than £6.45 to make at home, but I don't give a toss because I love pecans, especially when they are in a sticky, gooey pie.

Yum.

Ditto key lime pie, Boston cream and banana cream.

Oh, and this other one I make with crushed Oreos.

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 18:49

Oooh, get you with your crushed Oreos, - some of us here are lucky to be able to afford broken bourbons from the pound shop!

saultanpepper · 16/05/2010 18:51

@pickledmonkey

with respect, WTF did the OP expect posting on Mumsnet 'you made a choice to be a single parent' ??? Some people do indeed make that choice - but very few. It was - at best - an ill-considered remark that understandably pissed off a whole bunch of people.

If you're not going to like the answer, don't ask the question. At least not one as crass and thoughtless as the OP's.

Now can someone PLEASE pass me a brownie, or some trifle, or a slice of fruit cake? Preferably with a large glass of merlot. In fact, sod the cake, just give me the wine...

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 18:52

why do you seek to deny other people posting their experiences?

you are on an almighty whine about
single parents
how other folk live
and life in general

whats the beef about single parents.you cant reduce them all to feckless folk who chose their situation

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 18:52

that crushed Oreo one is very special. it's like my Mississippi mud pie, only on very specially Mummy occassions.

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 18:54

i make great tablet, and take into work.results in us all having sugar induced hallucinations

xstitch · 16/05/2010 18:57

I'm hungry now and only just finished dinner.

LoveBeingAHungParliament · 16/05/2010 18:58

I know what you mean op, I fed up with twats moaning about what other people are posting. Get a grip op and look for the hide button!

AnyFucker · 16/05/2010 18:59

expat, one day I am coming round to yours for tea

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:00

do you need a candy thermometer to make tablet?

it's one of those things i've never tried.

i've made chocolate bark and fudge (only with marshmallow fluff/cream, though, which costs a bomb here), but not actual sweets like this.

Morloth · 16/05/2010 19:00

expat it cost 10ish for the ingredients but I got a whole pie and not just a slice. It also mean I could have a maple cinnamon version.

ApocalypseCheese · 16/05/2010 19:00

Oh for gods sake headlessandclueless, do you practice being so stupid or does it come naturally to you ??

Oh yeah, parents really choose to have to say no all the time and struggle to afford the basics, it's fashionable innit ?

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:01

pecan pie.yum the best is from pancho villas since i cant make it unfortunately

jellyjelly · 16/05/2010 19:02

You really are headless and clueless arent you. You need to get your facts correct before you start slaggin off the majority or a lot of people on here.

Yoou need to crawl back from where you came from and pray hard that this never happens to you.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:03

I was thinking that, Morloth, because I use Karo corn syrup in mine, which I have to get from an import shop in Glasgow. Then the pecans, I usually get those in Julian Graves but they don't come cheap.

I usually only make pecan pie at Thanksgiving, because I don't really care for pumpkin pie.

It's just soooo yummy.

I grew up in a pie family because my mother isn't much of a baker. She loves to make pie, though.

MollieO · 16/05/2010 19:03

I managed to get to the age of nearly 40 before becoming a single parent. Nothing, despite my great age, could have prepared me for my (now) ex saying he thought it would be better if ds died (ds was in an incubator in NICU at the time). Strangely I didn't find it hard to know what choice I had to make .

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:04

aye do use a sugar thermometer for tablet.i make it occasionally as i love it too much.but test is being able to roll the wee ball in your fingers.sticky, pliable

elliemental · 16/05/2010 19:06

ojk, i'm guilty of monaing about not haviung much money. I don't mean it to be competitive poverty though, FFS, it is usually on a thread about how crap it is being skint
I am no single parent, or a skiver, or a chancer, or a shirker or any other insult you may wish to think up. We are hard-working, but were very unlucky last year.
The only smugness I feel is that we survived a fucking grim year and are now building ourselves up slowly.
OP, you were right bout one tiny thing ''mumsnet is full''
So do us a favour and piss off to headupownarseandlackingempathy.com

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:06

mollie jesus wept what compels an adult to say something so cruel.best shot of him id say.is your child ok now?and you?

expatinscotland · 16/05/2010 19:07

Hmm, I might give it a try. Would make good pressies for the teachers and staff (yes, I've already started thinking of how to organise those, as end of term is end of June and us shoestringers have to plan . Actually, it's also because my mother's birthday, FIL's birthday, BIL's birthday and DD1's birthday all fall within three weeks of each other in May/June).

scottishmummy · 16/05/2010 19:10

once you have tablet knack it a skoosh.pricey wee chi-chi delis sell it for a fortune all bowed and bagged.i feel outraged at the price of it considering it cost nowt to make

ninah · 16/05/2010 19:11

oh not the tories have been in less than a week and it's single parent bashing time
fwiw my e threw furniture at me when I was pregant with dd for forgetting to buy enough milk for his final post pub cuppa
so yeah, it was a choice I guess
and I do feel good about bringing up two dc on what I was paid as a young graduate
not superior how the feck could I feel superior on a minimum wage
but good

muggglewump · 16/05/2010 19:13

Oi Expat
I have this for making tablet. I don;t even like it that much, but make it for the same reasons you are talking about.
Tis not the best thermometer I;m sure, but it works.
