to be annoyed that the house across the road has a bloody big England flag flapping around outside?

Huge thing, it is. Hung from two of the upstairs windows. I HATE that. It makes the whole street look horrid. I know that might make me sound like a knob, but it just looks so tacky. My DB has just nipped over, and when I told him I hated the look of it, he laughed and said I was being a snob. Am I?

It is DIRECTLY opposite my front window, every time I look out, it is there, looming!

I don't mind it the way I once would have. I do think it has been reclaimed and is losing that BNP etc connotation. It does look a bit chavvy but it is the World Cup, so you're forgiven!!!

nighbynight · 05/05/2010 21:52

Hmm, if I lived in your street I would be tempted to get a huge England flag just to wind you up.

usualsuspect · 05/05/2010 22:05

I might surround my flag with red white and blue fairy lights

ifancyashandy · 05/05/2010 22:06

Go ahead Nighby - I'd just look down my nose at you !

nighbynight · 05/05/2010 22:16

But then you see Id be looking down my nose at you, for being so suburban.

lol at the fairy lights. It would add a nice touch, wouldnt it.

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 22:16

I'm going to do it too. And I am too tall for anyone to look down on me

weegiemum · 05/05/2010 22:17

It would BU in my street.

I live in Glasgow, though!

thinker · 06/05/2010 05:34

Being English it makes me sad that our flag now represents racists and football chavs. It makes me proud to see an England flag sailing because I am English and I adore my country

ifancyashandy · 06/05/2010 07:53

Suburban Nighby? No, not so much - I don't live in town / city or communter belt.

And I'm 5'9 so fairly tall (and I always wear heels).

Afraid a flag flapping about from a window equals chavvy chav chav...

hippipotamiHasLost92lbs · 06/05/2010 08:02

folly me too!! But it is a smallish flag on a flagpole

Hup hup Holland!

OrmRenewed · 06/05/2010 08:03

OK that will make me a chav then

I've never been one of those before...

mayorquimby · 06/05/2010 10:27

Don't worry it will be down after the Quarter finals

NonnoMum · 06/05/2010 11:53

Doing the school run today I noticed both a St George's flag, and the Union Flag flying from neatly erected flagpoles in the front drive of large detached houses.
How lovely, thought I, to see them gently billowing in the wind, and not flapping outside an upstairs window, accompanied by greying net curtains.

Oblomov · 06/05/2010 12:06

Snob, OP.
And foureleven is a right miser, isn't she. CHAV yourself.

pagwatch · 06/05/2010 12:09

I am now def going to put a flag out of one of my windows.
I will sit there and enjoy people passing and muttering 'chavvy' up at the house.
Then I will shoot them with my new cannon

Oblomov · 06/05/2010 12:30

We're England. All stand up. We're England. It's our World cup.

Knit, one pearl one, drop one curl one.

Me, me mum,me dad and me gran, we're off to waterloo, me, me mum , me dad and me gran, with a bucket of vindaloo.

Oh I love it all. Really I do.

Is this the right time to admit that DH bought a pair of CK undercrackers with a St George's flag on them.

Perhaps I could hang them out of the window?

They came from the CK outlet shop in Clark's village. I told him for being tacky but mostly because they were a tenner

CheerfulYank · 06/05/2010 15:59

I will now always picture Pag as the Admiral from the Mary Poppins movie, with her cannon and whatnot. Come about, Admiral Pag!

Ohh, perhaps I will make some bunting formed entirely of american flag-printed pants and hang it out my window! Ta-ra!

EdgarAllenPoll · 06/05/2010 17:34

one thing's certain, no random person is going to park on her drive with a bloody big cannon sat on it!

imagines pag, with cocked hat rakishly placed on head, bottle of rum in one hand and the other holding herself astride said cannnon, bellowing 'Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

pagwatch · 06/05/2010 17:48

This is all starting to sound like a really good idea....

EdgarAllenPoll · 06/05/2010 20:15

I searched for some MN-appropriate bunting (using red , blue and white in 'fun' & 'hotchpotch' patterns....) and the best i came up with was from

the great little trading co

Boden & White company don't seem to do it. Cath Kidston seemed too floral.
