to be annoyed that the house across the road has a bloody big England flag flapping around outside?

Huge thing, it is. Hung from two of the upstairs windows. I HATE that. It makes the whole street look horrid. I know that might make me sound like a knob, but it just looks so tacky. My DB has just nipped over, and when I told him I hated the look of it, he laughed and said I was being a snob. Am I?

It is DIRECTLY opposite my front window, every time I look out, it is there, looming!

nothing chavy about these

can't see these replacing the flags though

Sorry, but this IS England, so why would you find the flag obnoxious??? You would not find this sentiment in any other nation on earth. Everyone else is proud of their flag, so why aren't we? Why let the chavs claim it for football only? It belongs to all of us and we should be proud.
We live in a lovely area but one family always has their flag up for matches and when I find myself thinking rather snobbishly, "How chavvy!" I reprimand myself in the next breath and remind myself that this is England and people can wave their flags all they want - who am I, stuck up cow - to complain?
I'm talking to us both here...and really think we should abandon our personal conflict on this one.

Hahaha - all you flag objectors make me laugh - loosen up and enjoy the atmosphere, one of my neighbours is Scottish and he's decorated his house with England flags - get into the spirit of it all and don't be so miserable!!!

RunawayWife · 12/06/2010 15:37

Yes you are being a idiot snob.
Get over yourself

If you're English and live in England then why on earth not?! The best way to re-claim the St. George's Cross from BNP bigots is for 'normal', decent people to fly it too, in as large a number as possible.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating your national identity, especially during a World Cup. It's only when it becomes xenophobic, and anti-foreigner, rather than pro-your own country that it becomes a bad thing.

But there's nothing instrinically xenophobic (or racist) about the English flag. That's just a perception that the likes of the BNP have been allowed to create. And the best way to reverse that is for the likes of the OP to take it back from them.

Oh dear, DH has his out, we live in Scotland, was trying to persuade him to hang out Latvian one at the same time to confuse any rampant nationalists.

Still we live in a very middle class neighbourhood, so hopefully people will restrain themselves to urinating in our garden rather than breaking the windows.

Scuffles off nervously as unusual nationality pairing may give away vital info about actual identity....

rookiemater · 12/06/2010 15:44

Of course I mean when DH has his out I am of course talking about his flag, actually this is just making it worse
