to be annoyed that the house across the road has a bloody big England flag flapping around outside?

Huge thing, it is. Hung from two of the upstairs windows. I HATE that. It makes the whole street look horrid. I know that might make me sound like a knob, but it just looks so tacky. My DB has just nipped over, and when I told him I hated the look of it, he laughed and said I was being a snob. Am I?

It is DIRECTLY opposite my front window, every time I look out, it is there, looming!

It's chavvy. They're never hung tastefully, they're just clamped into upstairs bedroom windows and left. I would do cat's bum mouth at this and if that makes me a snob then c'est la vie.

flirty30 · 05/05/2010 19:37

On my street there are four of us who fly our flag! They tend to go up just before St Georges day and this year they are staying up for the world cup- its funny because our flags have got the neighbours all chatting and now we have a real sense of community!!! This year we have England flag bunting outside our house!!!!
You really wouldn't like to be my neighbour!!! x

sallyJayGorce · 05/05/2010 19:42

Two world cups ago I lived in Whitechapel. We were often in the pub before work to catch the early morning games and, because of the population of Whitechapel, most of the people in there were Muslim with a mix of other white and black. Loads of people arrived wrapped in St George's cross flags and a couple of girls were using them as head scarves. Would love know what the BNP would have made of that. I thought it was great. Reclaim the flag? Yes definitely. The racists have hijacked it for too long.

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 19:43

I don't mind it quite so much for the days that England are playing in the footy/rugger etc but leaving them flapping for more than one day is a bit, well, common.

usualsuspect · 05/05/2010 19:43

I'm gonna hang one up now just to piss the snobs off

just imagine the uses for a cannon...the kids would love it on birthdays, firing their age in salvos...with the added fun of having the potential to destroy stuff!

much better than any hapless childrens entertainer!

and, when the French invade...you'll be ready....

This is such a funny thread! Thankyou Sleepy Caz for starting it!

I would like to think of my bunting as chavesque!!!!!

SoupDragon · 05/05/2010 20:00

Having anything hanging out of your window is scruffy. If you want to display it in a patriotic way, show it some respect and hang it properly.

I'm not a snob at all.

LaBellaSantaCatarinadiSienna · 05/05/2010 20:08

Not a joke, though the law was apparently repealed in 2007.. www.communities.gov.uk/news/corporate/actionaxe so I do sit corrected

CheerfulYank · 05/05/2010 20:09

I was just thinking about this b/c we have a flagpole (was here when we moved in) and I really ought to fly something from it.

My friends were utterly horrified when I mentioned getting an American flag though...one actually said "People will think you're a Republican," in a voice that suggested "People will think you eat puppies." Not a Republican, thank you, but I do like America and think the flag is pretty in its way. P'haps I should get a Union Jack and hang that to swear allegiance to Mumsnet?

usualsuspect · 05/05/2010 20:23

..and I'm not a chav

porcamiseria · 05/05/2010 20:25

its rather sad that English Flag = Chav

actually its unfair, other flags aren't chavvy, so why is mine? A French/Ita;lian one would add a certain je ne sais quoi
lets reclaim our flag I say

NonnoMum · 05/05/2010 20:29

Not unreasonable - but a bit snobby. But what's wrong with that I say?????!!!!

Does the flag-bearer have a shaved head and a beer belly?

Might be time to move, dahling...

cory · 05/05/2010 20:34

I wish people who displayed them would have some sort of legend underneath saying This Is Football Not The BNP. Then I would be perfectly happy and not worry about chavvy at all.

In Sweden, flags are displayed all the time; lots of ordinary houses have a flagpole in the garden. It doesn't have Neo-Nazi connotations there. I particularly remember the day after the Tsunami: all the flags in the village were at halfmast and then we found out the reason... My db immediately went out to get his flag up and then lower it to halfmast.

CheeryCherry · 05/05/2010 20:38

Ingerrrrlandddd, Ingerrrrlandddd, Ingerrrrlandddd......etc....BRING IT ON!!!

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 20:57

I don't have a flag. Never thought of it TBH.

I am getting one now though. And flying it out of my bedroom window.

Heifer · 05/05/2010 21:03

I think hanging (not flying) the Engerland flag equats to hanging coloured christmas lights outside your house at Christmas....

Snob? you bet

bruffin · 05/05/2010 21:17

Over the road has one as well, doesn't bother me.

Vallhala · 05/05/2010 21:18

Yep, snob.

There's a USA flag outside my house atm (landlord, who lived here himself prior to me renting the house) is a big Springsteen fan. God knows what the neighbours thought of it, this is a very well-to-do, very English little village! It'll have to go.

And be replaced with something far more fitting by this English football fan.

It's cominghome, it's coming home, football's coming home....

UnquietDad · 05/05/2010 21:22

Tanee58 - it's my neighbour. You'd have to put up with that every morning. (Well, that and DW saying "Didn't you marry me first?")

(Only joking. About the neighbour. Ours is a BNP supporter - their collection of flags is far bigger. (Only joking. Again.))

pigletmania · 05/05/2010 21:28

Yabvvvvvvvu, his house, his freedom to do what he pleases (within reason of coure)If it was a Nazi flag I would totally agree with you

follygirl · 05/05/2010 21:31

I will be proudly showing my Dutch flag when the World Cup starts!

Hup hup Holland!!!

Only hope that Holland doesn't play England as it could get stressful when we beat you. Dh will be really grumpy.

ifancyashandy · 05/05/2010 21:32

But I hate the fact it's been commandeered (sp) by football too. The reason it works in Scandinavia is because it's not about football or neo-nazism. I hate both of these things, so wouldn't fly St George or Union flags precisely because of the negative image given by both these groups.
